Characterization of new natural cellulosic fibre extracted from the barks of Trianthema Portulacastrum.

The growing demand for sustainable materials has driven research into natural fibres as eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic counterparts. This study explores the potential of Trianthema portulacastrum fibre, an underutilised natural resource, for sustainable material applications by characterising its chemical, structural, thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties. The fibres were meticulously characterised to evaluate these properties. Chemical analysis revealed cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, wax, and moisture as the principal components. Longer wavelengths in sunlight pass through the human body and have a systemic impact which improves vision.

Long wavelength red light that can extend beyond the human visual range penetrates deeply through biological tissue. Exposure to these longer wavelengths improves mitochondrial function and ATP production. This can translate to improved physiological performance, particularly in the CNS, including the visual system. Light driven metabolic improvements to regional exposure can impact systemically. Here we show that infrared wavelengths from sunlight can be measured after they pass through the human thorax. We then select a prominent transmitted solar wavelength range (830-860 nm) and deliver th

Balanced multi-modality knowledge mining for RGB-infrared object detection.

RGB-Infrared object detection aims to fuse the complementary information of two modalities to improve the accuracy and robustness of the detector. Given the advantages of transformer in modeling long-range dependencies, transformer-based cross-modality fusion methods have been continuously proposed and achieved satisfactory results. However, existing methods face two major challenges: 1) it is difficult to balance the mining of intra-modality specific knowledge and inter-modality complementary knowledge; 2) a single attention layer only models the relationship between token features of the sam

Achieving Near-Infrared Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence for High-Resolution Immune Response Monitoring and Bioimaging.

Organic near-infrared (NIR) room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials hold great potential for bioimaging due to their ability to eliminate background noise and tissue autofluorescence. Here, we synthesized octa-ring fused RTP molecules (TPP-BN and TPP-BF) with B─N coordination bonds via a two-step reaction, enabling NIR phosphorescent emission at 819 nm and a 28.6 ms lifetime. Using PMMA-b-PEG as host and surfactant to stabilize the RTP molecules, we fabricated PMMA-b-PEG based nanoparticles (PNPs) with five-fold brighter afterglow than conventional F127-based methods (FNPs). We further

Rationally designed NIR-in/out fluorophore scaffold for a high-fidelity probe enabling deep-tissue H2S imaging.

BACKGROUND: Real-time, in situ deep-tissue bioimaging of living subjects imposes an ideal yet stringent requirement on fluorescent probes: their excitation and emission wavelengths should both reside within the "biological optical window" to minimize tissue absorption and scattering, thereby achieving a "near-infrared-in/near-infrared-out" (NIR-in/out) profile. For the most widely used single-photon microscopy, however, this ideal strategy has long been hampered by the "excitation wavelength bottleneck": most NIR probes still require visible-light excitation, severely limiting penetration dept

Broadband and High Efficiency Near-Infrared Emission in Cr3+-Doped ZnWO4 Phosphors for Spectroscopic Applications.

The increasing demand for near-infrared phosphor-converted LEDs (NIR pc-LEDs) has spurred extensive research on broadband NIR phosphors. A series of Cr3+-doped ZnWO4 phosphors exhibiting broadband NIR emission was synthesized via a high-temperature solid-phase method. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation (PLE) spectrum of ZnWO4: Cr3+ exhibits two absorption bands in the 200-400 nm and 400-600 nm ranges, which match well with near-ultraviolet and blue LED chips. Under excitation, the PL spectrum shows a broad NIR emission extending from 700 to 1400 nm, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM)

Engineering infrared light detection in blind human retina using ultrasensitive human TRPV1 channels.

Engineering infrared light sensitivity in the blind human retina could restore visual function in patients with regional retinal degeneration. However, current approaches are complex and contain non-human biological components. Using rational protein design, we engineered human transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (hTRPV1) channels (Δ786-840) with temperature sensitivity that shifted from 45 to 41°C, which enabled near-infrared (NIR) light-induced heat activation of mammalian cells at close to physiological temperatures. When expressed in ganglion cells of human retinal explants, Δ786-840

Multimodal Shortwave Infrared Imaging for Visualization of Injection Laryngoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Injection laryngoplasty relies on accurate placement of filler, which can be difficult to visualize in the visible light spectrum (400-700 nm). Shortwave infrared (SWIR, 1000-2000 nm) wavelengths offer advantages due to increased penetration depth and reduced scattering. The study aims to perform a multispectral characterization of the larynx in the SWIR and to provide accurate visualization of injection laryngoplasty via SWIR imaging techniques. STUDY DESIGN: Basic science. SETTING: Laboratory. METHODS: Larynges were prepared from fresh porcine samples and preserved human cadave

Red to near-infrared carbon dots: synthesis, cellular interactions, drug loading, and therapeutic applications.

The emergence of nanoparticles (NPs) has profoundly revolutionized targeted drug delivery systems, overcoming numerous limitations associated with conventional therapies. Red to near-infrared (NIR) emissive carbon dots (RNCDs) have emerged as promising theranostic candidates owing to their unique combination of superior photophysical properties, including high quantum yield (QY) and photostability, and excellent biocompatibility. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the synthesis methods of RNCDs, with a particular focus on the bottom-up approach. We explore how variations in pr

Highly Stable and Bright NIR-II AIE Dots for Fluorescence Imaging-Guided Photothermal Ablation of Endometriosis.

Endometriosis (EM) is a non-cancerous disease that exhibits certain tumor-like properties. While hormonal therapies and surgical excision are standard treatments with proven efficacy in alleviating EM symptoms, they are often accompanied by side effects and a high risk of recurrence after surgery. Therefore, there is an urgent need for non-invasive imaging and therapeutic strategies to address this condition effectively. In this study, second-window near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) fluorescence imaging is employed, which offers superior spatial resolution, deeper tissue penetration, reduce

Programmable adhesion and morphing of protein hydrogels for underwater robots.

Soft robots capable of efficiently implementing tasks in fluid-immersed environments hold great promise for diverse applications. However, it remains challenging to achieve robotization that relies on dynamic underwater adhesion and morphing capability. Here we propose the construction of such robots with designer protein materials. Firstly, a resilin-like protein is complexed with polyoxometalate anions to form hydrogels that can rapidly switch between soft adhesive and stiff non-adhesive states in aqueous environments in response to small temperature variation. To realize remote control over

Chronic Pain and Joint Hypermobility: A Brief Diagnostic Review for Clinicians and the Potential Application of Infrared Thermography in Screening Hypermobile Inflamed Joints.

Joint hypermobility syndromes, particularly chronic pain associated with this condition, including Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), present diagnostic challenges due to their multifactorial origins and remain poorly understood from biomechanical and genomic-molecular perspectives. Recent diagnostic guidelines have differentiated hEDS, HSD, and benign joint hypermobility, providing a more objective diagnostic framework. However, incorrect diagnoses and underdiagnoses persist, leading to prolonged journeys for affected individuals. Musculoskel

A 2D-Lidar-Equipped Unmanned Robot-Based Approach for Indoor Human Activity Detection.

Monitoring the activities of elderly people living alone is of great importance since it allows for the detection of when hazardous events such as falling occur. In this context, the use of 2D light detection and ranging (LIDAR) has been explored, among others, as a way to identify such events. Typically, a 2D LIDAR is placed near the ground and collects measurements continuously, and a computational device classifies these measurements. However, in a realistic environment with home furniture, it is hard for such a device to operate as it requires a direct line of sight (LOS) with its target.

Cadmium phosphates with two types of fundamental building units and a wide ultraviolet transparency window.

Owing to diverse crystal structures and intriguing properties, metal phosphates have attracted much attention in recent studies. In this work, two cadmium phosphates, KCd6P7O24 and KCd3P3O11, were obtained by the high-temperature solution method. In the crystal structure, both the title compounds contain two types of P-O fundamental building units. Thermal and spectral analyses were carried out on the title compounds, indicating that both of them have good thermal stability and short UV cut-off edges. In addition, the relationship between the electronic structures and optical properties was st

Observation of Cation Chromophore Photoisomerization of a Fluorescent Protein Using Millisecond Synchrotron Serial Crystallography and Infrared Vibrational and Visible Spectroscopy.

The chromophores of reversibly switchable fluorescent proteins (rsFPs) undergo photoisomerization of both the trans and cis forms. Concurrent with cis/trans photoisomerisation, rsFPs typically become protonated on the phenolic oxygen resulting in a blue shift of the absorption. A synthetic rsFP referred to as rsEospa, derived from EosFP family, displays the same spectroscopic behavior as the GFP-like rsFP Dronpa at pH 8.4 and involves the photoconversion between nonfluorescent neutral and fluorescent anionic chromophore states. Millisecond time-resolved synchrotron serial crystallography of rs

Photocatalytic degradation of cefixime in aqueous solutions using functionalized SWCNT/ZnO/Fe3O4 under UV-A irradiation.

In this study, SWCNT/ZnO/Fe3O4 heterojunction composite was prepared for enhancing the degradation of β-lactam drugs such as cefixime (CFX) from an aqueous solution. The effects of several factors such as pH, initial concentration of CFX, and photocatalyst dose were investigated. Among them, pH was the most effective parameter for the degradation of CFX. Pareto graph revealed that the degradation process was accelerated at acidic conditions. The surface morphology test such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to enlighten the surface of the functionalized SWCNT/ZnO/Fe3O4 photocat

A CH-Controlled Colorimetric Probe Based on Anthracene Carboximide for Near-Infrared Cyanide Detection.

A chemical sensor that can induce near-infrared red-shifted response represents a promising strategy for the design and development of anion probes. In this work, novel CH-controlled colorimetric probe 3 based on anthracene carboximide was developed for near-infrared detection of cyanide. Probe 3 consisted of CHCN binding site to anthracene carboximide fluorophore, and showed a significant visual change from yellow-green (535 nm) to deep violet (825 nm) with a larger redshift (≈ 290 nm) and fluorescence quenching at 480 nm and 520 nm upon interacting with cyanide. Job curves determined 1:1 bin
