Evaluation of insecticide smears for the control of screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana, in Papua New Guinea.

Three new insecticide smear preparations for the control of Chrysomya bezziana larvae infesting wounds of cattle have been tested under field and laboratory conditions and compared with an established preparation EQ 335 which is based on 3% lindane. Two preparations based on 3% coumaphos proved comparable to EQ 335 in the field trials and exhibited more prolonged residual effectiveness in laboratory tests. A smear preparation based on 2.5% methoxychlor was only effective in controlling 1 and 2 day-old larvae in wounds and was generally inferior to other smears tested in the laboratory.

The effect of MicroRNAs on the insecticide resistance mechanism in populations of the pistachio psyllid Agonoscena pistaciae, a pest of pistachios.

The pistachio psyllid, Agonoscena pistaciae Burckhardt and Lauterer (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), is a major pest of pistachio orchards in Türkiye, particularly in regions with intensive pistachio cultivation. Despite repeated pesticide applications, psyllid population density and the associated damage continue to persist in many orchards. This situation suggests the possible development of resistance to commonly used pesticides. In this study, resistance to the most widely used pesticide active ingredient in the region, spirotetramat, was investigated at both phenotypic and molecular levels. Psylli

Assessing the impact of carbamate insecticide aminocarb on human plasma protein through biophysical and computational methods.

Aminocarb (AMC), a highly toxic carbamate insecticide, is widely used in India, leading to significant human exposure and subsequent toxicity. Its structural features enable binding to multiple receptors with varying affinities, thereby influencing the bioavailability of other substances through crucial binding interactions. The impact of AMC on Human Serum Albumin (HSA) was investigated using various spectroscopic and molecular modeling techniques to assess its binding characteristics, conformational flexibility, and structural stability. Fluorescence spectroscopic measurements revealed a sta

Acceptability of insecticide treated nets in an urban setting in a malarious area: Application of theoretical framework of acceptability.

Malaria has long been considered a rural disease. However, rapid urbanization, the expansion of urban malaria vectors, and the subsequent, ongoing surge in malaria cases across sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, underscore the need to address malaria in urban contexts. This study therefore aims to explore the acceptability of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) in an urban setting using the theoretical framework of acceptability. Eight Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), comprising a total of 48 participants, were conducted in the four Kebeles of Batu town, East Shoa, Oromia, Ethiopia. A semi

Impact of distribution campaigns on the use and availability of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets in rural Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Despite ongoing efforts by both Guinean authorities and international stakeholders, malaria remains the leading public health challenge in Guinea, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality, especially among children under five. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of distribution campaigns in increasing ownership and utilisation of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), to improve coverage among this high-risk population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, community-based survey of 34 villages in Guinea (May-August 2025) assessed household LLIN o

Host-mediated insecticide sequestration in target-site-resistant pests impacts parasitoid fitness and evolution.

Insecticide resistance poses a major challenge to global pest management, yet its cascading effects on ecological networks remain poorly understood. Here, we show that target-site-resistant herbivorous insects can accumulate unmetabolized insecticides and inadvertently function as "toxic prey," impairing the fitness of their natural enemies. Using neonicotinoid- and spinosyn-resistant Myzus persicae and genetically modified Drosophila melanogaster, we demonstrate that resistant hosts surviving high-dose insecticide exposure retain substantial poison residues that are transferred to developing …

Assessing the impact of Cry insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis on the midgut of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval).

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry toxins exert their insecticidal activity by targeting the larval midgut epithelium, yet integration of physiological, ultrastructural, and microbiological responses under near-native conditions remains limited. In this study, we investigated the effects of Cry1Ca on Spodoptera littoralis larvae using an integrative approach combining physiological measurements with high-resolution scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Building on previous whole-organism imaging approaches, we analyzed intact larvae without prior dissection, an approach tha

Ailanthone exerts insecticidal activity as a non-orthosteric 20E antagonist by promoting ecdysone receptor degradation.

Ailanthone, a natural quassinoid from Ailanthus altissima, has been reported to exhibit insecticidal activity, yet its molecular mechanism remains elusive. Here, we show that ailanthone acts as a non-orthosteric inhibitor of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) signaling by promoting ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent degradation of the ecdysone receptor (EcR). In both Drosophila melanogaster and Ostrinia furnacalis, ailanthone treatment inhibited insect growth and metamorphosis. Mechanistically, in D. melanogaster, these developmental defects were attributable to disruption of 20E signaling, as evidenced by

Mapping the Insecticide Resistance Landscape of Malaria Vectors in Odisha, India (1993-2024): A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) are a serious threat to public health, globally. Different genera of mosquitoes, acting as disease vectors, transmit diseases such as malaria, filariasis, dengue, chikungunya, Zika fever, and others. Malaria in humans is caused by Plasmodium species transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. Odisha is one of the malaria-endemic states in the country contributing to about 25% of the total (1.5-2.0 million) reported malaria cases and 30% deaths annually. Chemical insecticides and interventions have been effective in controlling vectors, and their continued usa…

LmCYP3136A1: A cysteine-deficient P450 with dual roles in specific insecticide detoxification and olfaction in Locusta migratoria.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) play pivotal roles in diverse insect physiology, including growth, development, xenobiotic detoxification, and olfaction. In the present study, we identified and characterized a novel P450, LmCYP3136A1, from Locusta migratoria, which lacks the conserved cysteine residue critical for canonical P450 activity in its heme-binding motif. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that LmCYP3136A1 clusters within the CYP3 clan. LmCYP3136A1 was predominantly expressed in the gastric caecum and midgut, with moderate expression in the antenna, and its transcript levels peake

Insecticidal efficacy of residual spraying with deltamethrin-clothianidin (Fludora® Fusion) in Papua New Guinea.

BACKGROUND: In Papua New Guinea (PNG), insecticide-treated nets leave considerable gaps in protection from Anopheles mosquito bites and, as a result, malaria cases are increasing. Residual spraying (RS) may be an effective complementary malaria control strategy. To understand the potential impact of RS and guide RS implementation, it is important to quantify the duration of insecticidal efficacy of RS formulations. The materials used to construct houses in rural PNG differ significantly from the African study sites where most such data have been generated. This study investigated determinants

Where did the nets go? Tracing long-lasting insecticidal net migration on Bioko Island.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are commonly distributed through mass distribution campaigns (MDCs). MDCs are often followed by substantial loss of LLINs, affecting coverage. Here, data from an MDC and a malaria indicator survey (MIS) on Bioko Island were used to characterize LLIN mobility. METHODS: Between October 2014 and July 2015, an MDC reached most of the households of the island. All nets distributed were marked with a unique code corresponding to the community where they were distributed. An MIS conducted in August and September 2015 allowed to measure LLIN loss and

Influence of time of day and insecticide treatment on the abundance of Culiseta melanura (Diptera: Culicidae) in resting boxes.

Frequent use of resting boxes by Culiseta melanura (Coquillett) during the day-time may offer the opportunity for use of these artificial resting sites as delivery substrates for insecticides to manage populations of this eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) vector. In field studies at EEEV-endemic foci in southwestern Michigan, abundance in black-painted resting boxes of adult male and female Cs. melanura varied within the 24-h diel cycle, by whether the interiors of the boxes were treated with a microencapsulated formulation of lambda cyhalothrin (Demand CSTM), and from before to after t…

The DMPA secreted by the pitcher of Nepenthes × ventrata demonstrates insecticidal activity against a range of insect pests.

The prolonged use of traditional chemical pesticides has led to the emergence of resistance in pest populations, and the discovery of bioactive compounds with novel insecticidal mechanisms offers a promising strategy to broaden the current repertoire of pest management approaches. Natural compounds derived from plants constitute a vast resource for the development of novel pesticides. As a carnivorous plant, Nepenthes × ventrata is capable of secreting a diverse array of compounds that serve to attract and digest insects. In this study, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by N. × ven
