Association between internet use and primary headache severity among Hungarian university students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that increased digital technology usage could be a factor in the rising occurrence and severity of headache episodes. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine whether the severity of primary headaches (migraine and tension-type headache) is associated with problematic internet use taking many covariates into account. METHODS: We conducted an online cross-sectional survey using a quantitative, descriptive questionnaire, targeting university students enrolled in correspondence courses, aged 18 to 65. The survey included socio-demographic para

Innovative telementoring for addiction management for remote primary care physicians: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: Addiction is a growing public health problem which affects the person, the whole family, and society. The primary care physician (PCP) is often the first point of contact in the health care and can play a significant role in the early detection and intervention. It is well established that early intervention is associated with better outcomes. In the formal medical training, PCPs receive no formal training on drug addiction management. In this pilot study, we developed an innovative telementoring model and looked at feasibility as well as acceptability among remote PCPs on drug addi

Association Among Self-Compassion, Resilience, Positive Mental Health and Risk of Gaming Disorder in 18-30 Year Old Population in China and Thailand: A Cross-Regional Study.

AIM: The existing literature typically reports an association between Gaming Disorder (GD) and psychopathological outcomes. However, evidence linking positive psychological attributes with the risk of GD is rarely explored. The present study aimed to investigate the associations between resilience, positive mental health and self-compassion and the risk of GD in young adults. DESIGN: The study was cross-sectional, collecting data online in four cities across China and one city in Thailand. METHODS: Potential participants were recruited through social media, gaming platforms and tertiary inst

Taking the first step towards better mental health: Reduced daily smartphone use leads to less problematic smartphone use, fear of missing out, depression and dysfunctional emotion regulation.

Problematic smartphone use (PSU), depression and fear have become increasing public mental health issues around the globe. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate behavioral interventions to reduce their occurrence and improve psychotherapeutic diagnostics and treatment. Overall, 194 persons (80.9% women; Mage = 29.33, SDage = 10.44, range: 18-79) from Germany participated in the experimental study. Participants reduced their daily smartphone use time by 60 min over 14 days or continued their use as normal in the control group. Online surveys at six measurement time points (baseline, intermedi

From active users to passive watchers: Profiles of TikTok engagement and mental health predictors.

Prior studies suggest that TikTok users vary in their engagement behaviors, including passive viewing, participatory interaction, and content creation, and exhibit varying levels of problematic-use risk. Yet it remains unclear which combinations of these engagement behaviors correspond to higher versus lower risk, and which psychological vulnerabilities contribute to high-risk patterns. In a two-wave study of 715 Chinese young adults, we applied latent profile analysis (LPA) to problematic TikTok use and the frequency of passive viewing, participatory, and contributory behaviors at Time 2. We

The mediating role of social anxiety in the association between personality traits and Internet addiction and its underlying neural basis.

Social anxiety (SA) is one of the most prevalent mental health problems in young adults. The significance of personality traits on the development of SA and the influence of SA on Internet addiction (IA) were increasingly emphasized. However, no studies yet have simultaneously examined the relationships among SA, personality traits, and IA, especially the role of SA and its underlying neural basis in the association between personality traits and IA. Therefore, this study was designed to address this question using behavioral and resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) measu

Screening for Problematic Internet Use.

Problematic Internet use (PIU) by adolescents is of growing concern among both parents and pediatricians. Early controversies may have contributed to challenges in defining and measuring PIU. A variety of screening tools have evolved, aligned with different constructs of PIU, although a validated screening tool does exist. Current data and American Academy of Pediatrics policy reflect evidence-driven screening for PIU for all youth.

Maladaptive neurovisceral interactions in patients with Internet gaming disorder: A study of heart rate variability and functional neural connectivity using the graph theory approach.

Heart rate variability (HRV) can be used to represent the regulatory adaptive system and is a proxy for neurovisceral integration. Consistent with the view that, like other addictions, Internet gaming disorder (IGD) involves disrupted regulatory function, the present study hypothesized that IGD patients would show (a) decreased HRV, (b) ineffective functional neural connectivity, and (c) differential patterns of association between HRV and functional neural connectivity relative to healthy controls (HCs). The present study included 111 young adults (53 IGD patients and 58 age- and sex-matched

A trans-therapeutic signature of recovery in internet gaming disorder: From shared network reorganization to molecular underpinnings.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A variety of self-regulation interventions have shown efficacy in treating Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), but their shared and unique neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to identify a common, trans-therapeutic neural signature of recovery and to delineate the specific connectivity fingerprints of five different self-regulation interventions for IGD. METHODS: This secondary analysis pooled resting-state fMRI data from 269 individuals with IGD who participated in one of five randomized controlled trials of self-regulation-based interventions: Approac

The association between a stress-is-enhancing mindset and internet gaming disorder was mediated by behavioral disengagement among medical undergraduate students: a multi-center survey in China.

BACKGROUND: The stress-is-enhancing mindset has beneficial effects on physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. However, its association with internet gaming disorder (IGD) had not been investigated. By integrating stress mindset into the cognitive evaluation process of commonly used stress coping theories, this study examined the association between stress mindset and IGD and explored relevant mediation mechanisms via behavioral disengagement. The gender differences in the above associations and mediations were also explored. METHODS: An online, anonymous, cross-sectional survey was

Problematic internet use and mental health among British children and adolescents.

Despite concerns about the effects of internet use, little is known about how problematic internet use impacts on British children and adolescents. By adapting the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ, Demetrovics, Szeredi, & Rózsa, 2008), this study seeks its validation while studying its association with psychopathological and health problems. A sample of 1,814 children and adolescents (aged 10-16 years old) from UK schools completed questionnaires about PIU, behavioural problems, depression, anxiety and health problems. Confirmatory Factor Analysis identified three independent facto

Relations among loneliness, social anxiety, and problematic Internet use.

The model of problematic Internet use advanced and tested in the current study proposes that individuals' psychosocial well-being, along with their beliefs about interpersonal communication (both face-to-face and online) are important cognitive predictors of negative outcomes arising from Internet use. The study examined the extent to which social anxiety explains results previously attributed to loneliness as a predictor of preference for online social interaction and problematic Internet use. The results support the hypothesis that the relationship between loneliness and preference for onlin
