Role of FGF10/FGFR2b Signaling in Mouse Digestive Tract Development, Repair and Regeneration Following Injury.

During embryonic development, the rudimentary digestive tract is initially a tube-like structure. It is composed of epithelial cells surrounded by mesenchymal cells. Reciprocal epithelial-mesenchymal interactions progressively subdivide this primitive tube into distinct functional regions: the tongue, the pharynx, the esophagus, the stomach, the duodenum, the small intestine, the cecum, the large intestine, the colon, and the anus as well as the pancreas and the liver. Fibroblast growth factors (Fgfs) constitute a family of conserved small proteins playing crucial roles during organogenesis, h

Exploratory laparotomy for acute intestinal conditions in children: a review of 10 years of experience with 334 cases.

AIM: The aim of this study was to review 10 years of experience in the management of children with acute intestinal conditions requiring exploratory laparotomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 334 children (244 boys and 90 girls) who underwent laparotomy for acute intestinal conditions between Jan 1, 2000 to Dec 31, 2009. Patients were grouped into two categories: group A (n = 44) included patients who needed laparotomy with terminal ileostomy and group B (n = 290) included patients who needed laparotomy without terminal ileostomy. We excluded neonates and patients wit

Duodenal Intussusception in an Adult With Situs Inversus Totalis.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital abnormality in which there is a mirror image of all thoracic and abdominal organs. Most individuals have no specific health issues. Their unique anatomy can pose challenges when they present to the emergency department with vague symptoms. The condition has been known to be associated with multiple anomalies, including Kartagener syndrome, congenital heart defects, asplenia, gastroschisis, and duodenal atresia, to name a few. However, it is rarely associated with intestinal obstruction. Duodenal intussusception occurs when a portion of the inte

Meconium pseudocyst: a classical and successfully treated case.

Meconium peritonitis with pseudocyst formation is rare and can be lethal. We report a newborn infant with antenatal sonographic diagnosis of bowel dilatation and giant meconium pseudocyst. Postnatal presentation included a palpable abdominal mass and abdominal distention. Abdominal X-ray revealed a huge egg-shell calcified mass containing air-fluid level. Postnatal sonography revealed a cystic mass with air-fluid level and acoustic shadows. Computed tomography showed a giant communicating cyst with egg-shell calcification, which compressed the other intestinal loops to the posterior peritoneal

Total body water content of neonates with obstruction of alimentary tract.

The total body water content was measured by the deuterium oxide dilution method in 55 neonates admitted to hospital for surgical treatment within 90 hours of birth. The mean total body water of the whole group was 77·03 ± 0·62 (SEM)% of the body weight (range 67·4 to 88·6%), or 1·974 ± 0·005 (SEM) litres (range 1·010 to 2·830 litres). Over a range of body weights from 1·160 to 3·851 kg, total body water content expressed as a percentage of body weight decreased by 5% per kg rise in body weight, but when expressed as litres per kg body weight it increased by 737 ml for each rise of 1 kg in bod

Acquired biliary atresia.

Three infants are described in whom acquired biliary atresia developed during the perinatal period. In two cases this was related to a spontaneous perforation of the bile duct, and in the other it probably was related to previous surgery for duodenal and ileal atresias. Clinically, the symptoms in these patients differed from the congenital forms of biliary atresia; two of the infants had dilated intrahepatic ducts on ultrasonography, and all had restriction of disease to the extrahepatic bile ducts and an excellent response to surgery.

Perforation of the colon in neonates.

PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal perforation is a catastrophic condition in neonates, especially in premature neonates. Although perforation is commonly observed in the small intestine during the neonatal period, perforation of the colon is a rare condition. This study analyzed the clinical findings and results of perforation of the colon in neonates. METHODS: Between 1989 and 2004, 8 neonates were treated for spontaneous perforation of the colon at our institute. These patients were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Gestational ages ranged from 36 to 41 weeks. Seven patients weighed above 2500 g,

[Radiologic diagnosis of congenital anomalies of the digestive tract].

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study is to analyze the frequency of the congenital anomalies of the digestive tract in the period of 1993-1998. The patients and methods: Our group included 67 patients (47 males and 20 females; age range 1-12 months) suspected of digestive tract anomalies. First, all of them have been examined by pediatric surgeon. At the first place, we used the most conventional radiological procedures for digestive tract examination. They were followed by US in cases with suspicion on hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and biliary atresia (bile-duct atresia). CT and MR were performed

[Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of abdominal wall defects and stenoses of the intestinal tract].

Today prenatal sonographic diagnosis of abdominal defects and stenoses of the intestine is possible without few exceptions during general screening in the 20th week of gestation. In a retrospective study, 56 malformations in this area were investigated, which had been diagnosed at the University Hospital Freiburg during 1973 and 1985. Besides the criteria of sonographic diagnosis the etiology, incidence, prognostic factors, the course of pregnancy and delivery and the postpartal management are described. The rate of direct sonographic diagnosis in this area has increased from 26% up to 91%. Th

[The small left colon in newborn infants].

We describe 4 patients with a neonatal small left colon. From these cases and from the literature we know that in 40 to 50% the mother has diabetes mellitus. We describe the differential diagnosis with morbus Hirschsprung, meconium plug and the occurrence of a microcolon in atresias and meconium ileus. Three of the four patients were prematures. From the literature we know this abnormality is found mostly in term infants.

Imperforate anus in females: frequency of genital tract involvement, incidence of associated anomalies, and functional outcome.

Of 162 female patients with imperforate anus, 21% had a noncommunicating and 79% a communicating anomaly of the rectum or anus. Associated anatomical abnormalities were found in the lower urinary tract (15%), upper urinary tract (25%), lower genital tract (27%), upper genital tract (35%), and additional organ systems (51%). Death occurred in 26 patients and in 19, this was attributed to the associated abnormalities. Functional outcome was assessed in those patients 13 years of age or older. Bowel function was normal or near normal in 85%, as was urinary and renal function. In 44% of patients e

Evaluation of the fetal abdomen by magnetic resonance imaging. Part 2: abdominal wall defects and tumors.

Although ultrasound is still the gold standard for the assessment of fetal malformations, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has gained great prominence in recent years. In situations in which ultrasound has low sensitivity, such as maternal obesity, abdominal scarring, and oligohydramnios, MRI has proven to be a safe and accurate method. Regarding fetal abdominal wall defects, MRI appears to be widely used in the prognostic assessment of gastroschisis with intestinal atresia or of complications of omphalocele, allowing better perinatal management and parental counseling. In addition, MRI allows…
