Branched-chain 2-oxo acid dehydrogenase activity in human skin fibroblasts against L-leucine, L-valine, L-isoleucine and derived 2-oxo acids was compared in incubations with 1 mmol/l of 1-14C-labelled substrate. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is, with few exceptions, only reported in patients with severe metabolic or immunologic imbalances. Factors which may predispose to the development of mucormycosis are reviewed. These factors include ketoacidosis and immunologic deficiency states due either to the primary disease or to the treatment for other diseases. An appreciation for these predisposing factors is very important in order that aggressive diagnosis and therapy be undertaken without delay.

Experiments were performed to determine whether prostaglandins (PG) play a role in H+ and NH4+ excretion in the urinary bladder of Bufo marinus. Ten paired hemibladders from normal toads were mounted in chambers. One was control and the other hemibladder received PGE2 in the serosal medium (10(-5) M). BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming causes an estimated 81,000-138,000 deaths and more than 400,000 cases of permanent disability each year, disproportionately affecting low-resource regions.
