OBJECTIVES: Global aphasia without hemiparesis (GAWH) is an uncommon stroke syndrome involving receptive and expressive language impairment, without the hemiparesis typically manifested by patients with global aphasia after large left perisylvian lesions. A few cases of GAWH have been reported with conflicting conclusions regarding pathogenesis, lesion localisation, and recovery. The current study was conducted to attempt to clarify these issues.

Performance-oriented children who encounter voice problems benefit from a team approach to intervention. Developmental and psychosocial issues in addition to the acquisition of information and vocal skills must be addressed. This article presents information from a speech-language pathologist's perspective and includes some examples of clinical approaches and strategies. The importance of building motivation to change vocal habits and the need for the child to develop insight and self-evaluation strategies is emphasized.

Children with developmental language disorders pose specific and unique problems for educators. This article addresses the continuing academic vulnerability of these children during the school years. We advance the position that their academic vulnerability results from the lifelong need to acquire language, to learn with language, and to apply language knowledge for academic learning and social development. Issues are addressed that relate to persistence of language deficits and learning in school.

Language impairments were reviewed retrospectively in patients who underwent partial or total corpus callosum section for medically refractory secondary generalized epilepsy. A survey of the health problems of 87 individuals with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita revealed a high proportion (51) with major feeding difficulties in infancy. The interdisciplinary activities between occupational therapists (OTs) and speech language pathologists (SLPs) were studied by conducting a national mail survey. Analysis of data gathered from 344 OTs and 262 SLPs (n = 1250 and n = 1130, respectively), indicated strikingly similar responses.
