A 4-yr. longitudinal study was conducted of the relationship between stressors, coping strategies, and psychopathological symptoms in a group of 447 adolescents. The Coping Responses Inventory-Youth Form and the Youth Self-Report were used to evaluate coping strategies and psychopathological symptoms, respectively. Stressors were identified on the basis of written reports produced by the adolescents and coded using the System of Coding Problems of Adolescents. A multilevel approach showed that scores for externalizing symptoms increased significantly with age. General distress and internalizat

The current study investigated the main and interactive effects of a nonclinical panic attack history and distress tolerance in relation to PTSD symptoms. The sample consisted of 91 adults (62.6% women; M(age)=23.45, SD=9.56) who met DSM-IV criteria for trauma exposure, 53.8% of whom met criteria for a recent (past 2 years) history of nonclinical panic attacks. Results indicated that distress tolerance, as measured by the Distress Tolerance Scale (Simons & Gaher, 2005), was significantly related to all PTSD symptom clusters, and a nonclinical panic attack history was significantly related to P

This article expands on James Pennebaker's original model in expressive writing, going from an Analogically unclear and unspecified experiential mass (A) to a Digital specification in words (D). Amplifications of this model are found in philosophy, psychodynamic theory and in Salience learning theory. Applications of this model involve expressive writing, going from ambiguous experiences (A) to using the Dictionary (D), and responding to Sentences with strong psychological impact (S). The undefined and ill-defined analogical mass is constituted by traumas in Pennebaker's work and hurt feelings

OBJECTIVE: This study addressed predictors of change in posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among youths who had experienced physical injuries. The influences of pretrauma internalizing and externalizing problems, prior stressor exposure, and gender were investigated. Additionally, gender was examined as a moderator of the associations between internalizing problems and PTSS, externalizing problems and PTSS, and prior stressor exposure and PTSS.
METHOD: Participants were 157 children and adolescents (75% male; age M = 13.30 years, SD = 3.60; 44% Caucasian, 39% African American, 13% Hispanic,

OBJECTIVE: Research describing the personal experiences of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is limited, but is important for identifying the patients' need of support. The aim of this study was to describe experiences of falling ill with GBS, with the focus on the onset of disease, the diagnosis and the illness progress during hospital care.
METHODS: The study included 35 persons, 20-78 years old. They were interviewed 2 years after the onset of GBS. The interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis.
RESULTS: The onset was described as either an incomprehensible, prolonged, increa

Relationships between diary-keeping and tendencies toward alexithymia and rumination were studied in 118 Japanese participants. Participants completed a questionnaire that assessed diary-keeping habits (both regular and Web diaries), alexithymia, and rumination. Individuals who wrote about their daily events epically (i.e., focusing on actions and events) in a regular diary considered both identifying and describing their feelings and controlling negative rumination to be less difficult than those who wrote lyrically (i.e., focusing on emotions). Those people who sometimes kept a diary on the

How early-life events "set the stage" for adult disease has emerged as a research focus. Historically, the epidemiology of disease risk factors has centered on adult life, with little scrutiny of early-life events. Here we review the concept that events in early life may contribute to late-life neurodegenerative disease development, with a focus on Parkinson disease (PD) and Alzheimer disease (AD). Suspect events in early life include infections, stress, poor nutrition, and environmental factors such as chemical and pesticide exposure. Adiposity appears to contribute to both PD and AD; and bec

AIM: This paper is a report of a study of the immediate lived experiences of victims and relatives of the 2004 tsunami disaster.
BACKGROUND: Disasters serve to remind us of our frailty and vulnerability and raise existential questions. From the perspective of caring sciences, suffering is regarded as a natural source for change in patients' understanding of the world and the meaningfulness of their lives.
METHOD: A phenomenological hermeneutic study was conducted, using in-depth interviews with a convenience sample of 19 informants in 2006-2007. Ricoeur's theory of interpretation served as a

BACKGROUND: Suicide is now among the five top causes of death in youth worldwide. However, during the preadolescent period, suicidal behaviour is rare and difficult to define because the cognitive level of young children limits their ability to plan and understand the consequences or the finality of suicide. There is virtually no information about preadolescent suicidal behaviour in Nigeria.
OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the presentation and psychosocial issues associated with preadolescent suicidal attempt using the 'hanging' method in Nigeria.
METHODS: Three case scenarios of suicide attempt by

Research has established that a relationship between trauma and substance use disorders (SUDs) exists. The nature of the relationship and its dimensions are not well understood. Nevertheless, it is important to consider either problem when the other is present. Given the spate of traumatic events occurring globally in recent years, it is critical for the planning group for the development of the "For Whom Is It Permitted, for Whom Is It Forbidden" museum exhibit to consider the complex relationship between trauma and SUDs and ways of representing it in the exhibit. This article briefly discuss

BACKGROUND: The current study evaluated the bottoming out hypothesis by determining the extent to which composite measures of motivation to change are associated with baseline characteristics among patients seeking treatment for substance dependence.
METHODS: Two hundred treatment-seeking substance-dependent veterans were assessed. Motivation to change was assessed using the composite measures of Readiness to Change (RTC) and Committed Action (CA) derived from the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment. Baseline characteristics included recent life stressors, addiction severity, depress

INTRODUCTION: The impact of stressful life events in triggering major depressive episodes has been extensively studied since 30 years. The results of these studies however, have been controversial, due to limitations in assessment tools and lack of power.
METHODS: This paper shows the results of the ACTUEL survey, conducted in a sample of 13,377 depressed patients. The aim of this survey is to study the relationship between the number of previous depressive episodes and the life event exposure triggering the current depressive episode.
RESULTS: Increasing number of previous depressive episod

BACKGROUND: In adults there is evidence that the affective-cognitive processes of rumination and overgeneral autobiographical memory retrieval may play a part in maintaining depression. This study investigated the effects of induced rumination as compared to distraction on mood and categoric overgeneral memory in adolescents with first episode Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and the specificity of any effects to MDD.
METHOD: Three subject groups; adolescents with first episode MDD (N = 75), non-depressed psychiatric participants (N = 26) and community controls (N = 33) were recruited. An exp

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated that children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) may respond to traumatic and other life events in a similar way to the general population. However, few studies have charted the extent of exposure to recent life events in samples of adults with ID and the association of such exposure with general psychiatric problems.
METHODS: Adults with ID (n = 1155) in community and residential services in a county district in North-east England were assessed using the Psychiatric Assessment for Adults with Developmental Disabilities Checklist (PAS-AD

Neurofibromatosis is a common genetic condition that causes nerves to develop non-malignant swellings (neurofibromas). These can occur on any area of the body, and can result in a wide range of symptoms involving the neurological, cognitive, orthopaedic, renal and endocrine systems. The severity of the condition is highly variable, and an individual approach is necessary to address the specific symptoms experienced by each patient. Nurses can address many aspects of neurofibromatosis including screening, medical complications, learning difficulties, and the impact of disfigurement. With knowle

The present study examined relationships among stressful events, personality characteristics, and affective status in males and females of various alcohol drinking patterns. We examined a total of 154 participants from three distinct alcohol subgroups: alcohol dependent, problem drinker, and light social drinker. These subjects did not meet criteria for any concurrent nonalcohol comorbid psychiatric disorder. The study included an alcohol quantity-frequency interview and self-report questionnaires on stressful life events, depressive symptoms, trait anxiety, and personality characteristics. Re

This study examined posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive women seeking medical care. Specifically, we examined traumatic life events, psychiatric treatment, social support, and demographic characteristics in relation to level of PTSD symptoms. We recruited and obtained informed consent from 47 ethnically diverse HIV-positive women from two HIV outpatient clinics in a county medical system. Forty-one of these women provided complete data on measures assessing demographics, traumatic life events, PTSD symptoms, social support, and psychotherapy/medi
