BACKGROUND: Ensuring that nurses are prepared for the delivery of palliative care is essential to the provision of high-quality palliative and end-of-life care. Education plays a key role in the preparation but may encompass more than skills competence.
AIM: To understand student nurses' perceptions of their preparation and experiences of delivering palliative and end-of-life care as they complete their BSc Adult Nursing pre-registration programme.
METHODS: Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to explore student nurses' perceptions of delivering palliative and end-of-life care.

BACKGROUND: The hypothesis that patients who primarily progress on two consecutive chemotherapy regimens without evidence of clinical benefit may opt for supportive care was investigated. The purpose was to determine the quality of life in recurrent ovarian cancer patients choosing to receive salvage chemotherapy in addition to supportive care or palliative care alone. A secondary objective was to evaluate factors that affect quality of life in ovarian cancer patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted in patients who had histological confirmed epithelial ovarian cancer

Urological cancers are associated with reduced quality of life and high psychological burden, yet affected patients receive less psychosocial support than other cancer groups. Electronic health literacy (eHL) may facilitate independent access to resources, but its role for psychological outcomes and quality of life in this group is unclear. This study examined associations between eHL, psychological symptoms, and quality of life during transition from inpatient to outpatient care. A prospective, single-centre observational study was conducted. Eligible inpatients (urological cancer, Distress T

OBJECTIVE: To understand the experiences and possible gaps in care, including availability of perinatal palliative care, in patients carrying a pregnancy diagnosed with life-limiting fetal anomalies who sought abortion.
STUDY DESIGN: From April 2020 to May 2021, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews 2-8 weeks after participants had aborted a pregnancy with a life-limiting fetal condition. We recruited English-speaking participants 18 years or older from multiple states with varying legislative support and restrictions towards abortion. Interviews were conducted over the telephone,

BACKGROUND: Despite established guidelines, women with breast cancer often experience complex care pathways. This study explored the lived experiences of treatment and service utilisation pathways for women living with and beyond breast cancer in Australia. We mapped real-world treatment journeys against optimal care pathway guidelines to identify specific gaps and improvement opportunities for healthcare delivery. METHODS: Women at least two years post initial diagnosis participated in semi-structured focus groups organised by cancer typology: non-metastatic, de novo metastatic, recurrent non

Death (with a capital D) can best be understood as a series of distinct but related deaths. For example, a pregnant woman was found to be brain-dead but her vital functions were artificially sustained for nine weeks until her fetus could be delivered, after which the machines were removed and she died a second, conceptually distinct death. This procedure is probably justifiable, but any legislation or policy regarding such cases should be flexible and should require consent.

Interstitial lung disease is a complex radiographic and histologic diagnosis, encompassing more than 200 disorders. Acute exacerbation presents as acute respiratory failure and mimics an upper respiratory viral syndrome. An extensive diagnostic workup is required to rule out other causes of acute respiratory failure and identify potential triggers. Treatment, including general supportive care and immunosuppression, depends on the underlying pathology. Respiratory support with high-flow nasal cannula should be initiated early in an attempt to minimize progression to invasive mechanical ventilat

Our aim was to reach a better insight of the disposition of people living alone with dementia toward the use of care and support services. In biographical narrative interviews, women and men with dementia communicated to us their opinions, needs, and subjectively perceived level of resources regarding their everyday life and care. Both individual and gender-specific differences concerning the use of formal support become evident in their narrations. We offer indications for a future healthcare practice that is specific to dementia. To fully exploit the potential of participatory research, stud

BACKGROUND: The disease burden of malignant brain tumours poses significant challenges to both patients and their family caregivers. Even years post-bereavement, neuro-oncology caregivers can suffer serious and long-lasting adverse outcomes. A previous quantitative survey (reported separately) highlighted significant challenges experienced by bereaved neuro-oncology caregivers. This current work explored these issues further through focus groups.
OBJECTIVE: To identify opportunities to enhance support, we investigated caregiver experiences during the patient's end-of-life phase, the dying pro

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identifies Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) as an urgent threat to people and health care systems. CDI leads to high health care utilizations and results in significantly reduced quality of life for patients. The high burden of disease is seen across all health care settings, outside of the hospital, in the community, and in younger people. Individuals with CDI transition from hospitals to long-term care facilities to the community, and management of these transitions can reduce the incidence of recurrence and rehospitalization

OBJECTIVE: Donation after cardiac death (DCD) or donation of organs after removal of life support is an accepted means of organ retrieval that usually occurs in the setting of sudden illness but has not been described in people with progressive neurologic illness. We report DCD in two people with progressive amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
METHODS: Case series at an academic medical center of two men with progressive ALS who underwent withdrawal of artificial life support, rapid cardiac death, and subsequent organ donation. The primary outcome was donation of organs in concordance with p

Background: In the United States, nearly 1 million older adults reside in assisted living facilities, which aim to provide support for safe, autonomous living. However, low-income residents, especially those in Medicaid-supported facilities, experience unmet medical and social complex care needs and limited serious illness communication due to limited resources. Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the complex care needs and serious illness communication challenges experienced by low-income older adults in Medicaid-supported assisted living. Methods: A qualitative secondary fr

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dementia is currently set to rise to 1.7 million by 2040, with associated costs estimated at £90 billion. Given its substantial impact on quality of life (QoL) and the growing societal and financial burden, identifying efficient approaches to dementia support is a key policy priority. Current policy direction emphasises a shift toward community-based models of care; however, economic evidence is required to determine whether such approaches can improve outcomes while representing cost-effective use of limited healthcare resources. This study presents a cost-effect

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young people living with HIV experience significant challenges, including unmet psychosocial and self-management needs and limited access to adequate HIV information. Peer support strategies that allow individuals to share their personal experiences and life stories have shown promise in improving their engagement in care and addressing the psychological and social challenges of living with HIV. However, current care approaches do not optimize individual life stories as a foundation for delivering patient-centered and individualized care.
METHODS: This study appl

BACKGROUND: Improving support for unpaid carers is a policy priority internationally, yet there are few reliable population estimates on numbers of end of life carers, and little is known about the demographic characteristics of this group.
AIM: (1) Estimate the number of unpaid end of life carers in the UK; (2) Describe demographic characteristics of this group.
DESIGN: An observational study using data from the UK Household Longitudinal Survey (Understanding Society), Health Survey for England and the Office for National Statistics to estimate the number of end of life carers in the UK. Un

BACKGROUND: Persons diagnosed with progressive neurological disease who experience breathing difficulties and impaired cough function, are a vulnerable group. Some are in the late end-of-life stage, and providing the right kind of support is a challenge. There is a need to address the broader experiences of living with a progressive neurological disease including breathing difficulties and impaired cough function. Therefore, the aim was to explore persons' experiences of living with progressive neurological disease and breathing difficulties.
METHODS: We used qualitative content analysis, dra

Existential distress and demoralization are common among patients with advanced cancer and are associated with impaired psychological well-being, reduced quality of life and difficulties in end-of-life adjustment. Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy (MCP), grounded in Viktor Frankl's logotherapy, was developed to address these existential dimensions of suffering. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from randomized and controlled studies evaluating MCP in adults with advanced cancer and discusses its clinical relevance within supportive and palliative care. Across studies, MCP demonstrated co

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a technique involving oxygenation of blood and elimination of carbon dioxide in patients with life-threatening, but potentially reversible conditions. Thanks to the modification of extracorporeal circulation used during cardiac surgeries, this technique can be used in intensive care units. Venovenous ECMO is used as a respiratory support, while venoarterial ECMO as a cardiac and/or respiratory support. ECMO does not cure the heart and/or lungs, but it gives the patient a chance to survive a period when these organs are inefficient. In addition, ext

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Becoming spousal caregivers for persons with young-onset dementia (YOD) is an unexpected event that deviates from the normal life course trajectory, creating unique and profound challenges. Understanding their burden, its primary sources, and their coping resources is essential for developing tailored support.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We employed a mixed-methods approach to comprehensively understand the caregiving burden experienced by 11 community-dwelling spousal caregivers of YOD. We used the Zarit Burden Interview to quantify caregiving burden and conducted
