Incidence of cervical branch injury with "marginal mandibular nerve pseudo-paralysis" in patients undergoing face lift.

The anatomy of the cervical and marginal mandibular branches of the facial nerve is reviewed. In the senior author's practice, "pseudoparalysis of the marginal mandibular nerve" due to cervical branch injury occurred in 34 of 2002 superficial musculoaponeurotic system-platysma face lifts (1.7 percent) and was associated with a full recovery in 100 percent of cases within a time period ranging from 3 weeks to 6 months. Cervical branch injury can be distinguished from marginal mandibular nerve injury by the fact that the patient will be able to evert the lower lip because of a functioning mental

Peripheral radial incisions to treat inferior contact lens edge lift after penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus.

A patient with marked corneal astigmatism and inferior contact edge lift after penetrating keratoplasty for keratoconus had corneal relaxing incisions (CRIs) on the donor button and radial incisions on the host cornea. Results were evaluated by computerized videokeratography and by refitting the contact lens. Two pairs of CRIs decreased astigmatism from 11.00 to 4.25 diopters but did not alleviate the contact lens edge lift, which was caused by excessive steepness in the keratoconic host cornea. After 6 radial incisions were made to flatten the inferior host cornea, the peripheral cornea flatt

Defining and measuring 'Lift' in soft tissue filler-based facial rejuvenation: a critical review and proposed framework.

The term "lift" is among the most frequently used outcomes, technique names, and product descriptors in the soft tissue filler literature, yet it has no consensus operational definition, no agreed measurement standard, and no validated threshold for clinical significance. We undertook a structured narrative critique of how "lift" is operationalised in the peer-reviewed filler literature for hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-l-lactic acid, polycaprolactone, and hybrid products, and compared reported effect sizes against the documented accuracy of the measurement modalities used. Technical aspects of the use of prostatic urethral lift for the management of obstructive median lobe - A step-by-step guide.

This video uses a picture-in-picture demonstration of the procedural hand movements and the endoscopic view to illustrate a reproducible technique for using prostatic urethral lift to treat an obstructive median lobe (OML) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The challenge with this procedure is in safely manipulating the median lobe without injuring it. This technique was utilized for three patients who presented with worsening urinary symptoms despite adequate medical therapy. Postoperative recovery, in this series of patients, was uneventful with significant improvements in the qu

The LIFT UP study: feasibility of systematically identifying and addressing resource needs in those with metastatic breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Social determinants of health (SDOH) and health-related social needs (HRSN) impact cancer outcomes, yet few programs systematically address these needs. We examined the feasibility of routine assessment of SDOH/HRSN within a clinical metastatic breast cancer (MBC) program and subsequent linkage to support services. METHODS: We approached patients with MBC seen at an NCI-designated center from January-October 2023 who were ≤ 6 months from MBC consultation or diagnosis. Enrolled participants were administered a baseline survey of SDOH/HRSN, referred to appropriate services, and surveye

The association between skin-suturing technique, prolonged healing and recurrence after Bascom's Cleft lift surgery.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment for complex Pilonidal Sinus Disease (PSD) is still debated. Despite great advances with the introduction of off-midline closure techniques, healing problems and recurrence remain challenges. We aimed to investigate whether choice of skin-suturing technique in Bascom's Cleft lift (BCL) procedure influenced risk of prolonged healing or recurrence. METHODS: We analysed the data of 540 unique patients who underwent BCL surgery at Randers Regional Hospital between 2016 and 2022. During this period, a technical revision of technique caused a shift from extracutaneo

Femoral elevation variability in direct anterior THA: mechanical assessment of a common table-integrated lift system.

BACKGROUND: The direct anterior (DA) approach for total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly used by surgeons. Although Hana traction tables are commonly used in DA THA, no study has quantified the mechanical performance and uniformity of the femur lift. Characterising femoral lift variability is clinically important for patient safety during femoral exposure. PURPOSE: To assess whether femoral lift velocity differs across increasing loads, femur lift laterality, and table age. METHODS: 7 Mizuho OSI Hana traction tables (14 actuators) were tested using a custom jig and loads between 25 and

A two-stage lateral sinus lift with Alb-PRF gel: enhancing bone regeneration - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary sinus augmentation traditionally uses xenografts, allografts, or autografts. This case report details a novel, entirely autologous technique using albumin-denatured platelet-rich fibrin (Alb-PRF) gel as the sole grafting material in a two-stage lateral sinus lift - an approach rarely documented. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old male with a residual bone height of 4-5 mm (mean: 4.3 mm) underwent a two-stage lateral sinus lift. The sinus cavity was grafted exclusively with Alb-PRF gel, and the lateral window was left uncovered without a barrier membrane. After 6 months,

The Influence of Relative Hamstring Flexibility and Lumbar Extensor Strength on Lumbar and Pelvic Kinematics During a Stoop Lift.

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of relative hamstring flexibility and lumbar extensor strength on lumbar flexion during a stoop lift. Lumbar flexion during stoop lifting has been associated with increased bending stress and load on the lumbar spine. The potential impairments that contribute to a flexed lumbar lifting posture during stoop lifting are unclear. Forty-nine healthy individuals (27 females and 22 males) between the ages of 18 and 40 participated. Strength of the lumbar extensors was measured with a motor-driven dynamometer, and relative hamstring flexibility…

Scaffolds, screens, and readiness: How teacher-guided AI lifts special-education students into conversational agents.

This research examination focuses on the role of teacher AI scaffolding, the supportive guidance teachers give regarding the use of AI tools, on the conversational AI-readiness of students in special education. We administered a research survey to 562 undergraduates (convenient sampling) with disabilities across five Chinese provinces and tested a moderated-mediation model based on Self-determination theory (SDT) using Smart_PLS. Findings show that teacher AI scaffolding exerts a small but significant direct impact on the readiness of students to use academic Chatbots (beta = 0.12, p < .01). T

Osteoclastogenesis-characterized osteoinductive biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic for bone regeneration in rabbit maxillary sinus lift.

Calcium phosphate ceramics can be osteoinductive. Osteoinductive calcium phosphate ceramics are attractive bone substitutes because of their ability to induce bone formation in soft tissues far from osseous sites. Herein, we introduce an osteoinductive biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic for maxillary sinus lift. Compared to protein-deprived bovine bone mineral (DBBM), BCP supported osteoclastogenesis in vitro and in vivo, induced bone formation following intramuscular implantation in FVB/NCrl (FVB) mice, and enhanced bone regeneration in the rabbit maxillary sinus lift. Our findings indi

An in vitro study of glenoid implant peripheral peg interface mechanics during eccentric loading and lift-off.

Glenoid implants used in anatomic total shoulder arthroplasties typically incorporate peripheral pegs as a design feature to support eccentric loads. These peripheral pegs and the implant-cement-bone interface undergo substantial cyclic tensile-compressive loads during normal activity. Therefore, these pegs are of interest in translating the micromechanics of local implant fixation failure to the biomechanics of gross anatomic failure of the glenoid implant after total shoulder arthroplasty. This study used an in vitro peg-cement-bone construct which incorporated bone tissue acquired from oste
