BACKGROUND: Since the diagnosis of post-arthroscopic chondrolysis is very difficult, it can be underdiagnosed and confused with other diseases in clinical practice.
PURPOSE: To propose imaging features of post-arthroscopic radiocarpal chondrolysis (PRCC) and to compare these with osteoarthritis associated with scapholunate dissociation which are the most common misdiagnoses of PRCC.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: To identify missed diagnoses of PRCC, 994 magnetic resonance imaging scans performed in 910 patients were retrospectively reviewed. After the identification of 73 patients who exhibited sign

This study examined the role of arthroscopic debridement alone for complete and incomplete intercarpal ligament tears of the wrist. Forty-three wrists underwent arthroscopic evaluation for persistent wrist pain and were identified as having isolated scapholunate or lunotriquetral ligament tears treated by arthroscopic debridement alone of the torn ligament edges. At follow-up examination at an average of 27 months, 29 (66%) wrists having a complete scapholunate ligament tear and 36 (85%) wrists having a limited scapholunate ligament tear had either complete symptom resolution or improved sympt

The authors report the case of a 23 year old patient, who presented the following combination of injuries after a fall, namely a divergent dislocation of the elbow, a fracture of the radial head, a fracture of the ulna and a perilunate dislocation with scaphoid fracture. The entire injury thus represented a bipolar dislocation of the forearm. The emergency management consisted of a closed reduction of the elbow together with osteosynthesis of the ulna, internal fixation of the scaphoid with a compression screw, and scaphocapitate K wiring. After 26 months, the function of the elbow was satisfa

PURPOSE: To evaluate the success of reduction and association of the scaphoid and lunate with a fibrous union in an effort to evaluate the technique's validity and reproducibility.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 7 patients (8 wrists) with an average follow-up of 38 months. Static and grip radiographs were examined in the preoperative, immediate postoperative, and final follow-up settings to evaluate scapholunate (SL) diastasis, SL angle, hardware position, and complications. At final follow-up, grip strength and wrist range of motion were recorded, and patients completed the

PURPOSE: Perilunate dislocations and transscaphoid perilunate fracture dislocations are associated with a high incidence of posttraumatic arthritis. According to the current literature, at medium-term follow-up, radiological signs of arthritis do not correlate with functional scores. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient hand function and the development of posttraumatic arthritis after perilunate dislocations (11 cases) and transscaphoid perilunate fracture dislocations (7 cases) at a minimum 10 years of follow-up.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed including 18 patients w

Ulnar-sided wrist pain can be attributed to various bony and ligamentous structures. The purpose of this review is to compare outcomes following surgical interventions for isolated lunotriquetral (LT) interosseous ligament injuries in adults. We assessed 202 procedures from 9 retrospective case series studies of low to moderate quality based on the Structured Effectiveness Quality Evaluation Scale. The comparative outcomes (ie, range of motion, pain, strength, quality of life, complications, return to work, and patient satisfaction) were aggregated and categorized under arthrodesis, capsulodes

As the distal radius fracture is one of the most commonly encountered upper limb injuries, the aim of this study was to provide a quick and easy method to aid in the assessment of fractured wrists, both pre- and post-fixation, by utilising the relationship of the radial shaft and the lunate. A retrospective analysis on 100 consecutive patients with normal wrist radiographs was performed. The results demonstrated that the variations of radiolunate anatomy followed a normal distribution. The normal anatomical relationship was then described. A second part to the study consisted of reviewing our

INTRODUCTION: Scapholunate ligament injury may cause carpal instability leading to pain, dysfunction and risk of scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC) if untreated. Chronic dissociation is challenging to manage, with no clear reference standard reconstruction technique. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of scapholunate ligament reconstruction using an extensor carpi radialis brevis autograft and internal brace augmentation.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 12 patients with symptomatic chronic scapholunate (SL) dissociation treated between 2020 and 2024. Clinical outcomes included a

Despite all progress in the treatment of distal radius fractures, malunion is still one of the most common complications. It may be true that not all non-anatomically aligned fractures of the distal radius are causing disabilities. However, most patients with a distal radial malunion complain about loss of wrist motion and forearm rotation, loss of grip strength, and pain. These complaints should lead to a sophisticated clinical examination and a careful evaluation of the radiographs of the wrist, and - if needed - to further investigations. Treatment options are procedures solely aimed to dim

INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the scapholunate (SL) interosseous ligament can have devastating consequences to carpal stability. The purpose of this study is to provide a technique for screw augmentation to SL reconstruction, while comparing radiographic outcomes to a traditional Kirschner wire fixation cohort.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients treated by screw fixation for SL ligament injuries was cross-matched to a cohort of patients treated with pin fixation for age and length of time from the time of injury to surgical fixation. Outcomes were the values of SL gap and SL angle on

PURPOSE: Perilunate injuries are rare, severe injuries of the carpus. They can present as isolated injuries or in the poly-traumatised patient. This is the first documented series of these injuries treated in a Major Trauma Centre. The aims were to assess the management, treatment algorithm and outcomes, of perilunate injuries in our department, review whether concomitant polytrauma affected those outcomes and identify if delay to definitive treatment had a significant effect on overall outcome.
METHODS: Perilunate injuries admitted to the Royal London Hospital between Oct 2011 and March 2016

UNLABELLED: Some variances and anatomical proportions of the wrist may contribute to development of avascular necrosis of the lunate. Kienböck's disease is more often encountered in young males, who suffer, among others, from type II of the lunate (with two joint surfaces for the capitate and hamate) and/or negative variance of ulna in relation to radius. The aim of the study was to investigate whether there exists interdependence between the simultaneous occurrence of individual types of the lunate with one of the variances of ulna in both genders.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analy

Chronic radial wrist pain with no radiographic evidence of scapholunate instability or other wrist disease can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Our purpose was to evaluate the results of an operation to treat chronic radial or periscaphoid wrist pain that has failed to respond to conservative treatment. We examined the scapholunate ligament and performed a dorsal capsulodesis. One hundred-and-two patients were reviewed retrospectively. Casenotes were available for 88 patients. Function, pain, range of movement (ROM), and grip and pinch strengths were evaluated. Twenty (23%) of the patients
