Gardner's syndrome - a case report.

Gardner's syndrome is the association of multiple colonic polyps (familial adenomatous polyposis coli - FAP) with sebaceous cysts and jaw osteomas. The significance of this dominantly inherited condition to the dentist is that the colonic polyps usually undergo malignant change by the fourth decade and the extra-intestinal lesions may be apparent before those in the bowel. As such, early detection of multiple jaw osteomas and/or multiple sebaceous cysts (particularly on the scalp) may lead to appropriate further investigation and treatment which might be life saving. Diagnosis of this conditio

Brown tumour of hyperparathyroidism in the mandible associated with atypical parathyroid adenoma.

The brown tumour of hyperparathyroidism is a localized bone tumour and an uncommon manifestation of hyperparathyroidism. A 27-year-old woman presented with a mandibular 8 x 10 cm solid mass diagnosed as central giant cell granuloma. Chemical blood analysis revealed increased serum calcium levels of 12.46 mg/dL and the parathyroid hormone level was 124 pg/dL. The patient underwent surgery with removal of a parathyroid mass. Histologically, this parathyroid tissue was seen to be limited by a fibrous capsule with morphological features consistent with atypical parathyroid adenoma. The mandibular

Histological evaluation of free revascularized iliac crest bone after transplantation for mandibular reconstruction.

Differing views on the nutritional status of revascularized bone in animal studies and in human transfer have been expressed. Normal viability is reported as well as single cell necrosis and devitalized areas and, finally, necrosis of the complete graft. From 19 patients with revascularized bone transfer into injured recipient tissues, we obtained 32 drill biopsies out of the centre of the graft and near the mandibular stump during the removal of the osteosynthesis plates. The histological preparations were examined for bone viability. In 58% of all patients, there occurred partial necroses in

Primary hyperparathyroidism of the mandible. A case report.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is due to benign or malignant neoplasia of one or more parathyroid glands, causing a wide spread osteoclastic resorption of bone with fibrous tissue replacement. A case of primary hyperparathyroidism involving mandible of a 16 year old Saudi female is being reported. The patient was terated by surgical intervention. This case supports the opinion that negative laboratory tests viz., calcium and phosphorus levels do not exclude the existence of hyperparathyroidism (normocalcaemic type).

Intramural calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor.

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare lesion of the jaws. It accounts for about 1% of all odontogenic tumors. The CEOT occurs primarily in the molar-premolar region of the mandible, and 52% of cases are associated with an unerupted tooth. This report describes an unusual case in a 37-year-old woman. The tumor arose in the molar area of the right mandible, appeared radiographically as a radiolucent lesion, and was thought to be a dentigerous cyst in association with an impacted first molar. The lesion was enucleated. Microscopic examination showed it to be a dental sac, w

Spontaneous regression of anterior open bite following treatment of macroglossia.

A case of lymphangioma of the tongue with gross mandibular deformity is presented. Surgical reduction of tongue size resulted in considerable remodeling and the orthodontic implications of this remodelling are discussed.

[Clinicopathological study of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors].

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors are benign tumors, characterized by the presence of ghost cells and calcified materials. We evaluated clinical characteristics of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors in 21 cases at the Maxillofacial Surgery, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, between January 1979 and December 2006. Of the 21 lesions that were studied, 12 were observed in male patients, and 9 in female patients. The median age was 13.0 years (range, 4-69 years). Of the 21 lesions, 11 were located in the maxilla (intraosseous), 9 in the mandible (intraosseous), and 1 in the lower

TMJ metastasis: a unusual case report.

The metastases to the TMJ from a primary lung tumour is a very rare occurrence. This case is unusual in several aspects, as the non-reducible dislocation of the TMJ was the first clinical manifestation of the tumour. CT staging showed that this secondary tumour in the condyle was the only bone metastasis.

Aggressive epithelial odontogenic ghost cell tumor in the mandible: CT and MR imaging findings.

We report a case of aggressive epithelial odontogenic ghost cell tumor arising from the mandible in a 32-year-old man. On CT and MR studies, the tumor was seen as a large, heterogeneous soft-tissue mass that caused marked destruction of the mandible and invaded the mouth floor and tongue base. The tumor displayed a variety of densities and signal intensities on CT and MR images, which correlated well with the degree of cellularity of epithelial islands, abundance of ghost cells and eosinophilic materials, calcification, and cystic areas on histologic sections. Owing to the unpredictable biolog

Follicular carcinoma in ectopic thyroid gland. A case report.

Ectopic thyroid rest can be seen anywhere along the path of descent of the gland. The most ectopic thyroid tissue is a thyroglossal duct cyst associated with normal thyroid gland. Sublingual location is less common than a lingual ectopia. True malignant transformation in ectopic thyroid tissue is extremely rare. Such a malignancy is virtually always diagnosed only after surgical excision of the lesion at pathological examination. This report discusses a case of ectopic thyroid follicular carcinoma in the right submandibular region in the absence of orthotopic thyroid, discovered by chance afte

Burkitt's lymphoma with mandible, intra-abdominal and renal involvement--initial presentation of HIV infection in a 4-year-old child.

Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaw was first described as a jaw tumor occurring endemically in African children. We report a case of Burkitt's lymphoma in a child presenting with a painful jaw mass which proved to be Burkitt's lymphoma; renal involvement was also noted. The child was found to be HIV positive. Burkitt's may be the initial manifestation of HIV infection in the pediatric population.
