BACKGROUND: Systemic anaphylaxis is the most severe form of immediate hypersensitivity reaction. The activation of the complement system occurs during anaphylactic shock. The purpose of this study was to determine in a mouse model whether the lectin pathway of complement activation is involved in anaphylaxis.

OBJECTIVES: Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) is a serious human infection with fatal consequences, however, the pathogenic mechanisms associated with this disease remain unclear. Several lines of evidence suggest that haematogenous spread is a prerequisite for Acanthamoeba encephalitis but it is not clear how circulating amoebae cross the blood-brain barrier to gain entry into the central nervous system. Recurrent pregnancy loss, depending on the definition, affects 1% to 3% of women aiming to have a child. Little is known about the direct causes of recurrent pregnancy loss, and the condition is considered to have a multifactorial and complex pathogenesis. The aim of this review was to summarize the evaluation and the management of the condition with specific emphasis on immunologic biomarkers identified as risk factors as well as current immunologic treatment options. The review also highlights and discusses areas in need of further research.
