The purpose of this study was to search for an enhanced blood supply in the distal edge of the skin at the mastoid area in total auricular reconstruction. The authors modified the Nagata method by reserving a subcutaneous fascia pedicle (diameter, 3 to 5 mm) at the intersection of the point 11 to 13 mm from the residual ear tragus (or tragus projection) and 8 to 10 mm from the lowest point of the residual ear lobe. Compared with the traditional Nagata method group, the modified Nagata method group that retained the fascia pedicle of the mastoid skin flap had higher rates of excellent and good …

The purpose of this series of case studies was to determine if the frontal plane position of the cranial bones and atlas could be altered using dental orthotics, prescriptive insoles, or both concurrently. The cranial radiographs of four patients were reviewed for the study. Three of the patients were diagnosed as having a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and a preclinical clubfoot deformity. The fourth patient was diagnosed as having a TMJ dysfunction, a preclinical clubfoot deformity and a Catetgory II sacral occipital subluxation, as designated in the chiropractic's Sacro Occipital

OBJECTIVES: Mastoiditis commonly presents to ENT services. Following the UK introduction of the 13-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine in 2010, changes in the organisms of these infections were hypothesised. We aim to assess the microbiological profile of patients with acute mastoiditis in our centre.
METHODS: Retrospective review of patients admitted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital for mastoiditis between January 2017-September 2022. Data was collected from electronic patient records, microbiology and biochemistry reports.
RESULTS: A total of 108 patients were admitted: 61 males and 47 f…

Neurological complications of acute mastoiditis are rare but can be life threatening. Their presentation may be masked by the use of antibiotics. We present a unique case of acute otitis media progressing to occipital, extradural and subdural abscess formation and lateral sinus thrombosis in a child. The clinical course and management of a pre-adolescent male is presented and discussed. We review the incidence, presentation and treatment of occipital abscesses and lateral sinus thrombosis with acute mastoiditis. Following extended cortical mastoidectomy, neck exploration and broad spectrum int…

In modern clinical medical practice, middle-ear infection is a frequently reported condition. If untreated, persistent inflammation caused by infection may lead to perforation of the mastoid process or other portions of the temporal bone. When the middle-ear abscess penetrates the surrounding bone and invades the mastoid process, it causes mastoiditis. Abnormal osseous fistulae were observed on the temporal bones of individuals M137 and M199, which were unearthed in Qufu Olympic Sports Center Cemetery in Qufu City, Shandong Province, and date to the Warring States to the Han Dynasty (475 BCE-2…

Before visiting a plastic surgeon, some microtia patients may undergo canaloplasty for hearing improvement. In such cases, scarred tissues and the reconstructed external auditory canal in the postauricular area may cause a significant limitation in using the posterior auricular skin flap for ear reconstruction. In this article, we present a new method for auricular reconstruction in microtia patients with previous canaloplasty. By dividing a postauricular skin flap into an upper scalp extended skin flap and a lower mastoid extended skin flap at the level of a reconstructed external auditory ca…

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Although most studies have agreed that small mastoid air cell systems correlate with long-standing otitis media, the extent to which the environmental factors affect the development of MACS remains undetermined. We investigated the radiographic development of mastoid air cell systems in children with recurrent acute otitis media or otitis media with effusion who were treated with ventilation tubes early in life.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective follow-up.
METHODS: Of 305 consecutive patients aged less than 17 months with recurrent acute otitis media or otitis media with effus…

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of recurrent cholesteatoma can be roughly divided into residual lesions and re-retraction of the epithelium. To prevent both residual and re-retraction cholesteatoma, we performed canal wall down tympanoplasty with mastoid obliteration using the bone pate plate for canal wall reconstruction as a fundamental surgical treatment for patients with acquired cholesteatoma. We attempted to achieve the complete extirpation of cholesteatoma in the wide surgical field made by the canal wall down procedure and simultaneously prevent recurrent retraction cholesteatoma and rega…

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media is usually a self-limited bacterial infection; however, in rare cases, contiguous spread to the mastoid and adjacent dural venous sinuses may result in life-threatening intracranial complications. Otogenic transverse-sigmoid sinus thrombosis is uncommon in adults and represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge because its early presentation may be nonspecific and evidence guiding management remains limited.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 32-year-old man with no relevant medical history who presented with a 3-week history of right-sided otorrhea…
