Evidence of development and rapid spread of anthelminthic resistance in veterinary nematodes raises concern that the increasingly frequent treatments used in chemotherapy-based programmes to control human soil-transmitted helminths may select resistant worms. The aim of this study was to adapt, refine, and evaluate the Egg Hatch Assay (EHA) test, which has been used for veterinary nematodes, for field testing of benzimidazole (BZ) susceptibility/resistance in human hookworms. A second objective was to use this EHA to assess whether a population of worms resistant to mebendazole (MBZ) has built

Hydatid disease is endemic in several Mediterranean countries, posing an important health problem for these countries. The hydatid cyst is characterized by cystic lesions with clear boundaries, which can be observed in all parts of the body. Approximately 70 % of hydatid cysts are situated in the liver, followed by the lung (25 %). The kidneys, spleen, bile ducts, mesentery, soft tissue and brain are less frequent sites. We investigated patients who were treated for hydatid disease in our departments in the last 5 years with respect to localization of the disease, symptoms, surgical interventi

A 63-year-old Taiwan aboriginal male was admitted with exertional dyspnea, appetite loss and general fatigue. Echocardiography revealed moderate pericardial effusion and histological examination of the pericardiocentesis sample revealed an eosinophil-dominated bloody exudate. The larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis were detected in the pericardial specimen. After treatment with anti-nematodal agents, the eosinophilia decreased from 26% to 1% and the patient's symptoms improved. This is a rare case of Strongyloides-induced bloody pericardial effusion in a non-immunosuppressed patient.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the first cases of human trichinellosis due to Trichinella britovi in Serbia. A large trichinellosis outbreak due to the consumption of wild boar meat products took place during the 2015-2016 winter.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In January 2016, the Department of Infectious Diseases in Uzice examined 111 individuals with clinical and biological signs of trichinellosis, of whom 19 were hospitalized. Trichinella species identification was performed by multiplex PCR. Serodiagnosis was performed using immunofluorescence antibody assay, indirect ELISA, and Western Blot as

The metacestode stage of the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis causes the lethal disease alveolar echinococcosis. Current chemotherapeutic treatment options are based on benzimidazoles (albendazole and mebendazole), which are insufficient and hence alternative drugs are needed. In this study, we screened the 400 compounds of the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) Pathogen Box against E. multilocularis metacestodes. For the screen, we employed the phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) assay which assesses drug-induced damage on metacestodes, and identified ten new compounds with activity again

This study re-evaluates 13 out of 48 subjects involved in a trichinellosis outbreak that occurred in Central Italy (Umbria Region) in 1988 resulting from the consumption of raw boar meat harboring Trichinella britovi. During the outbreak, 28 of 48 serologically positive subjects were asymptomatic, whereas 20 subjects presented one or more clinical signs including but not limited to fever, myalgia, periorbital oedema and conjunctivitis. Several patients were hospitalized with severe clinical signs requiring treatment with mebendazole and corticosteroids. Upon re-evaluation of 13 patients, none

A parasitic tapeworm, called Taneia Echinococcus, causes hydatid disease. Hydatid disease is endemic in sheep and cattle-raising areas of the world. Hydatid disease of the central nervous system constitutes 2%-3% of all reported cases of hydatid cysts. In our institution, 23 children underwent surgery for intracranial hydatid cysts between 1979 and 1995. There were 14 boys and 9 girls, aged between 3 to 16 years (mean 8.8 years). Signs and symptoms were related to the site and size of the cyst. Headache and vomiting due to increased intracranial pressure were the most common presenting symptom

River blindness and lymphatic filariasis are two filarial diseases that globally affect millions of people mostly in impoverished countries. Current mass drug administration programs rely on drugs that primarily target the microfilariae, which are released from adult female worms. The female worms can live for several years, releasing millions of microfilariae throughout the course of infection. Thus, to stop transmission of infection and shorten the time to elimination of these diseases, a safe and effective drug that kills the adult stage is needed. The benzimidazole anthelmintic flubendazol

The case report of patient with asymptomatic liver echinococcosis several year observing was shown. The liver cyst occasionally revealed by ultrasound examination had doubled its diameter in two years, serological test result had suggested Echinococcus granulosus infection. After the initially treatment with benzimidazole the curative surgery had been conducted and histological examination confirmed the liver echinococcosis diagnosis. The headaches in two years after surgery needed the central nervous system echinococcosis considering in differential diagnostics. Because of the normal liver pa

Alveolar echinococcosis of the liver, caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, has the characteristics of a slow-growing liver cancer. The aim of the present work was to report a series of patients who received orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) for life-threatening disease. Our article summarizes the medical history, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of five patients who received OLT between 2001 and 2002. Most patients had a long history of symptomatic disease (iterative cholangitis, obstructive jaundice) and repeated abdominal surgery. One patient died during the hos

Platelets are part of body defence system, especially the antiparasite immunologic response. Platelets manifest their functions only after their activation. Thrombin activates platelets inducing change of their shape and causing secretion of certain substances. This study was designed to estimate blood platelets morphology as an indicator of their activation and effectiveness of antiparasite therapy. The study was conducted in group of 21 patients infected with T.spiralis before treatment (T1) and group of 19 patients after two weeks of treatment (T2). The diagnosis of trichinellosis was estab

To assess several chemotherapeutic schemes for control of enterobiasis, 738 children in five primary schools in Chunchon, Korea, were studied from May 1994 to June 1995. They were divided into 6 groups by the schemes: treatment of once or twice a year; treatment of positive cases or of whole class students; treatment with or without family members. The overall egg positive rate before intervention was 17.5% out of 789 children. Treating all individuals in a class together with family members of positive cases brought better control efficacy than other schemes (p = 0.000). However, when egg pos

The efficacy of hygienic measures and drug therapy of patients with enterobiasis has been compared in different organized groups of children in various regions of Lithuania. Nondrug measures and drug therapy were of similar efficacy. Vermox administration twice a year decreased the incidence of enterobiasis in children 1.9-fold, while nondrug measures decreased it 1.5-6.1-fold.

The incidence of cysticercosis in South Africa may well be alarming. Cysticercosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is almost exclusively confined to the parenchyma of the brain. Before the introduction of computed tomography (CT), invasion of the CNS by the parasite could only be suspected on the basis of evidence of previous infestation. The use of praziquantel in the treatment of cysticercosis is a major step towards eradicating the disease, but to be effective treatment must take cognizance of reinfection, the allergic reaction caused by the dying parasites, and the possible need for re

Thirteen patients with neurocysticercosis were studied and treated with flubendazole. Diagnostic procedures included computerized tomography (CT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In 12 cases treatment with the drug led to clinical improvement. CT showed that some cysts regressed in size, and in two patients they disappeared. The treatment also lowered the antibody levels. The drug was well tolerated and no allergic reaction or other side effects were observed.
