Interictal and Ictal Cognitive Performance in Episodic and Chronic Migraine.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is a disabling feature of migraine, affecting attention, memory, and executive functions. Differences between episodic and chronic migraine, as well as between interictal and ictal periods, remain unclear. We aimed to compare interictal cognitive performance in episodic and chronic migraine with healthy controls and to evaluate intra-individual changes during attacks. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study with within-subject repeated measures, migraine patients (32 EM, 32 CM) and 30 matched healthy controls underwent standardized cognitive testing (Mini Ment

Posterior cortical atrophy: reorganization of the dorsal attention network and its implications on volume loss and clinical performance.

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is associated with visual attention, episodic memory, and working memory deficits, in addition to the typical visual dysfunction. The dorsal attention network (DAN) plays a critical role in modulating these functions. However, little is known about the relationship of DAN with other core networks (visual and default mode networks (DMN)) and its relationships to volume loss and memory function in PCA. Fifty-seven PCA patients were compared to 60 cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals. Within-network connectivity was calculated within the frontal eye field (FEF)

The anatomy and function of the postrhinal cortex.

The parahippocampal cortex (PHC) in the primate brain is implicated in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) memory network for spatial and episodic memory, but the precise function of this region remains unclear. Importantly, the rodent postrhinal cortex (POR) provides a structural and connectional homolog to the primate PHC. This homology permits the use of the powerful tools available in rodent models to better understand the function of the PHC in the human and nonhuman primate brains. Although many articles have compared and dissociated the function of the rodent POR from other areas in the MTL

Applying the new research diagnostic criteria: MRI findings and neuropsychological correlations of prodromal AD.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the neuroimaging characteristics of prodromal AD (PrdAD) patients diagnosed using the new research criteria in a clinical setting. In order to further characterize these patients, we also study the relationship between neuropsychology, CSF biomarkers and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. METHODS/PATIENTS: 76 participants--24 controls (CTR), 20 amnesic patients, and 32 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients--were included in the study. PrdAD was defined on the basis of an objective episodic memory deficit and an AD CSF profile. Structural MRI was performed in all par

Positivity bias in past and future episodic thinking: Relationship with anxiety, depression, and retrieval-induced forgetting.

Positivity biases in autobiographical memory and episodic future thinking are considered important in mental wellbeing and are reduced in anxiety and depression. The inhibitory processes underlying retrieval-induced forgetting (RIF) have been proposed to contribute to these biases. This investigation found reduced positivity in past and future thinking to be associated with reduced memory specificity alongside greater levels of anxiety, depression, and rumination. Most notably, however, RIF was found to significantly predict memory valence. This indicates that RIF may be important in maintaini

A SPECT study of the anatomy of transient global amnesia.

This report describes single photon emission tomography (SPECT) evidence of transient, relative hypoperfusion of the right basal ganglia and left temporal lobe in a 60-year-old man studied during the acute phase of classical transient global amnesia (TGA). The findings are interpreted in the light of previous reports indicating that involvement of the right hemisphere or both cerebral hemispheres consistently predicts severe retrograde amnesia, in addition to the typical loss of anterograde memory observed during TGA. These deficits involving the right hemisphere and left temporal lobe may ref

Objective Memory Impairment in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: a Systematic Review and Multilevel Meta-Analysis of Trauma-Exposed Adult Populations.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is traditionally conceptualized as a disorder of fear learning and emotional dysregulation; however, accumulating evidence indicates that objective cognitive dysfunction, particularly memory impairment, represents a core and enduring feature of the disorder. Prior quantitative syntheses have been limited by heterogeneous control groups, pooling of disparate cognitive outcomes, and inadequate handling of statistical dependence across outcomes. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis is aimed at determining whether trauma-exposed adul

The effect of Alzheimer's biomarker positivity on neuropsychological networks.

Although network neuropsychology is a promising approach to the study of clinical profiles, the link between Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers and neuropsychological networks is still undetermined. We hypothesized that network differences would exist between biomarker-positive and biomarker-negative participants, and that these would be driven by network nodes corresponding to performance on tests of episodic memory, as this is the cognitive domain most distinctively affected by AD since the earliest clinical stages. In this case-control study, we investigated sub-cohorts of individuals who

Difficulties in retrieving specific details of autobiographical memories and imagining positive future events in individuals with acute but not remitted anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The factors that contribute to the maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN) are not fully understood, although it is generally accepted that depression is a core feature and contributes to poor prognosis. Individuals with depression tend to have difficulties in producing specific details of autobiographical memories and future episodes. Our aim was to investigate autobiographical memory and episodic future thinking (EFT) in individuals with AN (n = 46), people recovered from AN (recAN; n = 40), and non-affected controls (n = 35). METHOD: Using a remotely administered computerised ve

Predicting memory decline from left temporal lobe epilepsy surgery using preoperative fMRI: a multicenter study.

OBJECTIVE: While fMRI language laterality has been used to predict verbal memory after epilepsy surgery, supporting evidence is not yet definitive. The FMRI in Anterior Temporal Epilepsy Surgery (FATES) project was a prospective observational cohort study at 10 US epilepsy centers, performed to determine whether a multivariable model including fMRI language laterality can predict verbal memory outcome 6 months after left temporal lobe epilepsy surgery. METHODS: This analysis includes 70 adults who underwent left temporal lobe epilepsy surgeries including hippocampal resection for treatment of

Decreased functional connectivity in dorsolateral prefrontal cortical networks in adult macaques with neonatal hippocampal lesions: Relations to visual working memory deficits.

Neonatal hippocampal lesions in monkeys impairs normal performance on both relational and working memory tasks, suggesting that the early lesions have impacted the normal development of prefrontal-hippocampal functional interactions necessary for normal performance on these tasks. Given that working memory processes engage distributed neuronal networks associated with the prefrontal cortex, it is critical to explore the integrity of distributed neural networks of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) following neonatal hippocampal lesions in monkeys. We used resting-state functional MRI to as

Late Onset Alzheimer's Disease Risk Variants in Cognitive Decline: The PATH Through Life Study.

Recent genome wide association studies have identified a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with late onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). We examined the associations of 24 LOAD risk loci, individually and collectively as a genetic risk score, with cognitive function. We used data from 1,626 non-demented older Australians of European ancestry who were examined up to four times over 12 years on tests assessing episodic memory, working memory, vocabulary, and information processing speed. Linear mixed models were generated to examine associations between genetic factors and cogni

Altered Executive Function in Pre-Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: For the early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD), there is increasing interest in pre-mild cognitive impairment (pre-MCI). OBJECTIVE: We explored the neuropsychological characteristics in a group of pre-MCI and cognitively normal (CN) elderly individuals, with the aim of providing measures sensitive to cognitive change in pre-MCI. METHODS: We included 188 CN elderly and 77 individuals with pre-MCI. All participants underwent comprehensive clinical and neuropsychological assessment. We compared 17 cognitive tests between the CN and pre-MCI groups by using one-way ANOVAs with fa

Functional (dissociative) retrograde amnesia.

Retrograde amnesia is described as condition which can occur after direct brain damage, but which occurs more frequently as a result of a psychiatric illness. In order to understand the amnesic condition, content-based divisions of memory are defined. The measurement of retrograde memory is discussed and the dichotomy between "organic" and "psychogenic" retrograde amnesia is questioned. Briefly, brain damage-related etiologies of retrograde amnesia are mentioned. The major portion of the review is devoted to dissociative amnesia (also named psychogenic or functional amnesia) and to the discuss

Evidence for an association between KIBRA and late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

We recently reported evidence for an association between the individual variation in normal human episodic memory and a common variant of the KIBRA gene, KIBRA rs17070145 (T-allele). Since memory impairment is a cardinal clinical feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), we investigated the possibility of an association between the KIBRA gene and AD using data from neuronal gene expression, brain imaging studies, and genetic association tests. KIBRA was significantly over-expressed and three of its four known binding partners under-expressed in AD-affected hippocampal, posterior cingulate and tempo

Neural activation and memory for natural scenes: Explicit and spontaneous retrieval.

Stimulus repetition elicits either enhancement or suppression in neural activity, and a recent fMRI meta-analysis of repetition effects for visual stimuli (Kim, 2017) reported cross-stimulus repetition enhancement in medial and lateral parietal cortex, as well as regions of prefrontal, temporal, and posterior cingulate cortex. Repetition enhancement was assessed here for repeated and novel scenes presented in the context of either an explicit episodic recognition task or an implicit judgment task, in order to study the role of spontaneous retrieval of episodic memories. Regardless of whether e

Computational support, not primacy, distinguishes compensatory memory reorganization in epilepsy.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is associated with impairment in episodic memory. A substantial subgroup, however, is able to maintain adequate memory despite temporal lobe pathology. Missing from prior work in cognitive reorganization is a direct comparison of temporal lobe epilepsy patients with intact status with those who are memory impaired. Little is known about the regional activations, functional connectivities and/or network reconfigurations that implement changes in primary computations or support functions that drive adaptive plasticity and compensated memory. We utilized task functional MRI

Effects of different non-invasive brain stimulation interventions on cognitive and functional abilities in people with mild cognitive impairment and dementia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) shows promise for enhancing cognitive and functional abilities in people with cognitive impairment. However, its independent effects remain unclear due to the mixing of standalone and combination treatments in previous reviews. OBJECTIVE: To evaluates the short-term and sustained effects of NIBS on cognitive and functional abilities and identify optimal stimulation parameters in people with cognitive impairment. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials that compared NIBS interventions with sham/control interventions for people with cognitive imp

Dysfunction of the human memory systems: role of the dopaminergic transmission.

Human memory is currently considered to consist of different subsystems subserved by different anatomofunctional networks. However, the biochemical basis of memory disturbances remains unclear. The present review focuses on data from studies in Parkinson's disease in order to define the role played by the dopaminergic system in episodic memory and procedural learning. The pattern of episodic memory disturbances in Parkinson's disease is very specific: Parkinson's disease patients display a preserved ability to encode, store and consolidate new information but have difficulties in retrieving it

Recall of overlearned speech in noise: Developmental ERP findings and an episodic buffer frame for culturally situated brain activity.

How does extensively practiced speech memory remain dependent on momentary sensory input, and how does this interaction shape brain activity during development? This perspective integrates exploratory behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) findings from a culturally situated spoken-sequence recognition paradigm with a working memory episodic-buffer account. We reanalyzed data from children and young adults who had memorized Quranic passages despite limited Arabic comprehension. Participants heard incomplete passages with or without static noise and selected the missing final word from ph
