Key demographic and mental disorder diagnostic differences between Australian First Nations and non-First Nations clinic-referred children and adolescents assessed in a culturally appropriate and safe way.

OBJECTIVE: Increased point prevalence rates of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder have been reported in American Indian and Canadian First Nations children and adolescents. To date, in Australia, there has been no published examination of standardized Diagnostic and Statistical Manual mental disorder diagnoses in First Nations children and adolescents, determined after addressing key cultural methodological issues. METHODS: In all, 113 First Nations children and adolescents and 217 non-First Nations young people, aged 6-16  years, age, gender, mental disorder symptom severity,

The psychology of sport officiating.

Sport officials are key actors in organized and competitive sports. With numerous required tasks (e.g., attending to athlete safety and applying fair decisions), sport officials must possess several competencies including appropriate positioning, adequate fitness, excellent rule knowledge, and contextual judgement. To enhance the consistency and quality of sport officiating performances, psychological skills are also required. The purpose of this article is to broadly review the research as it pertains to the psychology of sport officiating. After outlining sport officials' roles, we describe

Spatial Cognition in Children With Physical Disability; What Is the Impact of Restricted Independent Exploration?

Given the developmental inter-relationship between motor ability and spatial skills, we investigated the impact of physical disability (PD) on spatial cognition. Fifty-three children with special educational needs including PD were divided into those who were wheelchair users (n = 34) and those with independent locomotion ability (n = 19). This division additionally enabled us to determine the impact of limited independent physical exploration (i.e., required wheelchair use) on spatial competence. We compared the spatial performance of children in these two PD groups to that of typically devel

Australian standards of care and treatment guidelines for transgender and gender diverse children and adolescents.

The Australian standards of care and treatment guidelines aim to maximise quality care provision to transgender and gender diverse (TGD) children and adolescents across Australia, while recognising the unique circumstances of providing such care to this population. Recommendations are made based on available empirical evidence and clinician consensus, and have been developed in consultation with Australian professionals from multiple disciplines working with the TGD population, TGD support organisations, as well as TGD children and adolescents and their families. Main recommendations: Recommen

Perinatal interventions for mothers and fathers who are survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide problem with severe long-term consequences. A history of CSA can impact the childbearing experience of mothers and fathers; affecting their mental health, parenting skills and compromising infant development. Nonetheless, the perinatal period offers huge opportunity for intervention and hope. This literature review collates evidence for perinatal psychosocial interventions targeting both mothers and fathers who are survivors of CSA. Publications dating from 1970 to June 2016 were searched using Medline, Maternity and Infant Health, PsychINFO, PsychAr

Diagnostic specificity and nonspecificity in the dimensions of preschool psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: The appropriateness of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) nosology for classifying preschool mental health disturbances continues to be debated. To inform this debate, we investigate whether preschool psychopathology shows differentiation along diagnostically specific lines when DSM-IV symptoms are aggregated statistically. METHODS: One thousand seventy-three parents of preschoolers aged 2-5 years attending a large pediatric clinic completed the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5. A stratified probability sample of 193 parents of high s

Redefining Access to Mental Health Care Through Sustained Tele-mentoring: A Report of the Instant Collaborative Video Consultations with Primary Care Doctors.

BACKGROUND: Mentoring primary care doctors (PCDs) improves their competency and aids in integrating psychiatric care into primary care, especially in resource-constrained settings. This study evaluates the socio-demographic, diagnostic, and treatment profiling of instant collaborative video consultations (i-CVCs) and the diagnostic (domain-wise and disorder-wise) and treatment concordance of PCDs with tele-psychiatrists. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that was a part of a digitally driven capacity-building program that provided tele-mentoring to PCDs via i-CVCs with tele-psychiatri

Resilience Factors in Women with Severe Early-Life Maltreatment.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life maltreatment (ELM) has long-lasting negative consequences and is the most important general risk factor for mental disorders. Nevertheless, a number of maltreated children grow up to become healthy adults and have therefore been called 'resilient'. The aim of the current study is to investigate 'resilience factors' in the context of severe ELM. METHOD: The study was part of the large multicenter project Understanding and Breaking the Intergenerational Cycle of Abuse (UBICA). A total of 89 women were examined, 33 with ELM and at least one lifetime mental disorder (nonr

Development and validation of the Social Emotional Assets (SEA) scale: a culturally responsive measure of social-emotional competencies in emerging adulthood.

Social emotional competencies in children and youth are associated with academic and psychological wellbeing. However, application to post-secondary students has been limited, and measures have been centered on the white, middle-class experience. Emerging adulthood is a time of heightened emotionality, instability, and relationship vulnerability. Therefore, the development of social emotion competences in post-secondary students could promote healthy self-regulatory and interpersonal skills. The aim of this work was to develop a culturally sensitive measure of social and emotional competencies

Differential pathways linking social interaction and Loneliness among university students in the age of artificial intelligence: the mediating role of Social Capital.

Based on Social Capital theory, this study explores the mechanisms linking emerging forms of social interaction and individual Loneliness among university students in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), from the perspective of Social Capital accumulation within AI-mediated social environments. Using survey data collected from university students, a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was employed to analyze the relationships among key variables. Specifically, social interaction preferences (including behavioral preferences and image presentation preferenc

Basic psychological needs mediate connectedness and meaning in life among Chinese college students.

According to the China National Mental Health Development Report (2021-2022), only 46.7% of Chinese university students report experiencing meaning in life (MIL), while approximately 40% exhibit existential confusion, highlighting a critical psychological challenge. This study examines, in Chinese college students, how connectedness (to self, others, and nature) relates to meaning in life and whether basic psychological needs mediate these associations, integrating variable- and person-centered approaches. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 807 college students (mean age = 19.40 ± 1.25

Opening Pandora's box - key facilitators of practice change in detecting and responding to childhood adversity - a practitioner perspective.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversities worsen physical and mental health across the lifespan. Health and social care practitioners play a key role in identifying and responding to childhood adversity, however, may be reluctant to do so due to a perceived lack of services to refer to, time pressures and a deficit of training and confidence. We aimed to (1) quantify changes in practitioner comfort and confidence to identify and respond to childhood adversity following a multimodal intervention within an integrated child and family health and social care hub and (2) to understand barriers and facilita

Sex differences in trajectories to cardio-renal and mental health outcomes following the onset of type 2 diabetes: An observational cohort study using multi-state analysis in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) presents a significant global health challenge, and its prevalence is expected to rise. T2D is associated with diverse complications, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. Previous research has demonstrated sex differences in the metabolic risk profile, clinical characteristics, and care related to T2D and its complications, including mental health conditions. In this study, we aimed to describe the trajectories of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, ESRD and mental

The role of PCOS in mental health and sexual function in women with obesity and a history of infertility.

STUDY QUESTION: Do mental health and sexual function differ between women with or without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with comparable BMI and fertility characteristics? SUMMARY ANSWER: Women with PCOS have a poorer mental quality of life than women without PCOS, but there were no differences in symptoms of depression, anxiety, physical quality of life or sexual function. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Various studies suggest that women with PCOS have poorer mental health, such as higher symptoms of anxiety and depression with a lower quality of life, and have an impaired sexual function compare

Mental Capacity Assessments Among Inpatients Referred to the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Unit at a University Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.

Clinicians routinely assess patients' mental capacity on a daily basis, but a more thorough assessment may be needed in complex cases. We aimed to identify the characteristics of inpatients in a general hospital, who were referred to a liaison psychiatry service for mental capacity assessment, reasons for the referrals, and the factors associated with their mental capacity. A 6-year retrospective study (2008-2013) was conducted using data collected routinely (e.g., age, gender, diagnosis, Thai Mental State Examination score, reasons for the referral, and the outcome of capacity assessment) on

Exploring Comorbidity Within Mental Disorders Among a Danish National Population.

IMPORTANCE: Individuals with mental disorders often develop comorbidity over time. Past studies of comorbidity have often restricted analyses to a subset of disorders and few studies have provided absolute risks of later comorbidity. OBJECTIVES: To undertake a comprehensive study of comorbidity within mental disorders, by providing temporally ordered age- and sex-specific pairwise estimates between the major groups of mental disorders, and to develop an interactive website to visualize all results and guide future research and clinical practice.
