Effects of different mixing ratios on emissions from passenger cars fueled with methanol/gasoline blends.

Regulated and unregulated emissions from four passenger cars fueled with methanol/gasoline blends at different mixing ratios (M15, M20, M30, M50, M85 and M100) were tested over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were sampled by Tenax TA and analyzed by thermal desorption-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (TD-GC/MS). Carbonyls were trapped on dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) cartridges and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that total emissions of VOCs and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p, m, o-xylene) from a…

Two cases of rapid onset Parkinson's syndrome following toxic ingestion of ethylene glycol and methanol.

Ethylene glycol and methanol are toxic alcohols commonly found in a variety of commercial products. We report two cases, one associated with ethylene glycol and one with methanol poisoning, which both led to acute hemorrhagic necrosis of the basal ganglia and resulted in acute Parkinson's syndrome. It is unlikely that oxalate crystal deposition is the only mechanism for such basal ganglia necrosis, because similar findings were seen following methanol intoxication. We discuss other possible mechanisms that may contribute towards this unusual neurotoxicity. Both of our patients survived their t…

Methanol extracts of Hamelia patens containing oxindole alkaloids relax KCl-induced contraction in rat myometrium.

Hamelia patens JAQC. (Rubiaceae) is a medicinal bush widely distributed in tropical areas of the American continent. It is used in Mexican Traditional Medicine for the treatment of menstrual disorders, therefore suggesting that its chemical constituents may have some effect on myometrium contractility. Physiological effects might differ due to quantitative variations in the content of alkaloids arising from its wide geographical distribution. To test this hypothesis, the content of oxindole alkaloids in methanol extracts of five different samples collected in Mexico was quantified by GC-MS. Ea…

Motor neuron disease and optic neuropathy after acute exposure to a methanol-containing solvent mixture.

A 34-years-old floor-layer developed optic neuropathy and motor neuron disease after being accidentally exposed to a solvent mixture containing methanol and other substances. Optic neuropathy is a complication of methanol poisoning, but the onset of a motor neuron disorder resembling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis after the exposure to these substances has not been previously described. The temporal onset of the clinical symptoms, biological plausibility, young age of the patient and absence of neurological disorders in the family history raises suspicion of a possible causative relationship.

Mutations affecting the expression of the MOX gene encoding peroxisomal methanol oxidase in Hansenula polymorpha.

In this study, aimed at identifying genetic factors acting positively upon the MOX gene, we report the isolation and characterisation of several methanol utilisation-defective (Mut-) mutants of Hansenula polymorpha. These fall into 12 complementation groups, eight of which show significant reductions in alcohol (methanol) oxidase activity in methanol. Three of these groups, identifying the MUT3, MUT5 and MUT10 loci, exhibit extremely low levels of MOX promoter activity, not only in methanol medium, but also during growth in glycerol or methylamine. We suggest that these loci play a significant…

Pulmonary abnormalities in patients intravenously receiving the methanol extraction residue (MER) of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin.

Eight of 64 patients receiving intravenous administration of methanol extraction residue (MER) of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), developed miliary-type pulmonary parenchymal changes. The clinical and radiological characteristics are described. An increased incidence was noted in patients with a history of previous BCG exposure or with positive PPD skin reactivity. Spontaneous resolution was observed upon discontinuation of MER. These changes most likely respresent a granulomatous inflammatory process, although no histological confirmation was obtained.

How Does Microsolvation of Protonated Methanol Clusters by Aprotic Molecules Converge to Solvation in Solutions?: Infrared Spectroscopy of H+(Methanol)n-(Benzene)m (n = 2-5, m = 2 and 3) Clusters in the Gas Phase.

Infrared spectroscopy of protonated methanol clusters H+(methanol)n in benzene solution has been studied by Stoyanov et al. (Chem. Eur. J. 2008, 14, 3596-3604). In H+(methanol)n, one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded chains extend in two directions from the central protonated site, and the OH group at each end of the hydrogen-bonded chains forms a π-hydrogen bond with the solvent benzene. It has been reported that the OH stretching frequencies of these π-hydrogen bonded ends change with the cluster size (n), reflecting the influence of the excess proton at the center of the cluster. To investigate t…

Methanol valorization into glycerol by engineering Bacillus methanolicus with thermostable enzymes and a tunable promoter library.

Glycerol serves as a versatile C3 platform chemical with broad applications spanning pharmaceuticals, personal care, food, cosmetics, and as a renewable feedstock for value-added chemicals, fuels, and materials. Methanol, a promising substrate derivable from CO2, biomass, and biogas offers a sustainable route for glycerol production. Herein, we employed the thermophilic methylotroph Bacillus methanolicus as a microbial cell factory for methanol bioconversion to glycerol. Given the poor thermolability of conventional mesophilic enzymes in the glycerol synthesis pathway at elevated temperatures,…

Tracking Dynamics of Supported Indium Oxide Catalysts in CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol by In Situ TEM.

Supported reducible oxides, such as indium oxide on monoclinic zirconia (In2O3/m-ZrO2), are promising catalysts for green methanol synthesis via CO2 hydrogenation. Growing evidence suggests that dynamic restructuring under reaction conditions plays a crucial but poorly understood role in catalytic performance. To address this, the direct visualization of the state-of-the-art In2O3/m-ZrO2 catalyst under CO2 hydrogenation conditions (T  =  553 K, P  =  1.9 bar, CO2:H2  =  1:4) is pioneered using in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), comparing its behavior to In2O3 on supports…

In vitro and in silico pharmacological effects of Rosmarinus officinalis leaf methanolic extracts and essential oils.

Rosmarinus officinalis L. has been widely used as a spice to enhance the shelf-life of food for centuries. While existing research in the literature suggests that the primary antibacterial component of this plant is its essential oil (EO), there is a lack of comparative studies employing both in vitro and in silico approaches to evaluate the antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, and antidiabetic properties of R. officinalis leaf EO (ROLEO) and R. officinalis leaf methanolic extract (ROLME). The present study investigates the bioactive components and biological activities of ROLEO and ROLME u…

In vitro biological activities of silver nanoparticles using methanolic leaf extract of Plumeria rubra.

Plant phytochemicals play an immense role in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, and the quality of phytochemicals used in the synthesis depends on the extraction method, solvent, temperature, etc. An extensive number of studies were carried out on the extraction of phytochemicals using aqueous extract during the synthesis of nanomaterials. Compared to distilled water, methanol can extract diverse phytochemicals at lower temperatures, and very few studies were done on this. Therefore, the present study aims to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the methanolic extract of Plumeria r…

Computer-aided design for enhancing the tolerance of ω-amine transaminase against methanol as a cosolvent.

A significant challenge hindering the application of enzymes in industrial biotechnology is their inadequate stability during processing. Employing organic solvents rather than aqueous systems for enzymatic catalysis presents several key benefits. However, excessive organic solvents as cosolvent that added to reaction system often inactivate enzymes. Exploiting highly active and methanol-resistant ω-amine transaminase from Aspergillus terreus (AtATA) is of great significance for (R)-chiral amines production. Herein, a computer-aided directed evolution method was employed for selecting the pote…
