Investigation of CardioFreeze Motion Correction for Cardiac PET/CT.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac imaging with positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) is a principal technique in the diagnosis and prognostication of coronary artery disease. PET/CT image quality can be negatively impacted by patient, cardiac, and respiratory motion. METHODS: We evaluated images from 102 patients clinically referred for cardiac rest/stress Rb-82 PET/CT myocardial perfusion imaging. Patient images were processed with a prototype data-driven motion detection algorithm and stratified by motion severity. Images were subjected to cardiac (CS) or cardiac and respiratory (…

Preserving spinal motion: lumbar disc arthroplasty in the US.

Symptomatic lumbar degenerative disc disease affects millions of patients, is a leading cause of physician visits annually, and significantly impacts healthcare systems globally. The gold standard treatment for this condition is spinal fusion, but its mechanism of eliminating segmental motion and risk of adjacent segment disease resulting in additional surgery has increased interest in alternative treatments. Lumbar disc arthroplasty has emerged as an alternative to fusion due to its comparable patient outcomes coupled with the ability to preserve spinal motion resulting in greater long-term b…

CardioODE-Track: Learning Bidirectional Cardiac Motion With Neural ODEs.

Accurate and temporally consistent cardiac motion tracking from dynamic imaging sequences is essential for quantitative functional assessment and disease analysis. However, existing learning-based approaches often struggle to preserve temporal coherence over long sequences and rarely exploit the intrinsic temporal structure of cardiac motion. In this article, we propose CardioODE-Track, a unified unsupervised framework for cardiac motion tracking. The framework first employs a frame-aware U-Net to estimate initial interframe (INF) motion fields, which are subsequently refined via continuous-ti…

Markerless motion capture affects talocrural joint frontal plane interpretation.

BACKGROUND: Motion analysis is critical for understanding injury mechanisms and enhancing prevention and rehabilitation strategies in sports medicine. Although conventional marker-based motion capture is effective for detailed biomechanical assessment, it is time-consuming, restricted to controlled environments, and susceptible to human error. Markerless motion capture offers greater convenience, enabling efficient data collection and on-site analysis. Nevertheless, its reliability for clinical applications requires validation. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study investigates whether using the Thei…

Self-phoretic oscillatory motion in a one-dimensional channel.

We study a simple model for a particle that is active due to repulsive self-phoresis and that has been proposed to model symmetric camphor grains. The particle generates a concentration field through the continuous emission of a chemical substance and its motion is driven by gradients of this field as it diffuses within a confined channel whose ends perfectly reflect the chemical. The reflection of the chemical field leads to an effective confinement of the particle, which itself is reflected before encountering the channel ends. The system displays a transition from a passive state, where the…

Directed droplet motion - Its versatile nature and anticipated applications.

Applications such as digital microfluidics and bio-diagnostics rely on droplet locomotion. A prominent example of such motion is durotaxis, a phenomenon that requires a stiffness gradient along a surface for the transport of liquids, cells, or other nano-objects. Using surfaces with varying properties in specific directions can be exploited as a universal concept for fluid transport with or without external energy supply. Changes in properties may refer to substrate patterns, Laplace pressure changes, wettability gradients, etc., leading to exciting phenomena, which can be employed in novel ap…

Hemifield-Specific Motion Extrapolation Reveals Limits of Interhemispheric Integration.

The accurate perception of moving objects is a fundamental challenge for the visual system, which must compensate for neural processing delays. Motion extrapolation is a proposed mechanism whereby the brain predicts an object's future position. We investigated how an object's motion history shapes its perceived position using the flash-jump illusion in humans of either sex, in which a brief color change in a moving bar is mislocalized as further along the direction of motion. Across two experiments, we found that longer preceding motion sequences improved localization accuracy, consistent with…

Memristive Motion-Streak Neuron for Spatiotemporal Multiple Object Detection.

Conventional artificial vision systems process dynamic scenes inefficiently by reconstructing motion from discrete frames, which requires post-processing. In contrast, real-world environments containing multiple moving objects demand sensor-level discrimination. This work presents a memristive motion-streak neuron that performs spatiotemporal encoding by integrating an Al/InGaZnO/Al optomemristor with an Ag/HfO2/Pt dynamic memristor, whose relaxation dynamics provide temporal memory. In this system, the presence time of moving objects is detected by decay of the output current, allowing motion…

Moment-Reenacting: Inverse Motion Degradation With Cross-Shutter Guidance.

Motion degradation, manifested as blur in global shutter (GS) images or rolling shutter (RS) distortion in RS counterparts, remains a fundamental challenge in computational imaging, especially under fast motion or low-light conditions. While prior works have treated blur decomposition and RS temporal super-resolution as separate tasks, this separation fails to exploit their intrinsic complementarity. In this paper, we propose a unified framework to invert motion degradation and reenact imaging moment by jointly leveraging the complementary characteristics of GS blur and RS distortion. To this …

Slow motion videography in Parkinson's disease: unraveling masked phenomenology.

Slow motion (SM) videography provides a novel approach to documenting and understanding movement disorders by revealing subtle phenomenological features not easily captured at normal speed. While widely used in sports and wildlife analysis, its application in clinical neurology remains limited. We present a case series of four patients with Parkinson’s disease in whom SM videography uncovered unique motor signatures. Case 1 revealed the “Scoop Sign” of hand tremor, highlighting wrist and forearm rotational components. Case 2 demonstrated incessant progressive micrographia, a distinctive writin…

Forward Dynamics: Modern Insights into Mitral Systolic Anterior Motion.

Systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve can occur either in association with or in the absence of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). SAM induces dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) and, in the majority of cases, is associated with a substantial degree of mitral regurgitation (MR) that significantly impacts patient morbidity and mortality. This narrative review explores the contemporary understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of SAM, focusing particularly on surgical strategies and the novel therapeutic class of cardiac myos…

Transcriptional activity generates chromatin motion that drives nuclear blebbing.

Abnormal nuclear blebbing is a hallmark of human diseases, including cancers and age-related disorders. Previous work has outlined that nucl … finement and contraction. Instead, we find that transcriptional activity regulates chromatin domain motion measured by mean square displacement (MSD) of chromatin domains labeled via transfected Cy3-dNTPs. Increasing chromatin domain motion using an established RAD51 inhibitor B02 resulted in increased nuclear blebbing. Thus, we reveal that transcription …

Motion Mitigation Techniques for Abdominal and Cardiac MR Imaging.

MRI of the heart and abdominal organs provides unparalleled soft tissue contrast and quantitative biomarkers, yet remains highly susceptible to physiological motion. Contractions of the myocardium, respiratory excursions, peristalsis, vascular pulsatility, and unpredictable bulk patient movement generate artifacts that impair image quality, limit reproducibility, and may necessitate repeat scans. This review summarizes motion correction strategies in cardiac and abdominal MRI, emphasizing both clinical applications and methodological principles. Techniques to address motion can be broadly cate…

Motion Misperception in Anisomyopia Before and After Optical Correction.

PURPOSE: To investigate interocular delay in anisomyopes at different spatial frequencies. METHODS: Interocular delay (difference in processing speeds between eyes) was measured psychophysically in 21 anisomyopes (observers with a large refractive difference), 20 isomyopes, and 19 emmetropes at 0.5, 1, and 2 cycles per degree (c/deg). During the visual task, small Gabor elements with lateral movements were shown to both eyes. When interocular delay was present, the stimuli created an illusory percept of a cylinder rotating in depth (motion misperception) despite no depth cues. Anisomyopes and…

Residual Foveal Motion Facilitates Processing of Visually Tracked Objects.

Humans and other species visually track moving objects via pursuit eye movements. These movements fail to stabilize the stimulus on the retina, an effect often attributed to errors in oculomotor control. However, it remains unclear whether the resulting residual retinal motion serves visual functions. Using high-resolution eye tracking, we reconstructed foveal motion during discrimination of both stationary and moving stimuli. We show that the retinal motion elicited by pursuit is heavily constrained and strikingly mirrors the motion present during normal active fixation. We then show that thi…

Object continuity through invisible retinal motion at saccadic speed.

Saccadic eye movements rapidly shift the visual scene across the retina, raising the question of how object correspondence is established between gaze fixations. Using submillisecond video projection, we isolated the role of high-speed retinal motion from saccade-related extraretinal signals. We introduced high-speed motion in a quartet motion display, a classic tool for studying long-distance object correspondence. While motion visibility dropped to chance level at saccadic speeds, even invisible motion robustly biased object correspondence. These results demonstrate that retinal motion alone…

Species-specific spectral tuning of motion vision in butterflies.

Color provides an important visual dimension for object detection and classification. In most animals, color and motion vision are largely separated throughout early stages of visual processing. However, accumulating evidence indicates crosstalk between chromatic and achromatic pathways. Here, we investigate the spectral sensitivity of the motion-vision pathway at the level of pre-motor descending neurons (DNs) in two butterfly species with different retinal compositions and wing coloration. Butterflies engage in fast, agile flight within often colorful visual ecologies, which may heighten evo…
