Case report: cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis, the human botfly.

Cutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis, the human botfly, involves the infestation of human tissue with fly larvae, and is common in Central and South America. We report a case of a 57-year-old man with cutaneous myiasis imported into the US from Belize. The epidemiology, biological life cycle, clinical presentation, and various methods of larval extraction, including incision and drainage, are discussed.

[Wound myiasis due to Wohlfahrtia magnifica. First human case in Morocco].

Wohlfahrtia magnifica is a frequent fly in countries with high breeding activity: Australia, South Africa or Arab country The parasitological infestation occurred essentially during the summer, favourable period to the biological evolution of the flies. In this work, we report one case of wound myiasis that complicates a cutaneous lesion caused by larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. This observation constitutes the first human case in our country.

Intracerebral myiasis from Hypoderma bovis larva in a child. Case report.

Cerebral myiasis with a 10-day history of convulsions due to an intracerebral hematoma caused by a Hypoderma bovis larva is reported in an 8-year-old child. Computerized tomography (CT) showed the hematoma in a right parieto-occipital location. The H. bovis larva and the extensive intracerebral hematoma were discovered during surgery. Among human parasitoses, cerebral myiasis is rare: a review of the literature revealed only two reports, one published in 1969 and one in 1980. This is the first case that has been diagnosed as cerebral myiasis with exact identification of the Hypoderma bovis lar…

Unravelling the role of Calliphoridae (Insecta: Diptera) as a causative agent of myiasis in sheep with Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) as the first documented agent of myiasis in ruminants from Kashmir Himalaya, India.

PURPOSE: Calliphorid flies commonly cause traumatic myiasis in sheep, which refers to the parasitic infestation by fly larvae in living vertebrate tissues and hence poses a great threat to the well-being of vertebrates. In the present study, surveys were carried out in different regions of the Kashmir Himalaya to document the incidence and prevalence caused by myiasis in sheep. METHODS: Seasonal surveys were conducted at the selected study locations, especially in the areas with a high density of nomadic herding. The wounds of the sheep were examined for the presence of calliphorid larvae. Th…

Traumatic myiasis in wild animals admitted to a rehabilitation center in southeastern Turkey.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traumatic myiasis develops when dipteran larvae colonize pre-existing wounds and may complicate the management of injured wildlife. Wildlife-associated cases remain insufficiently documented, particularly in reptiles and wild ungulates. This study aimed to characterize traumatic myiasis in wild animals admitted to a rehabilitation center in southeastern Turkey and to identify the causative dipteran species using integrated morphological and molecular approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight wild animals with traumatic myiasis admitted between December 2020 and Septe…

An Immigrant With Intestinal Myiasis in the United States: A Case Report and a Review of the Literature.

Myiasis is an infestation of human tissue by fly larvae. Intestinal myiasis occurs when fly eggs or larvae in contaminated food or water survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract and are found in the stool or bowel lumen. It is more prevalent in developing countries and can present with nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms that mimic common conditions. A 55-year-old Nepalese-American woman, with a long history of intermittent abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, underwent CT imaging, which demonstrated a 2 cm colonic narrowing with wall thickening of the proximal transverse colon. C…

Myiasis by the Toad Fly (Lucilia bufonivora; Calliphoidae) in Amphibians in Montana, USA.

Toad flies in the genus Lucilia (previously referred to as Bufolucilia spp.) parasitize and cause myiasis in several amphibian species in North America. From 2019 to 2022, we documented Lucilia bufonivora infections in post-metamorphic western toads (Anaxyrus boreas) during amphibian surveys in four wetlands in Glacier National Park, Montana, US. We found nine infected adult toads in 2019, seven infected adults in 2020, one infected juvenile in 2021, and five infected adults plus one infected juvenile in 2022. We also captured Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) during these same survey…

Ivermectin treatment for nasal myiasis complicated by orbital cellulitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nasal myiasis is a rare parasitic infestation caused by fly larvae, which can lead to serious complications, such as orbital cellulitis, if not treated promptly. Early recognition and intervention are essential to prevent further complications. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 55-year-old Thai female with advanced-stage malignant melanoma of the right nasal cavity, treated with endoscopic tumor removal and 3 months of concurrent chemoradiation. The patient developed nasal myiasis and orbital cellulitis secondary to maggot infestation. A multidisciplinary approach, includi…

Cerebral Myiasis, An Unexpected Intraoperative Finding - A Case Report and Systematic Review.

Postoperative complications, exemplified by surgical site infections, are commonplace in the realm of daily surgical interventions. Conversely, certain infectious entities, such as cerebral myiasis (CM), are distinctly rare. This report elucidates the clinical presentation of a 74-year-old female afflicted with a CSF fistula, within the context of a preceding surgical microvascular decompression employing a suboccipital craniotomy approach. Notably, the course of evaluation and treatment unveiled an intraoperative manifestation of severe CM. This case report underscores the critical significan…

Cutaneous myiasis in neglected patients with autoimmune bullous disorders: a case series.

Cutaneous myiasis is an infestation of the tissues and organs of living vertebrates and humans by fly larvae, usually those belonging to the Calliphoridae family. The larvae feed on the host's necrotic or living tissue. Pre-existing dermatological conditions and poor hygiene are predisposing factors for cutaneous myiasis, which is especially common among neglected, dependent patients. Our literature search revealed only a few case reports of cutaneous myiasis in autoimmune bullous disorders (AIBDs). Cutaneous myiasis is more common in the population of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu beca…

Oral myiasis: A known case of scar epilepsy in a 45-year-old.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Oral myiasis (OM) is brought on by parasitic larvae that consume both living and dead tissue. Our study aims to present the possible circumstances under which people suffer from this deteriorating condition in juxtaposition to scar epilepsy. ABSTRACT: A uncommon disease known as oral myiasis (OM) is brought on by parasitic larvae that consume both living and dead tissue. OM cases in humans are scarce, although most of those reported come from developing nations or tropical regions. This case report describes a rare larvae infestation in the oral cavity of a 45-year-old w…
