Unexpected Diagnosis at 3 Years Old: Primary Pulmonary Ewing Sarcoma.

Ewing sarcoma is a malignancy belonging to the group of small round blue cell neoplasms. Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma is a very rare malignancy, and very few reports on this topic exist. Bone tumors are most commonly described in the 2nd and 3rd decades of life, and occur predominantly in males. The age of onset for extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma is reportedly greater. We present the case of a 3-year-old girl diagnosed with primary pulmonary Ewing sarcoma with metastasis to the contralateral lung. To our knowledge, there are no reported cases at this age.

68 Ga-DOTATATE and 18 F-FDG PET Imaging of a Rare Chordoid Meningioma With Intracranial Recurrence and Extracranial Metastases.

Chordoid meningiomas, rare meningioma variants, are characterized by their histopathological features and clinical behavior resembling that of other chondroid/myxoid neoplasms. We present a case of pathology-proven chordoid meningioma imaged with both 68 Ga-DOTATATE and 18 F-FDG PET images during a complicated postoperative course with multiple episodes of local recurrence and, ultimately, extracranial metastasis. This case underscores the aggressive behavior of chordoid meningiomas while highlighting how molecular imaging plays an important role in clinical monitoring and guidance of manageme

Management of Small Bowel Neuroendocrine Tumors.

Small bowel neuroendocrine tumors (SBNETS) are slow-growing neoplasms with a noted propensity toward metastasis and comparatively favorable prognosis. The presentation of SBNETs is varied, although abdominal pain and obstructive symptoms are the most common presenting symptoms. In patients with metastases, hypersecretion of serotonin and other bioactive amines results in diarrhea, flushing, valvular heart disease, and bronchospasm, termed carcinoid syndrome. The treatment of SBNETs is multimodal and includes surgery, liver-directed therapy, somatostatin analogues, targeted therapy, and peptide

11C-Methionine-Avid Plasmablastic Lymphoma.

A 73-year-old woman had a diagnosis of a plasmablastic lymphoma by the excision of the right parotid gland. Two years after the diagnosis, the patient underwent a whole-body C-methionine PET/CT in order to evaluate the amino acid avidity of a scalp metastasis and for plasmablastic lymphoma restaging. C-methionine uptake was detected in the scalp, in several bone sites, and in the cricoid cartilage. Plasmablastic lymphoma is a subtype of B-cell lymphoma with an aggressive behavior and a poor prognosis. C-methionine appears to be a promising tracer for paraprotein-producing neoplasms.

Malignant seminoma with metastasis, Sertoli cell tumor, and pheochromocytoma in a spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) and malignant seminoma with metastasis in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Seminoma with metastasis was diagnosed in a spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) and an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Sertoli cell tumor and pheochromocytoma were also diagnosed in the spotted dolphin. The spotted and bottlenose dolphins were adult males that stranded and died on the coasts of northwest Florida and southeast North Carolina, respectively. Neoplasia is infrequently reported in cetaceans. This is the first report of seminoma, Sertoli cell tumor, and pheochromocytoma in a dolphin, the first report of three distinct neoplasms in a dolphin, and one of the few rep

Malignant melanoma arising in a sebaceous nevus of the scalp.

This is the first report of malignant melanoma arising from sebaceous nevus (SN) of the scalp, although it has been known that various benign and malignant neoplasms may develop in association with SN. After the excisional biopsy for SN with 5 mm free margin, pathological examination revealed the coexistence of nodular melanoma invading to the reticular dermis (IV level of Clark) for a maximal depth of 4 mm. After resection with another 20 mm free margin, there has been no evidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis for nine years.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the skin is rare. Ten cases from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were studied. Seven of the 10 cases recurred after initial surgery. The interval between surgery and recurrence ranged from 4 months to 20 years. In one case there was metastasis to lung and pleura. Histologically, cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma is indistinguishable from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland. The diagnostic histologic features and the differentiation of adenoid cystic carcinoma from other cutaneous neoplasms are discussed.

Sacral ependymoma presents 20 years after initial posterior fossa lesion.

Posterior fossa ependymomas (PFEs) are designated histologically as low-grade neoplasms. Despite being characterised as benign, cases of metastasis have been reported only a few times with the patients concurrently diagnosed with the primary tumour. Interval drop metastasis or spontaneous second distal tumours are extremely rare and, in most cases, are diagnosed within a few months of primary tumour resection. Here, we report a patient with a grade 2 paediatric PFE exhibiting a 20-year interval to a second sacral ependymoma. The patient was initially diagnosed with a PFE at the age of 10 years

Meningioma as the host for metastatic breast cancer: A rare occurrence with important therapeutic impact.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare condition. There are few reports of metastatic tumors within intracranial tumors, including meningiomas. Since some metastatic tumors have osteoblastic imaging pattern, it is not always easy to differentiate them from meningioma on preoperative studies. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old female referred to our center complaining about a progressive headache, nausea, and vomiting for the past month. She had a history of breast cancer treated with radical mastectomy (5 years ago) and adjuvant chemotherapy (until 1 year ago). Workups revealed a dural-

Current Drug Targets for Thymic Neoplasms.

Thymic neoplasms are rare malignant tumors, and the mainstay of treatment for patients with thymic tumors is surgical resection. Chemotherapy is necessary for patients with extensive tumor invasion or metastasis who are unable to undergo complete radical excision. However, only two-thirds of these patients respond to chemotherapy. For those patients who are resistant to chemotherapy, targeted therapy has been proposed as a beneficial alternative. Many genes implicated in tumorigenesis and metastasis have been demonstrated to be therapeutic targets in thymic malignancies. Currently, a number of

Neuroendocrine tumor metastatic to the orbit treated with radiotherapy.

Neuroendocrine tumors are rare neoplasms that infrequently metastasize to the orbit. Given that patients with these tumors may have prolonged survival despite dissemination, maintaining quality of life by providing early diagnosis and effective treatment to preserve vision and comfort is a fundamental issue. We report the case of a 79-year old woman who presented with well-differentiated metastatic neuroendocrine tumor to the liver with no carcinoid syndrome and was started on intramuscular long-acting octreotide with disease stabilization. Two years later she developed right-sided diplopia as

Feminizing adrenal tumors: Our experience about three cases.

Feminizing adrenal tumors (FATs) are very rare as they account for less than 2% of all the adrenal neoplasms. Their prognosis is deemed to be very poor. We aimed to present a mono centre (adult and pediatric) experience over a long period of time (January 1980 to Jun 2012). During the study period, we observed only three cases in men aged 22 (2 cases) and 45 (1 case). They all consulted for a painful gynecomastia, decreased libido and impotency. Estradiol was high in two cases at presentation, and after a relapsing tumor in the third one. All had big adrenal tumors (5.9, 6, and 17 cm), and a m

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor with synchronous isolated parenchymal splenic metastasis of ovarian cancer.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) represents the most common intramural mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract, but the synchronous occurrence of GIST in the stomach and gynecological cancer is rare. We present a unique case of a 56-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with the synchronous development of GIST and an isolated parenchymal splenic metastasis of ovarian cancer. She underwent a wide local excision of gastric lesions with splenectomy. A morphological (histological and immunohistochemical) study established a spindle-cell type of gastrointestinal tumor that expresse

Synchronous bilateral phyllodes tumors with discordant grades and false-positive axillary 18F-FDG PET-CT uptake: a case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Phyllodes tumors are uncommon fibroepithelial breast neoplasms with variable biologic behavior. Synchronous bilateral phyllodes tumors are exceptionally rare, and the interpretation of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET-CT) may be confounded by tumor necrosis and inflammation, leading to false-positive nodal staging. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 44-year-old Korean woman presented with a rapidly enlarging, painful, ulcerated left breast mass for 3 months. She had no nipple discharge, fever, or weight loss. A right breast lesion was clinically

Myxoid adrenal cortical neoplasms.

Myxoid adrenal cortical neoplasms are rare, and to our knowledge, only about 23 cases have been reported in the literature, including 13 carcinomas and 10 adenomas. We recently experienced 4 cases of myxoid adrenal cortical neoplasms (3 benign and 1 borderline malignancy) and studied the clinical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical features of these neoplasms. There were 2 male and 2 female patients (age range, 37-61 years, mean, 48 years). All but 1 patient had hormone-related symptoms. The tumors weighed from 24.1 to 94 g (size, 4.1-9.8 cm). They were variably encapsulated with areas

Endometrioid proliferative and low malignant potential tumors of the ovary. A clinicopathologic study of 46 cases.

We evaluated 41 endometroid neoplasms with features intermediate between a benign endometrioid tumor and endometrioid carcinoma. Although these tumors showed various degrees of epithelial proliferation, they lacked the destructive stromal invasion of carcinoma. Intermediate endometrioid tumors were subdivided into proliferative endometrioid tumors (PET), endometrioid tumors of low malignant potential (ETLMP), and ETLMP with microscopic areas of invasion. PET were adenofibromas with solid aggregates of epithelial proliferation not exceeding 5 mm in any dimension, whereas ETLMP either had noninv

Two Interesting Findings in One Case: Xanthogranulomatous Inflammation of the Colon and Isolated Widespread Liver Metastasis of Prostate Cancer on 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT.

Xanthogranulomatous inflammatory disease is a rare and benign condition that affects various organs. Due to their aggressive nature, the clinical and radiological findings of xanthogranulomatous inflammatory diseases are often misdiagnosed as malignant neoplasms. Prostate cancer metastases are most prevalent in lymph nodes and bones, with less common locations including the lung, liver, and brain. However, widespread liver metastasis is rare without metastatic dissemination to other sites. Herein, we present a case in which these 2 rare conditions were seen together on 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT.

Unmasking the Silent Culprit: Gastric Neuroendocrine Tumor in the Setting of Iron Deficiency Anemia.

Gastric neuroendocrine tumors (GNETs) are uncommon neoplasms; it is classified into four subtypes based on low to high risk of progression and developing metastasis. GNETs can be asymptomatic or present with nonspecific signs and symptoms, including dyspepsia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA). In people who menstruate, iron deficiency is often attributed to menstrual cycles, and they may not undergo investigation for gastrointestinal sources. We present a case of a young female with long-standing iron deficiency and menorrhagia, who was found to have a rare GNET, most consistent with a type 3 s

Cutaneous metastasis on the nasal tip: first clinical sign of pulmonary carcinoid tumor.

Skin metastases are rare and may occur in the context of a known metastatic disease or be the first clinical sign of an underlying primary tumor. In the case of carcinoid neoplasms, determining whether the cutaneous tumor is primary or secondary and identifying the tumor origin in metastatic cases is not always an easy task. This is the report of a case of cutaneous metastasis presenting as the first clinical manifestation of a previously unknown pulmonary carcinoid tumor, including the discussion of histopathological and immunohistochemical findings that allowed an adequate diagnosis of the t
