BACKGROUND: Carcinosarcoma of the salivary glands is a rare neoplasm, and the minimally invasive form constitutes a subgroup with a more favorable prognosis. The cytomorphologic features of this neoplasm can be appreciated on fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

Among the most interesting manifestations of neoplasms is the production of functional peptides and hormones that may induce unique clinical syndromes. It has become obvious in the last decades that a wide range of endocrine tumors secrete hormones not normally associated with the tissue in which the neoplasm arises. The resultant syndromes, some of which resemble other endocrine entities, can be the first clinical manifestation of malignant disease or a harbinger of cancer recurrence. The development of these disorders does not necessarily correlate with cancer stage or unfavorable prognosis.

PROBLEM: Temporal bone tumours are rare head and neck cancers that may involve both the parotid and the neck. In cases with concomitant temporal bone and parotid tissue involvement, tumour origin determination can be challenging. A tumour with parotid and temporal bone involvement is usually of temporal origin. The tumour may also be a rare parotid neoplasm with intratemporal invasion through the facial nerve, such as adenoid cystic carcinoma. These are slow-growing, yet locally aggressive tumours marked by late-stage distant metastases.

Liver imaging is a highly evolving field with new imaging contrast agents and modalities. Knowledge of the different imaging options and what they have to offer in primary and metastatic liver disease is essential for appropriate diagnosis, staging, and prognosis in patients. This review summarizes the major imaging modalities in liver neoplasms and provides specific discussion of imaging hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, and colorectal liver metastases. The final sections provide an overview of presurgical imaging relevant to planning hepatectomies and ablative procedures.

HIV protease inhibitors are antiretroviral drugs able to prevent production of infectious particles. It has been shown that these protease inhibitors are able to inhibit cancer-promoted angiogenesis in patients affected by Kaposi's sarcoma. A preliminary phase I study on dogs with stage III splenic hemangiosarcoma was designed in order to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of the protease inhibitor Indinavir to delay the progression of this advanced neoplasm. The results suggest that Indinavir is potentially beneficial in dogs affected by microscopic residual disease.

Perivascular epithelioid tumors (PEComas) are a rare group of mesenchymal neoplasms with an unpredictable natural history and uncertain malignant potential. Uterine involvement and their association with tuberous sclerosis are typical for these tumors. We present a case of a 40-year old patient who was incidentally diagnosed of a uterine PEComa and serial studies of PET-CT with FDG were performed for staging and therapeutic response assessment. FDG PET-CT proved to be a valuable tool for detecting unsuspected pulmonary metastases and defining the reassessment of the patient after chemotherapy.
