[Diagnostic accuracy and pitfalls in fine needle aspiration cytology of salivary glands: a study of 113 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) features of various salivary gland lesions and to analyze the respective diagnostic value and pitfalls. METHODS: 113 FNAC specimens of salivary gland lesions were reviewed and correlated with clinical and histopathologic findings. RESULTS: The FNAC diagnostic failure (2); non-neoplastic lesions (12); benign neoplasm (82) and malignant neoplasm (17). Cytologically, the distinction between cellular pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and basal cell adenoma could be difficult due to their overlapping morphologic feature

Genetic and Immunohistochemical Profiling of Mammary Hidradenoma and Comparison to Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is exceedingly rare in the breast, with <45 cases reported in the literature. Although estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor/human epidermal growth factor 2 triple-negative, MEC is characterized as a special subtype of breast carcinoma with significantly better prognosis than conventional basal-type tumors. Cutaneous hidradenoma (HA) is considered a benign adnexal neoplasm showing histomorphologic overlap with MEC. Rare cases of HA have also been reported in the breast, but these are relatively uncharacterized. In this study, we examined the clinicopathologic,

Cystic Basal Cell Carcinoma with a Giant Vulvar Cyst.

Cystic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a rare subtype of BCC (1). Histologically, it is usually characterized by multiple small cysts without a clinical cystic appearance (2). Herein, we report an unusual case of cystic BCC with a large vulvar cyst. A 90-year-old Japanese woman visited our hospital with a pedunculated subcutaneous nodule on her right labia majora that had persisted for 10 years and had grown rapidly in the past 4 years. The initial examination revealed a cystic tumor (size 90×70×60 mm) (Figure 1, A). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic mass surrounded by a focally thick

Glabellar flap technique in oculoplastic surgery.

Facial skin defect reconstruction in medial-canthal area of the lids can be a challenge even when performed by a skilled surgeon. The excision of large tumors in this area leads to significant surgical defects that cannot be repaired by merely closing the wound. The glabellar area provides a source of redundant skin with similar characteristics to that of the medial-canthal lid area. The purpose show the possibility of the glabellar flap technique surgery in patients after tumor excision in the medial canthal area with the formation of a large surgical defect and especially those with defect u

Pediatric synchronous multifocal and disseminated cerebrospinal classic medulloblastoma revealed by bilateral decreased visual acuity: a case report.

Medulloblastoma (MB) is a rapidly growing malignant solid tumor that arises from stem cells located in the subependymal germinal matrix or outer granular layer of the cerebellum. It represents 15 to 30% of pediatric brain tumors and less than 1% of primary brain tumors. The reason for the high incidence of MB in children compared to adults is the embryonic origin of the tumor. In typical cases, MB manifests as a solitary lesion in the fourth ventricle or in the cerebellar parenchyma; cases of synchronous multifocal and disseminated MB are quite rare in patients without familial tumor syndromes

Observational study of a series of basal cell carcinomas: Evaluation of location as a risk factor for recurrence.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is locally aggressive and its prognosis depends on the risk of recurrence. The initial location of the tumor is a key criterion for calculating the risk of recurrence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sites that appear to be most at risk of recurrence of BCC. All cases of BCC analyzed at the anatomopathology laboratory of the University Hospital of Montpellier for 1 year were retrospectively included. In case of recurrence on the same site, only carcinomas that had previously been completely removed were analyzed. Among 803 BCC, 37 (4.6%) were confirmed as r

It's time for Mohs: Micrographic surgery for the treatment of high-risk basal cell carcinomas of the head and neck regions.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common variety of non-melanoma skin cancer and its incidence is increasing worldwide. The centrofacial sites (area H) are considered a high-risk factor for BCC local recurrence. Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a technique that allows intraoperative microscopic control of the surgical margins and is a good treatment option when tissue conservation is required for esthetic or functional reasons or for high-risk lesions. The present study aimed to evaluate the recurrence rate of head and neck high-risk BCCs comparing MMS vs conventional surgical excision.

Vismodegib Therapy for Basal Cell Carcinoma in an 8-Year-Old Chinese Boy with Xeroderma Pigmentosum.

Vismodegib is an oral inhibitor of the Hedgehog signaling pathway and has been used to treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in adults. This article reports clearance of a nodular BCC of the nasal tip in an 8-year-old boy with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). BCC can pose therapeutic challenges when located in areas that are not amenable to traditional therapies such as Mohs micrographic surgery or topical agents. Vismodegib was used at a dose of 150 mg/day to treat the boy's BCC. After 4 months of therapy, we achieved complete clinical clearance. During 21 months of follow-up, the patient's nose remain

Systematic review of vismodegib toxicity profile in the treatment of advanced basal cell carcinomas compared to other systemic therapies in dermatology.

Vismodegib is a first-in-class, hedgehog-signal inhibitor that is FDA-approved for use with advanced basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) that cannot be removed by either surgical resection or treated with radiation. Release of the drug was fast-tracked because of need for this type of drug, and its overall efficacy in clinical trial by producing either regression or even resolution of advanced BCCs. Compared to placebo, patients using vismodegib have arrested BCC progression, reduced size of BCC, and decreased recurrence of BCC. Unfortunately, vismodegib has notable adverse effects (especially those

Solitary papule over scalp.

Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma (FSCH) is a rare cutaneous hamartoma characterized by follicular, sebaceous, and mesenchymal elements. Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma is probably not as rare as previously thought and its inclusion in the differential diagnosis of asymptomatic skin colored papules or nodules is warranted, especially if it is present in the head and neck region.

[An unusual case of primary hyperparathyroidism in a woman with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome].

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) has been known to coincide with different forms of other neoplasias; however, parathyroid adenoma in this syndrome has not previously been described. The authors report a case of such association in a 50-year old white woman. The adenoma was verified before operation by biochemical, isotopic and cytologic methods and later, after the excision of adenoma, histologically.

Mohs surgery of basal cell carcinoma--a critical review.

Mohs surgery for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the skin attempts to ensure complete tumour removal by histological examination of the entire excision margin and further excision of involved sites. Advocates recommend its use in recurrent or incompletely excised tumours, poorly defined, histologically aggressive or large primary tumours and BCCs situated at high risk or cosmetically important sites. The claimed advantages over other surgical therapies are that it provides a better chance of cure and since less normal tissue is removed the simpler surgical repair ensures a superior cosmetic resu

Fibroepithelioma of Pinkus on the Plantar Foot: A Rare Case.

Fibroepithelioma of Pinkus (FEP) is an uncommon histologic variant of basal cell carcinoma that classically arises on the trunk and proximal extremities. We present the case of a 59-year-old Hispanic man with a 15-year history of a slowly enlarging, intermittently painful nodule on the left plantar foot. Clinical examination revealed a pearly, telangiectatic, hyperkeratotic nodule, and biopsy demonstrated anastomosing cords of basaloid cells within a fibromyxoid stroma, consistent with FEP. This case highlights an atypical acral presentation of FEP and contributes to the limited literature doc

Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) in the Treatment of Basal Cell Carcinoma: A review.

Surgery remains the primary treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer including basal cell carcinoma, though laser therapy has emerged as an alternative or adjunctive option. This review aims to evaluate the available literature on the use of pulsed dye laser (PDL), for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma, focusing on complete response, patients’ satisfaction, side effects, study designs, treatment parameters, recurrence rates, and side effects. This review was conducted to evaluate the use of pulsed dye laser (PDL) therapy in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A comprehensive literat
