Comparison of Three Procedures for Cytochemical Detection of Leukocyte Alkaline Phosphatase Activity in Dogs With Leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in cytologic smears is used as a phenotyping tool for hematopoietic and solid tissue neoplasms in dogs. Different procedures that vary in substrate-dye combinations, fixative, incubation times, and nuclear counterstains are available for detection of ALP activity. It is unknown if these procedures provide comparable results for phenotyping tumors in the same animal. OBJECTIVE: To compare results obtained with three ALP cytochemical procedures in blasts in blood and tissue aspirate smears from dogs with previously diagnosed leukemia

Fat-containing lesions of the retroperitoneum: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Retroperitoneal lesions represent a broad, diverse collection of entities; when they contain fat, the differential diagnosis, which ranges from benign to fully malignant lesions, substantially narrows. Lipomas rarely occur in the retroperitoneum; thus, fat-containing lesions in this location should never be dismissed as lipoma. Pelvic lipomatosis is the overgrowth of histologically normal fat in the extraabdominal compartments of the pelvis along the perirectal and perivesicular spaces. Infants and young children develop lipoblastomas rather than liposarcomas, which occur in older patients. Li

The risk of developing second cancers among survivors of childhood soft tissue sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that children who are treated for soft tissue sarcoma (STS) are at increased risk for developing second cancers. However, the risk for specific cancer sites and variations in risk by treatment and STS histology remain unclear. METHODS: The study evaluated 1499 children (age < 18 years) who survived for > or = 1 year after they were diagnosed with STS and who were reported to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) population-based cancer registries from 1973 to 2000. RESULTS: Twenty-seven children developed 28 subsequent primary malignan

Intraosseous Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Maxilla: A Report of an Unusual Case.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal fibroblastic neoplasm initially described in the pleura and subsequently reported in other anatomical sites, primarily affecting the extremities and deep soft tissues. It is driven by the NAB2::STAT6 fusion and presents with nonspecific clinical features, necessitating thorough histopathological evaluation and the use of an immunohistochemical panel for diagnosis. SFT is extremely rare in the maxillofacial region and even more uncommon when involving bone. This case report describes a 31-year-old male who presented with a slow-growing, progressive,

B-cell receptor signaling and microenvironment crosstalk in mantle cell lymphoma.

Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) is a B-cell neoplasm with a high incidence of relapse, even after the introduction of novel targeted therapies. MCL cells develop in specialized tissue microenvironments such as bone marrow and secondary lymphoid organs, where the pathological cells interact with several microenvironmental components through a complex network of soluble factors and adhesion molecules. This dynamic and complex system, including the activation of B-cell receptor signaling (BCR), promotes survival, immune evasion, and therapeutic resistance. Given the central role of the BCR signaling p

Myeloid Sarcoma: A Primer for Radiologists.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare extramedullary neoplasm that can present in association with acute myeloid leukemia, most commonly in children younger than 15 years. This unique extramedullary malignancy may involve a variety of different organ systems and can present following, preceding, simultaneous with, or in insolation to acute myeloid leukemia. Common areas of extramedullary involvement include soft tissues, bones, lymph nodes, and the peritoneum. Imaging plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management of MS, with commonly used modalities including positron emission tomography-comp

Waldenström macroglobulinemia: clinical and immunological aspects, natural history, cell of origin, and emerging mouse models.

Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is a rare and currently incurable neoplasm of IgM-expressing B-lymphocytes that is characterized by the occurrence of a monoclonal IgM (mIgM) paraprotein in blood serum and the infiltration of the hematopoietic bone marrow with malignant lymphoplasmacytic cells. The symptoms of patients with WM can be attributed to the extent and tissue sites of tumor cell infiltration and the magnitude and immunological specificity of the paraprotein. WM presents fascinating clues on neoplastic B-cell development, including the recent discovery of a specific gain-of-function

Sacral stress fracture in a professional hockey player: a case report.

Lumbosacral pain is common in the general population and among athletes. Many athletes are diagnosed with low back strain and treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, rest, and muscle relaxers. However, the differential for low back pain in athletes is broad and includes many potential etiologies such as: lumbar disk disease, facet arthropathy, spondylolysis, sacroiliitis, tendinopathies, ligament sprains, hip pathology, bursitis, intraabdominal processes, and neoplasm. Sacral stress fractures are included among the many possibilities. Stress fractures are rare in the general population,

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors: Clinicopathologic, Immunohistochemical and Molecular Analysis of 22 Cases Expanding their Morphologic and Immunophenotypic Spectrum.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis that has been linked to tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) since 1959. The neoplastic cells produce increased amount of FGF23 which results in TIO via uncontrolled renal loss of phosphate (phosphaturia), and consequently diminished bone mineralization. To date, ∼300 cases have been reported. Although there is increasing evidence that PMT can be diagnosed by reproducible histopathologic features, firm diagnosis has been often restricted to cases associated with TIO and, hence, diagnosis of "nonphosphaturic variants"

Bilateral jaw involvement of Burkitt's lymphoma in a 5-year-old: Rare pediatric case with review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a rapidly progressing tumor that requires urgent diagnosis and treatment. It is the first human neoplasm linked to a viral cause and is classified into three subtypes: sporadic, endemic, and immunodeficiency-associated. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of a 5-year-old boy who presented to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department with a two-month history of bilateral maxillary swelling and pain. He had no significant medical history. An incisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma. The patient underwent chemo

Disseminated rhinosporidiosis masquerading as soft tissue round cell tumour diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology.

Rhinosporidium seeberi belongs to the eukaryotic class Mesomycetozoea and causes chronic granulomatous lesions known as rhinosporidiosis. Rhinosporidiosis frequently involves the nasal cavity and nasopharynx through transepithelial invasion. Atypical presentations of this disease at other body sites have been reported, including the subcutis, visceral organs, bones, and genitals. Only a few cases of cutaneous and subcutaneous involvement have been reported to date. This chronic granulomatous condition is known for its recurrence following autoinoculation unless the correct diagnosis and approp

Dyserythropoiesis in the diagnosis of the myelodysplastic syndromes and other myeloid neoplasms: problem areas.

An evaluation of the significance of specified dyserythropoietic features in suspected myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia with erythroid dysplasia was made by means of evaluation of 100 electronic images of bone marrow erythroblasts from each of 20 subjects: 11 with a myeloid neoplasm, six with another condition that could cause erythroid dysplasia and three healthy controls. The evaluation was carried out independently by seven experienced haematologists/haematopathologists who were blinded to the diagnosis. The majority of the dyserythropoietic features listed in the

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the larynx: a case report of subglottic localization.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare neoplasm of plasma cells, described in soft tissue outside the bone marrow. EMP of the larynx represents 0.04 to 0.45% of malignant tumors of the larynx. A male of 57 years old presented with hoarseness, dyspnea, and biphasic stridor of 2 months. The indirect laryngoscopy (IL) revealed severe edema of the posterior commissure and a polypoid mass in the right posterior lateral subglottic wall. A biopsy of the subglottic mass was performed by a direct laryngoscopy (DL). The histopathologic diagnosis was EMP CD138+, therefore radiotherapy was given at 5

Parapharyngeal branchial cleft cyst extending to the skull base: a lateral transzygomatic-transtemporal approach to the parapharyngeal space.

Second branchial cleft cysts (BCCs) can occur anywhere from the tonsillar fossa to the supraclavicular area. Second BCCs usually lie on the great vessels of the neck, deep in the sternocleoidomastoid muscle or along its anterior border at the mandibular angle. Parapharyngeal second BCCs are an uncommon neoplasm and rarely extend to the skull base. We report the case of a 45-year-old male with symptoms of conductive hearing loss. Temporal bone CT scan showed effusion in the left middle ear cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a cystic mass that was located at the left parapharyngea

Neurologic complications of systemic lymphoma.

Lymphoma denotes a heterogeneous group of neoplasms derived from lymphoreticular tissues. It can cause neurologic symptoms by infiltrating into the meninges or brain parenchyma. Alternatively, lymphomas may metastasize to bone or infiltrate into the epidural space via intervertebral foramina to cause neurologic dysfunction by compressing adjacent CNS structures. These direct effects can occur at any time during the disease process; most distressingly, meningeal infiltration may be the initial site of relapse after a complete remission. Diffuse and more undifferentiated lymphomas are much more

Intramuscular mesenchymal chondrosarcoma surrounded by a split fat sign mimicking a benign lesion.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) is an aggressive malignant mesenchymal tumour of uncertain differentiation. This is rare, accounting for 2%-4% of chondrosarcomas. Its peak incidence is in the second and third decades, though it can occur at any age. These tumours show a widespread distribution, mainly in bone, but with approximately 40% affecting somatic soft tissue. We present a case of MCS arising within the soleus muscle. The lesion was surrounded by a split-fat sign/fatty rind which is a typical feature of peripheral nerve sheath tumours or other benign intramuscular tumours. However, per

Progressive bone pain caused by a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor in the left femur: a case report and literature review.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are extremely rare mesenchymal tumors of soft tissue and bone that cause tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO). Some of these tumors are completely asymptomatic and may grow undetected unless they become large enough to cause pain or discomfort. This type of tumor is crucial to diagnose in patients being treated for phosphate metabolism disorders and are a rare reason why patients seek medical help owing to pain. Here, we report the details of a patient with progressive bone pain caused by a PMT originating in the left femur.
