UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS/OBJECT: Oral nimodipine is recommended to reduce poor outcome related to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). In addition, animal experiments and clinical trails revealed a beneficial effect of enteral and parenteral nimodipine for the regeneration of cranial nerves following skull base, laryngeal, and maxillofacial surgery. Despite these findings there is a lack of pharmacokinetic data in the literature, especially concerning its distribution in nerve tissue.
PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: Samples were taken from a consecutive series of 57 patients …

BACKGROUND: The sciatic functional index has long been the standard method of assessing motor recovery in the rat sciatic nerve model. The relative subjective nature of the assessment has led to development of newer methods, including video gait analysis and quantitative measurement of isometric tetanic muscle force.
METHODS: Forty male Lewis rats, each with a 10-mm segmental defect in the sciatic nerve, were divided randomly into two groups: rats in group I underwent repair with reversed autograft, and those in group II received a collagen conduit. Video gait analyses were performed at 0, 4,

The regeneration of the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) requires changes of the nonpromising environment. Applying peripheral nerve grafts and their extracts are both the useful method to induce regeneration of injured CNS neurites. Our previous reports showed that degeneration of peripheral nerves enhanced their neurotrophic activity in a time-dependent manner. Electrophoretical analysis of proteins obtained from degenerating sciatic nerves revealed significant changes in fractions of low molecular mass. The aim of the present work was to examine the influence of fractionated ext

The development of self-healing conductive hydrogels is critical in electroactive nerve tissue engineering. Typical conductive materials such as polypyrrole (PPy) are commonly used to fabricate artificial nerve conduits. Moreover, the field of tissue engineering has advanced toward the use of products such as hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels. Although HA-modified PPy films are prepared for various biological applications, the cell-matrix interaction mechanisms remain poorly understood; furthermore, there are no reports on HA-modified PPy-injectable self-healing hydrogels for peripheral nerve rep…

Male erectile dysfunction (ED) caused by cavernous nerve injury is a common complication of pelvic surgery, radiotherapy, transurethral surgery or other operations. However, clinical treatment for iatrogenic or traumatic male ED is difficult and not satisfactory. Many studies have shown that curcumin can promote the repair and regeneration of peripheral nerves; however, whether curcumin can rescue cavernous nerve injury is unknown, and the poor bioavailability of curcumin limits its application in vivo. Hence, the study was conducted. A curved slow-release membrane was produced, and the proper

Lipofibromatous hamartoma is a rare tumour-like condition involving the peripheral nerves, particularly the median nerve. It commonly affects the volar aspect of the hands, wrists and forearms of young adults. Most patients present either early with macrodactyly or later with a forearm mass lesion or symptoms consistent with compressive neuropathy of the involved nerve. The clinical and histomorphological findings of five patients with lipofibromatous hamartoma of the median nerve are analysed. The presentation, pathological features and differential diagnosis of neural lipofibromas are discus

We have previously demonstrated that the failure of the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) to regenerate following axonal injury is related to its immunosuppressive nature, which restricts the ability of both recruited blood-borne monocytes and CNS-resident microglia to support a process of repair. In this study we show that transected optic nerve transplanted with macrophages stimulated by spontaneously regenerating nerve tissue, e.g., segments of peripheral nerve (sciatic nerve), exhibit axonal regrowth at least as far as the optic chiasma. Axonal regrowth was confirmed by double retrogr…

The rat sciatic nerve regeneration chamber was used to study the spatial and temporal response of the endoneurial vasculature during regeneration. Proximal and distal stumps of a transected rat sciatic nerve were placed in opposite ends of a silicone tube and allowed to regenerate for periods of 2, 3, 4 or 52 weeks after the surgery. Serial, transverse sections of nerve were studied at each time-point to quantitate the number of vessels, capillary density and the vessel luminal perimeter per nerve area. The results indicate that the vascular growth relative to the existing tissue in the chambe

Entrapment neuropathies in the upper extremity are common. Spontaneous paralysis of the posterior intersosseous nerve may occur by compression at the arcade of Frohse, where the nerve enters the plane between the superficial and deep muscle bellies of the supinator. Benign soft tissue tumors, minor trauma, and local inflammation have led to paralysis of the posterior interosseous nerve in several cases. An additional report on paralysis of this nerve a few days after overexertion with later spontaneous recovery is presented.

Bioactive macromolecular drugs known as Growth Factors (GFs), approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), have found successful application in clinical practice. They hold significant promise for addressing peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs). Peripheral nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) loaded with GFs, in the context of tissue engineering, can ensure sustained and efficient release of these bioactive compounds. This, in turn, maintains a stable, long-term, and effective GF concentration essential for treating damaged peripheral nerves. Peripheral nerve regeneration is a complex process tha

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive assessment of the time course of functional recovery following peripheral nerve repair is critical for surgical management of peripheral nerve injuries. This study describes the design and implementation of a novel implantable wireless nerve stimulator capable of repeatedly interfacing peripheral nerve tissue and providing serial evaluation of functional recovery postoperatively.
METHODS: Thin-film wireless implants were fabricated and subcutaneously implanted into Lewis rats. Wireless implants were used to serially stimulate rat sciatic nerve and assess functional…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize recent advances in facial nerve repair and facial reanimation as it relates to neurorrhaphy techniques, bioengineered options and nerve transfers.
RECENT FINDINGS: Direct neurorrhaphy is the gold standard for facial nerve repair when tension-free repair is achievable. Interposition grafting with autologous donor nerves facilitates repair when a tension-free repair is not feasible. Adjunctive bioengineered materials have been developed to enhance nerve repair, but high-quality clinical evidence supporting their use in facial nerve r

The appropriate projection of axons within the nervous system is a crucial component of the establishment of neural circuitry. Draxin is a repulsive axon guidance protein. Draxin has important functions in the guidance of three commissures in the central nervous system and in the migration of neural crest cells and dI3 interneurons in the chick spinal cord. Here, we report that the distribution of the draxin protein and the location of 23C10-positive areas have a strong temporal and spatial correlation. The overexpression of draxin, especially transmembrane draxin, caused 23C10-positive axon b

The recent molecular cloning of BDNF and CNTF based on traditional protein purification and protein sequencing and the identification and cloning of NT-3 and NT-4 by homology cloning strategies has led to a tremendous flurry of interest in the biology of these proteins and initiation of studies to assess their potential utility in neurological disorders ranging through degenerative disease, stroke and ischemia, trauma and peripheral neuropathies. Tissue culture studies have been very useful in identifying neuronal specificities of the neurotrophins and CNTF and in combination with localization

Nerve regeneration through predegenerated (PNG) or fresh (FNG) autografts in either fresh or delayed recipient nerve beds were studied in the rat sciatic nerve. Grafts 10 mm in length were excised either immediately or following a 7-day period of predegeneration. They were sutured into gaps on the contralateral side which were either freshly made or had been made 7 days previously. The early recovery (10 days at 2-day intervals) was evaluated by the sensory pinch test to measure the rate of regeneration and the delay period. The PNG group had an improvement in axonal regeneration as evidenced
