Memory encoding, during naturalistic narrative-experiences, engages distributed brain networks that extend beyond commonly reported brain regions of interest (ROIs). Although, several recent studies have reported the role of white-matter (WM) and cerebellum in memory recall, most studies overlook noncanonical regions outside the traditional default mode network comprising of hippocampal-medial temporal lobe system. In this paper, for establishing memory related networks, we suggest the involvement of entire brain with memory recall. For this purpose, brain ROIs are identified through a Graph A

Male zebra finches produce a sequence-invariant set of syllables, separated by short inspiratory gaps. These songs are learned from an adult tutor and maintained throughout life, making them a tractable model system for learned, sequentially ordered behaviors, particularly speech production. Moreover, much is known about the cortical, thalamic, and brain stem areas involved in producing this behavior, with the premotor cortical nucleus HVC (proper name) being of primary importance. In a previous study, our group developed a behavioral neural network model for birdsong constrained by the struct

We can learn from the wisdom of others to maximize success. However, it is unclear how humans take advice to flexibly adapt behavior. On the basis of data from neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuroimaging, a biologically plausible model is developed to illustrate the neural mechanisms of learning from instructions. The model consists of two complementary learning pathways. The slow-learning parietal pathway carries out simple or habitual stimulus-response (S-R) mappings, whereas the fast-learning hippocampal pathway implements novel S-R rules. Specifically, the hippocampus can rapidly encod

The cerebellum regulates execution of skilled movements through neural connections with the primary motor cortex. A main projection from the cerebellum to the primary motor cortex is a disynaptic excitatory pathway relayed at the ventral thalamus. This dentatothalamocortical pathway receives inhibitory inputs from Purkinje cells of the cerebellar cortex. These pathways (cerebellothalamocortical pathways) have been characterized extensively using cellular approaches in animals. Advances in non-invasive transcranial activation of neural structures using electrical and magnetic stimulation have a

In this study, vestibular caloric stimulation (CS) inhibited noradrenergic (NA) neurons of the locus coeruleus (LC) in rats. The vestibular input can be modified by the ventrolateral medulla (VLM), which then inhibits the LC neuronal activity via GABAA receptors. Clinically, CS induces vertigo in humans. Thus, LC-NA inhibition may be involved in the development of vertigo. Moreover, it is speculated that Sopite syndrome, one of the major symptom complexes of motion sickness, is also evoked by LC-NA inhibition. The central LC-NA neuronal system may participate in vertigo and motion sickness ind

Organisms control their visual worlds by moving their eyes, heads, and bodies. This control of "gaze" or "looking" is key to survival and in … behaviors are learned rather than hardcoded. Despite this flexibility, there are broadly enumerable neural pathways commonly adopted among primate gaze systems. Parallel pathways which carry simultaneous evolutionary and homeostatic drives converge in superior colliculus, a layered midbrain structure which integrates and relays these volitional signals to brainst …

Zika virus (ZIKV) is causally associated with serious neurological complications such as microcephaly. The underlying mechanism is still not clear. Here, mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) were used to explore the role of ZIKV capsid protein in two neural differentiation models. Both immature anchor capsid and mature capsid proteins do not affect the pluripotency and cell cycle of mESCs, barely impair the ability of spontaneous embryoid body to differentiate into three germ layers, but significantly compromise the neural differentiation. In transcriptomic analysis, genes associated with axon g

Locomotor function, mediated by lumbar neural circuitry, is modulated by descending spinal pathways. Spinal cord injury (SCI) interrupts descending projections and denervates lumbar motor neurons (MNs). We previously reported that retrogradely transported neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) to lumbar MNs attenuated SCI-induced lumbar MN dendritic atrophy and enabled functional recovery after a rostral thoracic contusion. Here we functionally dissected the role of descending neural pathways in response to NT-3-mediated recovery after a T9 contusive SCI in mice. We find that residual projections to lumbar MNs…

The neural crest (NC) is a transient multipotent cell population that originates in the dorsal neural tube. Cells of the NC are highly migratory, as they travel considerable distances through the body to reach their final sites. Derivatives of the NC are neurons and glia of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and the enteric nervous system as well as non-neural cells. Different signaling pathways triggered by Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs), Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGFs), Wnt proteins, Notch ligands, retinoic acid (RA), and Receptor Tyrosine Kinases (RTKs) participate in the processes of

The mammalian skull vault is a highly regulated structure that evolutionally protects brain growth during vertebrate development. It consists of several membrane bones with different tissue origins (e.g. neural crest-derived frontal bone and mesoderm-derived parietal bone). Although membrane bones are formed through intramembranous ossification, the neural crest-derived frontal bone has superior capabilities for osteoblast activities and bone regeneration via TGF, BMP, Wnt, and FGF signaling pathways. Neural crest (NC) cells are multipotent, and once induced, will follow specific paths to migr

Auditory cortex (AC) is necessary for the detection of brief gaps in ongoing sounds, but not for the detection of longer gaps or other stimuli such as tones or noise. It remains unclear why this is so, and what is special about brief gaps in particular. Here, we used both optogenetic suppression and conventional lesions to show that the cortical dependence of brief gap detection hinges specifically on gap termination. We then identified a cortico-collicular gap detection circuit that amplifies cortical gap termination responses before projecting to inferior colliculus (IC) to impact behavior.

Previous studies have reported that intrahemispheric connections between area 17 (V1, striate cortex) and other cortical visual areas are not point-to-point, but instead have some degree of convergence and divergence. Many pathological conditions can interfere with the normal development of patterns of cortico-cortical connections, but there is little information regarding whether or not early pathological insults can also induce permanent changes in the convergence and divergence of cortical connections. Obtaining this information is important because loss of precision in neural projections c

Responses of afferent unit to sympathetic stimulation (SS), intravenous injection of noradrenaline (NA) and phentolamine in the caudal nerve of diabetic rats were investigated. The results showed that the discharge frequencies of C and Adelta units with spontaneous discharges were increased in diabetic hyperalgesic rats after SS, and these spontaneous discharges were eliminated by adrenergic antagonist. The C (6/21) and Adelta (19/81) units with no spontaneous discharges of diabetic hyperalgesic rat turned from silent state into active state during SS; although SS did not elicit afferent disch

The hypothesis that acutely administered ethanol could interfere with neocortical recurrent inhibition (RI) was supported. The large surface negative wave in response to antidromic stimulation of the cerebral peduncle represents a summation of inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, a measure of RI. In acute experiments on adult rats, blood alcohol levels of less than about 120 mg/100 ml slightly facilitated the surface negative wave. Higher blood alcohol levels always blocked the surface negative response. Stimulation of the somatosensory thalamic relay nuclei produced a cortical response on whic

At the present time, complete agreement on the origin and course of parasympathetic preganglionic fibers to the alimentary canal has not been reached. The purpose of this study was to trace vagal fibers to the abdominal cavity and to follow the distribution of these fibers to the digestive tube. The technique used was to label neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMX) with 3H-leucine and then to follow the orthograde transport. 16 albino rats were used in this experiment. The right DMX in one group of rats and the left DMX in the other group was injected with 25 microCi of 3H-leuc

The dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) has been recognized as a key cortical area for nociceptive modulation. However, the underlying neural pathway and the function of specific cell types remain largely unclear. Here, we show that lesions in the dmPFC induced an algesic and anxious state. Using multiple tracing methods including a rabies-based transsynaptic tracing method, we outlined an excitatory descending neural pathway from the dmPFC to the ventrolateral periaqueductal gray (vlPAG). Specific activation of the dmPFC/vlPAG neural pathway by optogenetic manipulation produced analgesic

OBJECTIVES: The functions of the lower urinary tract (LUT) to store and periodically release urine are dependent on neural circuits in the brain and spinal cord. This paper reviews the central neural control of micturition and how disruption of this control can lead to bladder overactivity and incontinence.
METHODS: Neuroanatomic, electrophysiologic, and pharmacologic techniques have provided information about the neural circuitry and the neurotransmitters involved in the central nervous control of voiding. Experimental models of neural injury, including spinal cord transection, cerebral infa

BACKGROUND: Seven female individuals with multiple congenital anomalies, developmental delay and/or intellectual disability have been found to have a genetic variant of uncertain significance in the mediator complex subunit 12 gene (MED12 c.3412C>T, p.Arg1138Trp). The functional consequence of this genetic variant in disease is undetermined, and insight into disease mechanism is required.
METHODS: We identified a de novo MED12 p.Arg1138Trp variant in a female patient and compared disease phenotypes with six female individuals identified in the literature. To investigate affected biological pa

Synaptic activities of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) can modulate or appropriate the respiratory motor activities in the context of behavior and emotion via descending projections to nucleus retroambiguus. However, alternative anatomical pathways for the mediation of PAG-evoked respiratory modulation via core nuclei of the brainstem respiratory network remains only partially described. We injected the retrograde tracer Cholera toxin subunit B (CT-B) in the pontine Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KFn, n = 5), medullary Bötzinger (BötC, n = 3) and pre-Bötzinger complexes (pre-BötC; n = 3), and the caudal

The location, number and size of the central and peripheral neurons innervating the ischiocavernous muscle (ICM) were studied in male pigs by means of Fast Blue (FB) retrograde neuronal tracing. Moreover the immunohistochemical properties of the sympathetic ganglia were investigated combining the double immunolabeling method. After injection of FB into the left ICM, a mean number of 245.3 ± 134.9 labeled neurons were found in the ipsilateral ventral horn of the S1-S3 segments of the spinal cord (SC), 129.7 ± 45.5 in the L6-S3 ipsilateral and S2-S3 contralateral spinal ganglia (SGs), 2279.3 ± 6
