The authors present a case of linear nevus sebaceous syndrome (LNSS) with atrophy of bilateral frontotemporal areas of the brain, left cerebellum and hippocampus, and bilateral uncal dysplasia demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Magnetic resonance angiography revealed bilateral internal carotid artery hypoplasia with absence of flow in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Tc-99m HMPAO brain SPECT demonstrated more areas of perfusion defects while MRI detected volume loss and gliosis in affected areas. Tc-99m HMPAO brain SPECT may be more useful for revealing absent or decre

Phacomatosis pigmentokeratotica is a rare but highly characteristic disease defined by the occurrence of an organoid naevus with sebaceous differentiation, a speckled-lentiginous naevus and other associated anomalies. It is probably caused by the twin-spot phenomenon. We report on a 23-year-old male electrician with 10 irregularly shaped, sharply demarcated, brownish-yellow papillomatous plaques following Blaschko's lines, as well as 6 large, sharply demarcated, round to oval, slightly greyish macules with pewit-egg-like dots, involving both buttocks, the right thigh, the right knee, the right

UNLABELLED: Capillary malformations (CM) are slow-flow vascular abnormalities present at birth and predominantly manifest as cutaneous lesions. In the rare neurocutaneous disorder known as Sturge Weber Syndrome (SWS), individuals exhibit CM not only on the skin but also within the leptomeninges of the brain and the choroid of the eye. >90% of CM are caused by a somatic R183Q mutation in GNAQ, the gene encoding Gαq - a heterotrimeric G-protein subunit. The somatic GNAQ mutation is notably enriched in endothelial cells (ECs) isolated from CM-affected regions. Here we show blood vessels in cutane

We present the case of a boy born with a large macular, segmental vascular anomaly over the left face, initially diagnosed as a capillary malformation (port-wine stain) by the postnatal paediatric team. The vascular anomaly in the face then grew rapidly during the first few weeks of life and started to occlude the left eye, causing parental concerns about the infant's vision. A dermatological opinion established that the lesion was a segmental infantile haemangioma (IH). This, in combination with the posterior fossa malformation previously detected on antenatal scanning and confirmed by an MRI

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the patterns of visual field (VF) defects in patients with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) and phakomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) using standard automated perimetry.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical and VF data of patients with SWS or PPV undergoing treatment for glaucoma and had VF test data over a 27-year period. VF defects were classified as glaucomatous, neurological, combined, or unclassifiable. Statistical analyses were performed to determine factors associated with type of field defects.
RESULTS: A total of 86 patients (172 eyes) were incl

AIM: To investigate and analyze the current epidemiological and clinical data for West syndrome (WS) in Korea, including treatments and outcome.
METHODS: Prepared survey forms were sent to hospitals located all over Korea to collect data on cases of WS treated between January 1997 and June 2000. Data from 21 institutes were returned.
RESULTS: Data were collected for 358 children (219 boys and 139 girls) who were diagnosed and treated for WS. The incidences of WS were 112 cases in 1997, 104 cases in 1998, 108 cases in 1999, and 34 cases in the first half of 2000. Based on these figures, the p

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL) is a rare neurocutaneous multisystem disorder affecting ectodermal and mesodermal tissues, including the eyes, skin, adipose tissue and the brain. It is hypothesised to be a neural crest disorder. While ECCL presents with various neurological features, the occurrence of brain tumour is an extremely rare association. Here, we report a case of metachronous tumours comprising a dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour (DNET) and a haemorrhagic chiasmal tumour in a patient with ECCL. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case of ECCL

A child had been followed since infancy by our multi-disciplinary neuro-oncology clinic with annual magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) under the presumed diagnosis of encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis (ECCL), with clinical features including nevus psiloliparus, scalp lipoma, nodular skin tag on and coloboma of the eyelid, cortical atrophy and meningeal angiomatosis. At the age of 4, she was found to have a large temporoparietal lesion causing elevated intracranial pressure requiring surgical resection. Histopathological exam of the tumor was suggestive of an intracranial sarcoma. Sequencing a

BACKGROUND: Patients with giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN) have increased risk of neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM). Brain MRI is mandatory in GCMN.
OBJECTIVES: To present the age related changes in brain MRI in children with NCM during several-year follow-up.
METHODS: In 7 NCM children following data were analyzed: main nevus localization, surgical treatment phase, histology of excised nevi, time of NCM diagnosis, number of MRI studies, neurological symptoms, changes of melanin deposits in brain during follow-up.
RESULTS: Four children had bathing trunk nevus, two main nevus on back,

BACKGROUND: Treatment of giant melanocytic nevi (GMN) remains a multidisciplinary challenge. We present analysis of diagnostics, treatment, and follow- up in children with GMN to establish obligatory procedures in these patients.
MATERIAL/METHODS: In 24 children with GMN, we analyzed: localization, main nevus diameter, satellite nevi, brain MRI, catecholamines concentrations in 24-h urine collection, surgery stages number, and histological examinations. The t test was used to compare catecholamines concentrations in patient subgroups.
RESULTS: Nine children had "bathing trunk" nevus, 7 had m

We report 2 cases of unilateral retinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) with previously unreported anomalies of the inner retinal layers detected on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT): a 5-year-old girl with a large unilateral retinal AVM, ipsilateral visual acuity of 20/200, and ipsilateral intracranial AVM; and a 10-year-old boy with a large unilateral retinal AVM, ipsilateral visual acuity of 20/20, ipsilateral temporal visual field defects, and no intracranial AVM. Both macular SD-OCT findings showed multiple large inner retinal vessels that created a prominent shadowin

The mechanisms behind malignant progression in patients with giant nevi are largely unknown. Here, we aim to describe novel genetic findings and explain possible mechanisms resulting in the most severe form of neurocutaneous melanocytosis. Detailed histological (biopsy and post-mortem) studies, tissue culture, and high-resolution cytogenetic analysis, including chromosome and array comparative genomic hybridization, Ion AmpliSeq Cancer Panel, and Sanger sequencing, were performed on tissues from a white male who succumbed at 17 months of age to congenital melanoma associated with a bathing-tru

Rhombencephalosynapsis (RES) is a rare hindbrain malformation that could occur in isolation or as a part of a syndrome for example, Gómez-López-Hernández syndrome (GLH) or VACTERL-H. We identified male patient with severe RES. Ventriculomegaly, agenesis of septum pellucidum, very thin corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst were additional neuroimaging findings. He had brachyturricephaly, midface retrusion, low-set posteriorly rotated ears and bilateral parietal well circumscribed areas of alopecia. No corneal anesthesia was observed; thus, demonstrating many of the diagnostic criteria of G

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral and cervical arterial abnormalities are the most common non-cutaneous anomaly in PHACE syndrome, but the location and type of arterial lesions that occur have not been systematically assessed in a large cohort. Our aim was to characterize the phenotypic spectrum of arteriopathy, assess the frequency with which different arteries are involved, and evaluate spatial relationships between arteriopathy, brain structural lesions, and hemangiomas in PHACE syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intracranial MRA and/or CTA images from 70 children and accompanying brain MR im

The cause of PHACE syndrome is unknown. In a study of 218 patients, we examined potential prenatal risk factors for PHACE syndrome. Rates of pre-eclampsia and placenta previa in affected individuals were significantly greater than in the general population. No significant risk factor differences were detected between male and female subjects.

Dear Editor, Although some of my colleagues may find this surprising, as a neurologist, I have noticed many connections between dermatology and neurology. Neurological and dermatological signs and symptoms are common in many clinical entities, especially in the so-called phakomatoses or neurocutaneous syndromes (Von Recklinghausen's disease type 1 and 2, Bourneville-Pringle syndrome, Sturge-Weber syndrome, Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, Louis-Bar syndrome) (1). The terms "neurodermatitis" and "neurodermatology" also confirm the above. Inspection is the basis of every clinical examination and an i…
