Behavioural observations and neurophysiological responses of cockroaches envenomated with Latrodectus katipo venom.

1. The behaviour of American cockroaches envenomated with Latrodectus katipo venom was correlated with neurophysiological events recorded from an isolated cockroach CNS preparation to which venom was applied. 2. The injection of a venom extract into cockroaches caused convulsions (3 behavioural categories: quivering, jerking and hyperextension) which eventually led to paralysis and death. 3. Changes in the spontaneous activity of nerve 5 (from the metathoracic ganglion) corresponded to the time course of envenomation behaviours. An initial increase in discharge peaked 5-10 min after applicatio

Clinical neurophysiological examination of deafness associated with juvenile motor neurone disease.

Three patients with the syndrome of progressive severe deafness, associated with juvenile onset of motor neurone disease, were examined using conventional audiometry and brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) recordings, and electrocochleographic recordings were made in two of them. Findings indicate that the deafness had resulted from loss of acoustic nerve fibers and/or sensory cells of the spiral ganglion.

[Total right hemispherectomy: neurophysiological study after twenty-six years].

Twenty-six years after a total right hemispherectomy for tumor when thirteen years old, a right-handed patient presented with disturbances of equilibrium, urinary incontinence, and a marked reduction in motor impulses, in spite of a subnormal intelligence quotient (0.85). Computed tomography examinations suggested the presence of a normal pressure hydrocephalus. However intracranial pressure monitoring and isotopic and cerebrospinal fluid perfusion tests showed the absence of any cerebral obstruction, and free communication between the cerebral and spinal spaces, though intracranial volume cap

[Neurophysiologic aspects of psychoorganic deficiency problems of depressive disorders of the involutional age].

From a multidimensional viewpoint 40 depressive patients of involutional age (mean age 55 years) were evaluated in terms of an operationally defined deficiency syndrome, i.e. vital reduction per organic brain coloration to establish a neurobiologic matrix of correlation between the level of clinical psychopathology and neurophysiology. A subtle diagnosis by means of evoked potentials (SEP and VEP) measuring the neuronal infrastructure allows for a global evaluation of sensory-specific "cortical-subcortical functional integrity", otherwise missed in terms of the conventional EEG. In both vitall…

[Neurophysiological characteristics of early auditory waves of the brain stem and their clinical utilization].

The auditory brainstem electric response yields information on both the neurological and the audiological status of infants and adults. These early waves have particular properties as: non-habituation, absence of latency modifications between sleep, awake state, or under high doses of barbiturates. We have developed a procedure for extracting each type of information by measuring the latencies of wave I (auditory nerve) and wave V (inferior colliculus), then the speed of conduction between these two waves.

NTSM: Neurophysiology-Guided Tri-Stream Selective State Space Model for Real-Time Driver Fatigue Detection with EEG-EOG Signals.

Driver fatigue is a leading contributor to fatal traffic accidents globally, and Electroencephalogram (EEG)-Electrooculogram (EOG) multi-modal systems are the gold standard for objective fatigue detection. However, existing Transformer-based methods face critical bottlenecks of high quadratic complexity and oversimplified feature fusion that neglects intrinsic brain-eye neurophysiological couplings. To address these issues, this paper proposes NTSM, a neurophysiology-guided tri-stream architecture integrating the Mamba-based selective State Space Model (SSM) with four specialized modules, i.e.…

Management of vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas): the value of neurophysiology for evaluation and prediction of auditory function in 420 cases.

OBJECTIVE: From 1978 to 1993, 1000 vestibular schwannomas were operated on at the Department of Neurosurgery at Nordstadt Hospital. The goal was to improve the chances of hearing preservation by recording auditory brain stem responses (ABRs). ABRs can be used for preoperative classification of cochlear nerve impairment and for prediction of the chances of hearing preservation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In addition to the previously described audiometric testing, the patients underwent perioperative and intraoperative bilateral ABR recording at 100-dB condensation and rarefaction click stimulation

[Central pontine myelinolysis in alcoholism. Clinical aspects, neurophysiology, computerized tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance tomography in a patient who survived].

A case of central pontine myelinolysis in a 38-year-old alcoholic is reported. The findings initially and over a course of almost 2 years, including clinical data, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cranial computerized tomography (CCT), evoked potentials (BAEP, VEP, SEP), EEG and EMG/ENG are presented and discussed in relation to other recent case reports, with special regard to the CCT findings. The important role of CCT is emphasized, although negative CCT findings probably do not allow exclusion of the diagnosis. MRI can be expected to play an important part in the detection of central pont

Visual Information Routes in the Posterior Dorsal and Ventral Face Network Studied with Intracranial Neurophysiology and White Matter Tract Endpoints.

Occipitotemporal regions within the face network process perceptual and socioemotional information, but the dynamics and information flow between different nodes of this network are still debated. Here, we analyzed intracerebral EEG from 11 epileptic patients viewing a stimulus sequence beginning with a neutral face with direct gaze. The gaze could avert or remain direct, while the emotion changed to fearful or happy. N200 field potential peak latencies indicated that face processing begins in inferior occipital cortex and proceeds anteroventrally to fusiform and inferior temporal cortices, in

Intraoperative neurophysiology for surgery in and around the brainstem: role of brainstem mapping and corticobulbar tract motor-evoked potential monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: New advancements of intraoperative neurophysiology for surgery in and around the brainstem have been described. NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL TECHNIQUES: Brainstem mapping (BSM) is applied to locate cranial nerves and their motor nuclei (CMN) on the floor of the fourth ventricle. Corticobulbar tract (CBT) motor-evoked potential (MEP) monitoring is used to achieve on-line monitoring of the cranial motor nerves' functional integrity. DISCUSSION: Each of these procedures bears a specific role: BSM can help avoid direct damage to CMNs on the fourth ventricular floor; CBT-MEP can provide simult…

Coupling of spinal locomotor networks in larval lamprey revealed by receptor blockers for inhibitory amino acids: neurophysiology and computer modeling.

1. Receptor blockers for inhibitory amino acids were applied to part or all of the spinal cord of larval lamprey during brain stem-initiated … the entire spinal cord, stable longitudinal coupling along the spinal cord persisted. This and the neurophysiology results mentioned above suggest that the main mechanism for longitudinal coupling between locomotor networks in adjacent regions of the spinal cord is ipsilateral excitatory connections and not crossed inhibitory connections. This possible organizat …

A survey of the pattern reversal visual evoked response (PRVER) in 1428 consecutive patients referred to a clinical neurophysiology department.

The records of 1428 neurological patients referred to a department of Clinical Neurophysiology for PRVER testing have been reviewed. Half field studies with multichannel recordings were carried out in the majority. 1186 of these patients had a provisional diagnosis of MS; 42% had abnormal PRVERs compared with 25% for those patients who did not have MS. Symmetrical latency increases from stimulation of either eye, interocular latency abnormalities and amplitude abnormalities were as frequent in the non-MS patients as the group with a provisional diagnosis of MS. A small proportion of patients h…
