Transcriptomic profiles of 33 opium poppy samples in different tissues, growth phases, and cultivars.

Opium poppy is one of the most important medicinal plants and remains the only commercial resource of morphinan-based painkillers. However, little is known about the regulatory mechanisms involved in benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) biosynthesis in opium poppy. Herein, the full-length transcriptome dataset of opium poppy was constructed for the first time in accompanied with the 33 samples of Illumina transcriptome data from different tissues, growth phases and cultivars. The long-read sequencing produced 902,140 raw reads with 55,114 high-quality transcripts, and short-read sequencing prod…

Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric characterization of thebaol, an opium constituent, and its structural analogs.

A GC-MS method is described for the characterization of thebaol, a component of opium poppy. The method includes preliminary sample derivatization to TMS, TBDMS, TFA, PFP and HFB substituted products. Fragmentation of resulting derivatives is unique under electron ionization, and proceeds via consecutive loss of two radicals that violate the "even-electron rule". Peaks of [M-2CH3]+. and [M-C4H9-CH3]+. ions show maximum intensities in the spectra of trimethyl- and tert-butyldimethylsilyl-thebaols. Elimination of perfluoroalkyl and methyl radicals from M+. is characteristic for TFA, PFP and HFB …

Opium use during pregnancy and risk of preterm delivery: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Use of narcotic or "recreational" drugs has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm delivery. However, the associations might be confounded by other factors related to high-risk behaviours. This is the first study to investigate the association between traditional opium use during pregnancy and risk of preterm delivery. METHOD AND FINDINGS: We performed a population-based cohort study in the rural areas of the Golestan province, Iran between 2008 and 2010. We randomly selected 920 women who used (usually smoked) opium during pregnancy and 920 women who did …

Opium poppy mosaic virus, a new umbravirus isolated from Papaver somniferum in New Zealand.

A novel virus, tentatively named "opium poppy mosaic virus" (OPMV), was isolated from Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) with leaf mosaic and mottling symptoms in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2006. The virus was mechanically transmitted to herbaceous plants of several species, in which it induced local and/or systemic symptoms. No virus particles were observed by electron microscopy in the diseased P. somniferum or any of the symptomatic herbaceous plants. The complete genomic sequence of 4230 nucleotides contains four open reading frames (ORF) and is most closely related (59.3 %) to tobacco bushy …

AFLP studies on downy-mildew-resistant and downy-mildew-susceptible genotypes of opium poppy.

Downy mildew (DM) caused by Peronospora arborescens, is a serious disease in opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), which has a world-wide spread. The establishment of DM-resistant cultivars appears to be a sustainable way to control the In this paper, we present the results of a study aimed at the identification of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers for DM-resistance in opium poppy. Three opium poppy genotypes (inbred over about 10 years): Pps-1 (DM-resistant), Jawahar-16 (DM-susceptible) and H-9 (DM-susceptible) were crossed in a diallel manner and the F(1) progeny along with t…

The origins and spread of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) revealed by genomics and seed morphometrics.

The opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) is one of the most important plants in human history. It is the main source of opiates used as analgesic medicines or psychotropic drugs, the latter related to addiction problems, illegal trafficking and geopolitical issues. Poppyseed is also used in cooking. The prehistoric origins, domestication and cultivation spread of the opium poppy remain unresolved. Traditionally, Papaver setigerum has been considered the wild ancestor with early cultivation presumed to have occurred in the Western Mediterranean region, where setigerum is autochthonous. Other the…

A critical review of diagnostic strategies for bacterial pathogens in opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) cultivation.

Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) is a pharmaceutically and economically strategic crop in which bacterial diseases cause measurable yield and quality losses. Yet the evidence base for diagnostics in poppy is fragmented, taxonomically inconsistent, and constrained by the crop's narcotic status. This review synthesizes historical records and updates taxonomy for priority taxa-most notably seed-borne Xanthomonas campestris pv. papavericola and soft-rot agents within Pectobacterium spp.-and compares conventional, molecular, immunological, point-of-care, and non-invasive optical/spectral approaches…
