[Psychodynamic aspects of corset treatment in adolescents].

Based on 41 psychoanalytical interviews with 14 adolescent corset patients it was intended to analyse in a pilot study the individual experience, the handling of the corset and the influence of corset therapy on the adolescent development. The indication for proceeding to corset therapy was either due to Scheuermann's disease or scoliotic disease. Contrary to the doctor's instructions all patients examined only wore the corset during certain periods of time according to a time schedule fixed with the parents only, therefore lacking any official authorization. It also happened that the therapy

The orthopedic surgeon and rehabilitation engineering.

Rapid advancements in technology in the past 30 years have brought about a close relationship between medicine and engineering. Part of this has been the close association of orthopedics and the prosthetics and orthotics technologies. In recent years, advances in other aspects of rehabilitation engineering have taken place; these have been partly based on the technology established by research in prosthetics and orthotics. The rapid progress in rehabilitation engineering now demands the attention of orthopedists. The role of the rehabilitation engineer is defined, and some examples are given o

[Results of the treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip by "extentions repositioning" and "Hanausekretention" (author's transl)].

Since 1969 all our patients below the age of three years, suffering from congenital luxation of the hip-joint, were treated conservatively. The "Extensions-reposition" and "Hanausekretention" were just slightly modified in providing the "Lorenzposition" by reducing the abduction. The rate of necrosis of the femoral head (4.3%) did not change significantly. In only one case we did not succeed in repositioning a completely luxated hipjoint conservatively. Children up to the age of 3 years can be treated conservatively by this method.

Pneumatic orthosis for paraplegic patients: functional evaluation and prescription considerations.

Fourteen paraplegic patients were studied during ambulation training, 11 with pneumatic orthoses and with conventional metal orthoses, and 3 with pneumatic orthoses only. The purposes of the study were to establish whether pneumatic orthoses could be used by paraplegic patients for effective ambulation, whether these devices presented any advantages or disadvantages over conventional orthoses and how their use would affect the expected level of rehabilitation and independence. As far as application, standing up, sitting down and ambulation within a rehabilitation center are concerned, similar

To Wean or Not to Wean: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Pavlik Harness Weaning in Infantile Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.

BACKGROUND: After successful treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) with a Pavlik harness, controversy exists about whether it's best to continue harness use for an additional "weaning" period or simply terminate treatment. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to compare radiographic outcomes between patients with stable hip dysplasia who were weaned (W) or not weaned (NW) after Pavlik harness treatment. METHODS: This was a single-center RCT of infants with stable ultrasonographic dysplasia in whom a Pavlik harness was initiated at <3 months of age. After 2

Feasibility of post-stroke hand rehabilitation supported by a soft robotic hand orthosis in-clinic and at-home.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability in the world. Upper limb impairments are common post-stroke, with nearly half of those initially affected continuing to live with long-term functional limitations, impacting their independence and quality of life. Task-specific, intensive therapy has been shown to promote recovery; however, achieving this dose is resource-intensive and logistically challenging. Robotic hand orthoses (RHOs) are a promising approach to support functional rehabilitation regardless of location, thus providing high-dose therapy with minimal additional burden

Assessing Caregiver Experiences Using Hip Spica Casts in Children Treated for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.

BACKGROUND: Current literature lacks comprehensive documentation on the burden placed on patient families managing spica casts for extended periods. Various complications associated with spica casts further intensify these challenges. To address this gap, our study aims to assess the lived experiences of families caring for children undergoing treatment for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) with a hip spica cast. METHODS: A comprehensive survey was designed to gather caregiver perspectives on various orthotic treatments for DDH. The survey consisted of both Likert statements and open-e

Endoscopic treatment of isolated unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis: preoperative craniofacial metrics and ongoing postoperative improvement in craniofacial deformity over time.

OBJECTIVE: There is a paucity of data on the treatment options and long-term outcomes of isolated unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis. The authors aimed to present a 28-year experience treating isolated unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis with endoscopy-assisted strip craniectomy treatment and postoperative cranial orthotic therapy for various age groups, and provide objective craniofacial measurements and long-term outcomes of this approach to help guide management. METHODS: A retrospective review of all children with craniosynostosis treated endoscopically for isolated lambdoid involvemen

Research Toward Understanding the Benefits and Limitations of Orthotic Use To Improve Mobility and Balance for Individuals With Neuropathic Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Walking is a vital activity often compromised in individuals with neuropathic conditions. Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and Cerebral Palsy (CP) are two common neurodevelopmental disabilities affecting gait, predisposing to the risk of falls. With guiding scientific evidence limited, there is a critical need to better understand how surgical correction affects mobility, balance confidence, and gait compared to ankle foot orthosis (AFO) bracing. A systematic approach will enable rigorous collaborative research to advance clinical care. METHODS: Key elements of this vision includ

Biomechanical evaluation of 3D-printed joint-type orthosis for hallux valgus.

BACKGROUND: Orthoses play an important role in the conservative treatment of hallux valgus (HV) with different therapeutic effects. In this study, a new HV orthosis was developed using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. In addition, its kinematic effect was evaluated using motion analysis. METHODS: Seventeen participants with an HV angle of >20° were included in the study. The first metatarsophalangeal abduction angle before and after the orthosis was measured statically. Subsequently, dynamic first metatarsophalangeal abduction, dorsiflexion angle and ground reaction force with and

The Role of Orthoses in Chronic Axial Spinal Conditions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bracing represents a prevalent conservative, non-surgical approach used in the management of chronic spinal conditions such as spondylosis, degenerative disc disease, and spondylolisthesis. A wide variety of orthoses are available to aid in addressing cervical, thoracic, lumbar, thoracic, and SI joint pain. In this review, we aim to comprehensively examine brace types with their current applications and implications of usage. RECENT FINDINGS: There are multiple cervical bracing options, such as soft and rigid collars, to assist in managing acute trauma and chronic degenerat
