This article reviews MRI findings of parasitic diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), with emphasis on neurocysticercosis, which is by far the most common CNS parasitic infection worldwide. MRI findings of neurocysticercosis are various, depending on the location (parenchymal, cisternal, ventricular, and spinal forms), and temporal evolutional stages (vesicular, colloid vesicular, granular nodular, and nodular calcified stages) of the worm. Classical findings of each location and stage are presented. Characteristic MRI findings of cerebral toxoplasmosis frequently seen in patients with

To turn a well-known phrase regarding history, those who forget to diagnose strongyloidiasis will be condemned to rediscover it. The often protean manifestations of this disease cannot be emphasized enough. The parasite's unique life cycle enables it to live for decades in an unsuspecting host, presenting with symptomatic disease only occasionally. Making a definitive diagnosis may be difficult and requires persistence. A good history should reveal whether a patient belongs to a high-risk group. The physician should strongly suspect the diagnosis when nonspecific cutaneous, pulmonary, and gast

The infection by Toxocara canis transmitted by dogs (30% of them are infected in our countries) and less frequently by cats lead to larva mi … ument in favour of a progressive infection. High total IgE is an hallmark of visceral infections by parasites and total IgE level is well correlated with the presence of intra-tissular larva. The serological diagnosis is based on the determination of specific IgG by ELISA which appears also to be interesting for the patient's follow up. The western blot met …

The skin being exposed to the environment is commonly the portal of entry for parasites. Infections with parasites characteristically produce cutaneous lesions as well as systemic disease in humans. In the past, parasitic diseases were limited to their endemic areas. With the relative ease of worldwide travel, however, they are appearing with increasing frequency in the United States and other developed countries. This article describes the characteristic cutaneous findings of parasitic diseases that physicians in the United States may encounter in their medical practice.

Sexual activity is the primary method of transmission for several important parasitic diseases and has resulted in a significant prevalence of enteric parasitic infection among male homosexuals. The majority of parasitic sexually transmitted diseases involve protozoan pathogens; however, nematode and arthropod illnesses are also included in this group. Trichomoniasis, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, is the most common parasitic STD. Infection with this organism typically results in the signs and symptoms of vaginitis. Trichomoniasis can be diagnosed in the office setting by performing a micro

All children returning from countries where parasitic diseases are endemic should be investigated for one or several of these diseases according to the region visited and the duration of the visit. Investigations should include at least a parasitological examination of the stools, sometimes completed by a search for urinary schistosomiasis and, at the slightest suspicion, an examination of the eye. The gastrointestinal and percutaneous modes of transmission of parasitoses are such that children are particularly at risk. The most frequently encountered diseases are ankylostomiasis, anguillulias

Selected parasitic zoonoses are discussed with emphasis on epidemiological, diagnostic and some chemotherapeutic aspects. Pneumocystosis, toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis are briefly reviewed as "AIDS-related zoonoses". Up to now 5 genera of Microsporidia have been identified as causative agents of human infections, including Encephalitozoon cuniculi, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Pleistophora sp. which were found in AIDS patients. From the many "other parasitic zoonoses", giardiasis, echinococcosis and taeniosis/cysticercosis are discussed as examples. Significant advances

Parasitic infections are a sufficiently common cause of pleural disease that parasitosis should be considered in any effusion of unclear cau … eosinophilia, toxocariasis, anisakiasis, hypodermiasis, strongyloidiasis, and schistosomiasis. Some parasites, including pentastomids and Mansonella sp, can be found in the pleura incidentally by radiograph or autopsy, but seldom if ever cause pleural disease.

Parasitic arthropods are responsible for enormous economic losses to livestock producers throughout the world. These production losses may r … induction of immunity. In this review, R. W. Baron and J. Weintraub discuss several examples of ectoparasites that can induce immunological resistance in the host, including Sarcoptes and Demodex mites, the sheep ked (Melophagus ovinus), Anopluran lice and myiasis-causing flies such as Hypoderma.

Parasitic infestation is a major health problem in tropical countries. Increasing tourism and the influx of refugees from Southeast Asia demand a greater awareness of ocular parasitology. In Thailand, cysticercosis, gnathostomiasis, and angiostrongyliasis are the three commonest ocular parasitic diseases. No antiparasitic drugs are yet available to treat ocular involvement, and therapeutic success depends upon early and complete surgical removal. Because the eye is the only site at which direct visualization and surgical removal are possible, ocular examination is crucial to diagnosis and trea
