Evidence for a functional cholinergic innervation of cerebral arteries.

Cat and rabbit cerebral arteries were compared to determine whether cholinergic nerves are present in both species. Low levels of acetylcholine and high affinity choline accumulation were found in noncerebral vessels of both species. Since it is doubtful that these low levels reflect the presence of a cholinergic innervation, they can be seen as indicators of background levels of these parameters in blood vessels. Cerebral arteries of both species contained much higher amounts of acetylcholine; levels ranged from 9 to 36 nmol/g. Accumulation of choline was also measured. Choline accumulation t

Cholinergic activation produces psychosomatic digitalis toxicity.

The purpose of this study was first to develop an animal model for stress-induced digitalis toxicity in such a way that physical and psychological factors might be kept separate. The other purpose was to begin an analysis of the mechanism of this psychosomatic effect. To do this, free-ranging guinea pigs were subjected to repeated sessions of signaled shock (Pavlovian fear conditioning) or to signal alone. On a probe day in which signals were delivered as usual but shock was not administered, guinea pigs were infused i.v. with ouabain after an i.p. injection of either saline, atropine sulfate

On some relationships between gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the cholinergic mechanisms in pentylenetetrazol convulsions.

In experiments on albino mice with pentylenetetrazol convulsions it has been found that GABA, introduced intracerebroventricularly in a dose of 100 microgram/mouse, has a marked anticonvulsive effect. Scopolamine in doses of 1, 10 and 50 mg/kg i. p. does not influence significantly the convulsive-seizure reactions, while spasmolytin inhibits them only in large doses (80 mg/kg weight). The inhibitory effect of GABA does not change significantly on the background of scopolamine, while spasmolytin in a dose of 50 mg/kg (and to a lesser extent 80 mg/kg) antagonizes the inhibitory effect of GABA. A

Early Signs of Autonomic Nervous System Imbalance in Children with High Cardiometabolic Risk.

OBJECTIVE: Autonomic nervous system is involved in many disorders, and changes in its modulation are the known risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Its role in metabolic disarrangements in children at high cardio-metabolic risk is not known. Aim of the study is to analyze the relation between clinical-metabolic parameters and autonomic nervous system in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children affected by type 1 diabetes (group 1), obesity (group 2), and control group (group 3) were enrolled. Autonomic nervous system functionality was assessed with dynamic tests (The Expiration to Inspi

Otitis media and respiratory sinus arrhythmia across infancy and early childhood: Polyvagal processes?

Otitis media (OM)-or middle-ear inflammation-is the most widely diagnosed childhood illness, with evidence implicating OM in a range of distal problems (e.g., language delays, attention problems). Polyvagal theory (Porges, 1995, 2007) posits that there also are likely important connections between middle-ear functioning and children's developing parasympathetic nervous systems (PNS). Using prospective longitudinal data from the Family Life Project (n = 748), we tested within- and between-person relations between indicators of OM (middle-ear spectral gradient angle; SGA) and children's trajecto…

Resting heart rate variability and heart rate recovery after submaximal exercise.

PURPOSE: Aerobic training accelerates Heart Rate Recovery after exercise in healthy subjects and in patients with coronary disease. As shown by pharmacological autonomic blockade, HRR early after exercise is dependent primarily on parasympathetic reactivation. Thus, accelerated HRR early after exercise in endurance-trained athletes may be attributed to augmented parasympathetic reactivation. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the HRR early after submaximal exercise is related to the pre-exercise parasympathetic modulation. METHODS: Thirty endurance-trained athletes (20 males,

Anatomic approach for ganglionic plexi ablation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

There is evidence that parasympathetic denervation may prevent atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrences. This study aimed at applying an anatomic approach for ablation of atrial ganglionic plexi (GPs) in patients with paroxysmal AF. Nineteen patients with symptomatic, paroxysmal AF underwent anatomically guided radiofrequency ablation at the location of the 4 main left atrial GPs and were prospectively assessed for recurrence of AF or other atrial arrhythmia. This group was compared with 19 age- and gender-matched patients who previously underwent conventional circumferential pulmonary vein ablati

Parasympathetic control of the pupillary light response in the red-eared slider turtle (Pseudemys scripta elegans).

OBJECTIVE: We investigated effects of both vecuronium bromide, a nicotinic cholinergic antagonist, and atropine, a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, on the pupil of the turtle to determine whether responses to light are controlled by parasympathetic innervations acting on the iris. ANIMAL STUDIED: Three red-eared slider turtles, Pseudemys scripta elegans. PROCEDURE: Turtles were secured to immobilize their head movements and then inserted into a light-integrating sphere. Both pupils were monitored through small apertures by digital video cameras. Pupil diameters were measured manually with

The bullet that hit a nerve: the history of Lucja Frey and her syndrome.

Duphenix first described gustatory sweating in 1757. The underlying pathogenesis was not appreciated until 1923, when Lucja Frey, a Polish neurologist, observed the phenomenon in a Polish soldier with an infected bullet wound in the parotid gland and suggested that the auriculo-temporal nerve played a role. Lucja Frey was born in Lwów, Poland, in 1889 and began her medical studies in Lwów before moving to Warsaw to work as a neurologist. She amassed a total of 43 publications on various neurological topics over her career. Unfortunately, during the Second World War she was enlisted into the Lw

Relationship between temporal changes in cardiac parasympathetic activity and motion sickness severity.

Chemotherapy-induced nausea has been associated with a time-related decrease in cardiac parasympathetic activity. We tested the hypothesis that a time-related decrease in cardiac parasympathetic activity would also be associated with nausea and other motion sickness symptoms during illusory self-motion (vection). Fifty-nine participants (aged 18-34 years: 25 male) were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum to induce vection. Symptoms of motion sickness and an estimate of cardiac parasympathetic activity (respiratory sinus arrhythmia; RSA) were obtained at baseline and throughout a drum-rotati

Relationship of gastric myoelectrical and cardiac parasympathetic activity to chemotherapy-induced nausea.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated (a) whether pretreatment levels of gastric tachyarrhythmia, a dysrhythmic pattern of gastric myoelectrical activity, or cardiac parasympathetic activity are associated with the development of chemotherapy-induced nausea and (b) whether chemotherapy-induced nausea is preceded by an increase in gastric tachyarrhythmia and a decrease in cardiac parasympathetic activity, as has been observed during motion sickness. METHODS: Electrogastrograms and estimates of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) were obtained from cancer chemotherapy patients before treatment and for approx

Distribution of choline acetyltransferase immunoreactivity in the pigeon brain.

We have investigated the distribution of cholinergic perikarya and fibers in the brain of the pigeon (Columba livia). With this aim, pigeon brain sections were processed immunohistochemically by using an antiserum specific for chicken choline acetyltransferase. Our results show cholinergic neurons in the pigeon basal telencephalon, the hypothalamus, the habenula, the pretectum, the midbrain tectum, the dorsal isthmus, the isthmic tegmentum, and the cranial nerve motor nuclei. Cholinergic fibers were prominent in the dorsal telencephalon, the striatum, the thalamus, the tectum, and the interpedu

Parasympathetic denervation of the iris in Chagas' disease.

The parasympathetic innervation of the iris along with cardiovascular reflexes involving parasympathetic and sympathetic function were studied in 45 patients with Chagas's disease and in 36 controls. The autonomic features in Chagas' disease included 15 with cardiomyopathy, three with megaoesophagus and five with megacolon. None of the patients had orthostatic hypotension. Parasympathetic cardiac reflexes (deep breathing 30:15 ratio, Valsalva) were abnormal. There were exaggerated pupillary responses to dilute pilocarpine. These studies suggest iris parasympathetic denervation and favour more

The effects of atropine and chronic sympathectomy on maximal parasympathetic stimulation of parotid saliva in rats.

1. The effects of stimulating the postganglionic parasympathetic nerve to the parotid gland, the auriculo-temporal nerve, continuously at 40 Hz for 80 min have been assessed on the flow of saliva and its amylase content during each 10 min period and on the glandular morphology at the end of the stimulation, in female Sprague-Dawley rats under chloralose anaesthesia. Adrenergic responses were blocked by prior administration of dihydroergotamine (1 mg/kg I.P.) and propranolol (1 mg/kg I.P.). The contralateral unstimulated parotid gland from each animal was used for morphological control purposes

Changes in cholinergic function in rat brain late in abstinence after chronic barbital treatment.

The effect of a forced long-term barbital treatment (daily dosage about 200 mg/kg for 32 weeks) on cholinergic brain mechanisms was studied on days 53 and 81 - 83 after withdrawal. Some of the barbital-treated rats were given a single injection of atropine (8 mg/kg intraperitoneally) on the third day of abstinence (group BA), while the other barbital-treated rats received saline (group BS). The sensitivity to a threshold dose of choline was tested on day 53. The rats in the BS group were more sensitive to choline than those in the control groups. When the rats were sacrificed on day 81 - 83 af

[Argyll Robertson in a case of malignant lymphoma with ciliary involvement (author's transl)].

The authors report a case malignant lymphoma associated with a pseudotabetic syndrome including ataxia, tendon areflexia and an Argyll Robertson pupil. Blood and CSF serological tests for syphilis were negative. Death occurred after 11 years of evolution. An autopsy revealed a malignant lymphoma with mediastinal and retroperitoneal tumor proliferation as well as infiltration of peripheral nerves, in particular the ciliary nerves and one ciliary ganglion examined. No lesion was found in the mesencephalon. The importance of this case lies in its contribution to the location of the pathological c

[Long-term HRV analysis shows stress reduction by magnesium intake].

BACKGROUND: Mental pressure and stress represent an ever-increasing socio-political challenge. The heart rate variability (HRV) measurement, which has its origin in the cardiac function diagnosis, gives information on the neurovegetative activity. A low HRV shows an imbalance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic efferents and thus is an indicator of stress. METHOD: A randomized, controlled, two-armed parallel study with 100 participants and a period of 90 days was performed. Main object of investigation was to what extent the mineral magnesium, which is also a high-quality natural calcium a
