PURPOSE: Of all benign salivary gland tumors of the parotid gland, pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most common. It accounts for 60% to 70% of all benign tumors of the parotid gland. This neoplasm arises in patients in the fourth to sixth decade of life, with a female predominance. The surgical excision of this lesion continues to be the subject of major debate. The goal is to avoid facial disability yet attain complete resection without perforation of the capsule/pseudocapsule. The purpose of our study is to compare 2 surgical techniques performed at the Ear, Nose, and Throat and Maxi

CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man presented with a 3.4 cm, slow-growing, hypermetabolic, right parotid mass of 1-year duration with associated intermittent pain, facial swelling, and transient facial nerve paresthesia, together with FDG avid osseous lesions of the right mandibular ramus, lateral scapula, and iliac crest. Subsequent FNA of the parotid mass showed findings consistent with acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC). The patient underwent a right total parotidectomy with ipsilateral neck dissection. Histologic examination revealed a diffusely-infiltrative, lobulated, malignant neoplasm comp

INTRODUCTION: Salivary gland tumors are rare, comprising about 3% of all head and neck neoplasms. About 80% of the tumors are in parotids, 10% in submandibular glands and the remainders are distributed in sublingual and minor salivary glands. This study was conducted to evaluate the relative frequencies, types, site of distribution and the histopathological features of salivary gland tumors.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara from January 2011 to December 2019. Ethical approval was taken from

Accurate differentiation between benign and malignant parotid tumors is imperative for patient prognosis. However, due to the high degree of heterogeneity of parotid tumors and the limited availability of imaging data, preoperative diagnosis remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, the present study proposes a multimodal deep learning framework based on small-sample learning. This framework integrates multi-sequence MRI information and incorporates a multi-scale spatial attention mechanism to improve feature extraction and classification performance in situations where samples a

OBJECTIVE: Surgery involving the skull base has recently gained significant prominence in treatment of head and neck cancer. "En bloc temporal-parotid resection," as applied in primary malignancies of the external ear, should be considered as a shift in the surgical landscape of "extended total parotidectomies" to achieve negative surgical margins and decrease the risk of tumor spillage during the procedure. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate survival outcomes and margin status in patients with parotid malignancies involving the temporal bone and treated with temporal-parotid

Surgeons used to be unaware of the facial nerve's position during parotid surgery. Now, with special magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, it can be located and converted into a 3D model displayed on an augmented reality (AR) device for surgeons to study and manipulate. This study explores the accuracy and usefulness of the technique for the treatment of benign and malignant parotid tumours. A total of 20 patients with parotid tumours had 3-Tesla MRI scans, and their anatomical structures were segmented using Slicer software. The structures were imported into a Microsoft HoloLens 2® devi

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of parotid gland tumors is sometimes challenging due to their diversity and pleomorphic histological appearance. B-scan sonography along with color-coded duplex sonography is the gold standard in the diagnostic workup of these lesions, whereas histopathology is to date the gold standard for the final diagnosis. To date no single imaging technique provides the chance for an art-diagnosis with highly diagnostic accuracy. Contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) on the other hand provides information of the perfusion down to the capillary level. Currently there are only a fe

This case series reports familial cases of nodular oncocytic hyperplasia (NOH) diagnosed in a mother and her son, 15 years apart. A 39-year-old man presented in 2003 with a lump below his left ear. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed showed multifocal parotid nodules and a diagnosis of NOH was histopathologically confirmed following left total parotidectomy. Two years later, he represented with similar symptoms on the right side. NOH was diagnosed following excision of his right parotid gland. In 2018, his 73-year-old mother presented with left ear pain and a lump below her left ear. An
