Pulmonary disease due to aspiration of food and other particulate matter: a clinicopathologic study of 59 cases diagnosed on biopsy or resection specimens.

Aspiration of particulate matter is a well-recognized complication in debilitated patients at autopsy but is not widely recognized in surgical pathology material. We have encountered a surprising number of cases on biopsy or resection specimens, and most were unsuspected clinically and pathologically. This study was undertaken to clarify clinical and pathologic features that facilitate the diagnosis of food/particulate matter aspiration pneumonia. Fifty-nine patients were identified with an average age of 57 (range 26 to 85), and a male/female ratio of 2:1. Common presenting symptoms (informat…

Effect of particulate matter air pollution on hospital admissions and medical visits for lung and heart disease in two southeast Idaho cities.

Few, if any, published time series studies have evaluated the effects of particulate matter air exposures by combining hospital admissions with medical visit data for smaller populations. We investigated the relationship between daily particulate matter (<10 microm in aerometric diameter or PM10) exposures with admissions and medical visits (emergency room, urgent care, and family practice) for respiratory and cardiovascular disease in Pocatello and Chubbuck, Idaho (population about 60,000), from November 1994 through March 2000. Within generalized linear models, time, weather, influenza, and …

Regional air quality: local and interstate impacts of NO(x) and SO2 emissions on ozone and fine particulate matter in the eastern United States.

While the U.S. air quality management system is largely designed and managed on a state level, many critical air quality problems are now recognized as regional. In particular, concentrations of two secondary pollutants, ozone and particulate matter, are often above regulated levels and can be dependent on emissions from upwind states. Here, impacts of statewide emissions on concentrations of local and downwind states' ozone and fine particulate matter are simulated for three seasonal periods in the eastern United States using a regional Eulerian photochemical model. Impacts of ground level NO…

Long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter and its association with Alzheimer's disease: influencing factors and a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) poses a pressing public health burden globally. Evidence linking long-term ambient particulate matter exposure to AD risk remains inconsistent, necessitating systematic quantification to inform prevention policies. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library up to September 2025 for cohort studies with ≥1 year of particulate exposure (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, NOx, O3) and incident/diagnosed AD. Quality was assessed via the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), with random-effects models pooling hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs; subgroup analy…

Long-term exposure to sandstorms-related particulate matter and risks of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a national cohort study.

Climate change and anthropogenic activities are intensifying the frequency and severity of sand and dust storms (SDS), leading to higher emissions of SDS-related airborne particulate matter (dust PM). However, the health risks associated with long-term exposure to size-specific dust PM and the underlying physiological mechanisms remain unclear. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the all-cause and specific-cause mortality hazard ratios (HRs) associated with long-term exposure to dust PM2.5, dust PM2.5-10 and dust PM10 in a national cohort study of 46,817 participants conducted …

Quantifying the reduction in particulate matter by urban park green spaces using a random forest model: A case study of Hohhot, China.

Urban particulate matter (PM) pollution poses a serious threat to residents' health, and urban park green spaces (UPGSs) can play an important role in reducing the PM. Previous studies have highlighted how differences in plant traits, community structure, and green space configuration influence PM reduction. However, the extent to which meteorological factors, park built-up environment indicators, and other variables differentially drive PM reduction by UPGSs remains unclear. This study investigated 37 parks in Hohhot to assess the reduction rates (DR) of 6 p.m. size fractions using summer day…

Long-Term Particulate Matter Exposure and Risk of Psoriasis Incidence, and Short-Term Exposure and Risk of Exacerbation: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease influenced by environmental factors, including air pollution. However, large-scale evidence from Asian populations, where particulate matter (PM) exposure is relatively high, remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between long-term PM exposure and psoriasis incidence, and short-term exposure with exacerbation risk. We conducted a cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, involving 8 396 764 individuals. Long-term exposure was assessed based on annual average concentrations of fine PM (PM2.5)…

Development of a simple solvent-based pretreatment technique for rapid and accurate quantification of PAHs in PAH-containing particulate matter for toxicity assessment.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter (PM) is a major airborne pollutant whose toxicity is strongly influenced by its chemical composition. Among its components, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are key toxic and carcinogenic organic compounds, making the rapid and accurate quantification of these compounds essential for establishing inhalation toxicity exposure conditions. However, existing PAH pretreatment protocols have been optimized for trace-level environmental monitoring and therefore rely on long extraction times and complex instrumentation, making them unsuitable for high-concentratio…

Characteristics of particulate matter from asphalt pavement and tire of a moving bus through driving tests in city road and proving ground.

Non-exhaust PM emissions from vehicles in real road have been conducted, but heavy vehicles have rarely been tested. In this study, PM2.5 and PM10 samples were directly collected from a tire of a moving bus and the composition was analyzed to investigate the sources of PM emissions. Driving tests were conducted at a proving ground (PG) and a city road (CR). PM2.5 emissions considerably increased when the lateral force of the tire increased and the vehicle accelerated. The PM emission rate was higher in the PG test than in the CR test because of the harsher driving conditions at PG. The emissio

Cascade Filtration With PCR Detection and Field-Flow-Fractionation Online With ICP-MS for the Characterization of DNA Interaction With Suspended Particulate Matter.

The variety of applied antibiotics in animal and human medicine results in the release, development, and spread of relevant numbers of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. The majority of ARGs are present in intracellular forms (in bacteria). Neglected aspects are extracellular variants of ARGs (eARGs) and their fragments, which have been detected in surface-water samples and sediments. The stability of eARGs is expected to be low; however, binding to particulate matter is likely to improve their stability and also affect their transport and dissemination behavior. Few studie…
