Technology-enabled sexual health promotion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Technology-enabled approaches are increasingly used to support health education, yet the extent and characteristics of digital interventions addressing sexual health promotion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) remain unclear. Individuals with IDD often experience limited access to developmentally appropriate sexuality education, highlighting the need to understand how technology is being used to support learning, safety and autonomy. This scoping review aims to map peer-reviewed evidence on technology-enabled sexual health promotion for indivi

Perceptions of women with multiple sclerosis about osteoporosis follow-up.

Research has demonstrated that women with multiple sclerosis (MS) do not make maximum use of information about osteoporosis prevention and management, even when they are well-informed. Focus-group methodology and telephone interviews were used to study how women with MS use or could use information about osteoporosis prevention and management to influence their healthcare providers to attend to osteoporosis-related needs. Twenty-two participants were asked to discuss their own and their peers' experience of sharing osteoporosis screening results with healthcare providers, as well as factors th

Interactions between PTH and adiposity: appetizing possibilities.

Although parathyroid hormone (PTH) is best known for its role as a regulator of skeletal remodelling and calcium homeostasis, more recent evidence supports a role for it in energy metabolism and other non-classical targets. In this report, we summarize evidence for an effect of PTH on adipocytes. This review is based upon all peer-reviewed papers, published in the English language with PubMed as the primary search engine. Recent preclinical studies have documented an effect of PTH to stimulate lipolysis in both adipocytes and liver cells and to cause browning of adipocytes. PTH also reduces bo

Developmental origins of cognitive vulnerabilities to depression: review of processes contributing to stability and change across time.

Cognitive theories of depression have been shown to be potent predictors of future increases in depressive symptoms and disorder in children, adolescents, and adults. This article focuses on potential developmental origins of the main cognitive vulnerabilities, including dysfunctional attitudes, negative cognitive style, and rumination. We selectively review processes and factors that have been hypothesized to contribute to the emergence and stabilization of these cognitive risk factors. This review focuses on genetic factors, temperament, parents and peers as salient interpersonal influences,

Semantic and phonological loop effects on verbal working memory in middle-age adults with mental retardation.

Semantic and phonological loop effects on verbal working memory were examined among middle-age adults with Down syndrome and those with unspecified mental retardation in the context of Baddeley's working memory model. Recall was poorer for phonologically similar, semantically similar, and long words compared to recall of dissimilar short words. Compared to their peers, participants with Down syndrome had poorer recall in all categories except phonologically similar words. Most interestingly, semantic similarity lowered recall scores only in participants with Down syndrome. This selective effec

Identifying the manifestations of inhalant abuse.

Inhalants are frequently the first mood-altering drugs used by children. They are popular because of peer influences, low cost, availability, and rapid mood-elevation effects. Inhalants cause a fleeting sense of well being, but users frequently are also affected psychologically and physically. Substances such as gasoline and paint thinners are highly toxic and destroy major organs. The abuse of inhalants can cause cardiac arrest, asphyxiation, and accidents. This article focuses on the clinical manifestation of inhalants, altered lab values, the specific agents used, and their effects on the v…

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: an epidemiologic study in Israel.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a disease related to measles (rubeola) infection, was more common in Arabs and Sephardi Jews than in Ashkenazi Jews in Israel. There were no familial aggregates and it is unlikely that genetic differences account for this selectivity. Among several non-genetic factors which might explain the selectivity, family size emerged as a possible risk factor. Family size has not previously been suspected as influencing the risk of SSPE. Preponderance of SSPE in rural areas and among the poor would also be compatible with this idea as family size tends to be l
