OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of percutaneous endoscopic treatment of renal pelvic transitional cell carcinoma (TCC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients (median age, 70 years; range 56-86) with a renal pelvic TCC were treated by percutaneous endoscopic resection. Seven had a normal contralateral kidney and were treated electively.
RESULTS: Follow-up was from 3 to 77 months. There was one recurrence locally and one recurrence in the bladder. There have been no recurrences in the nephrostomy tract.

We followed 135 primary bladder carcinoma patients for at least 3 years. Subsequent carcinomas of the upper urinary tract were found in 5 patients (3.7 per cent) an average of 67 months after an initial treatment of the bladder tumors. Two patients underwent radical cystectomy and the remaining 3 patients received transurethral resections or partial cystectomy five to seven times for bladder lesions. The study was carried at two different centres. Only 9 cases of primary malignant tumours of the renal pelvis could be collected during the period of 7 years (1984-1990). Renal pelvis malignancies constituted 0.21% of all the malignancies and 12.16% of all the malignant growths of the kidney (9 out of 74 cases). Extremely rarely renal cell carcinoma metastasizes to the contralateral renal pelvis or ureter. The present report concerns a case where a metastatic tumor could be successfully removed from the left renal pelvis 3 years after right nephrectomy for the primary tumor. A review of the literature revealed this to be only the fourth such case documented.

A 73-year-old man complained of macroscopic hematuria. Preoperative diagnosis was left giant hydronephrosis due to UPJ stenosis. Resected kidney unsuspectedly contained multiple papillary tumors. Ureterectomy and partial cystectomy was additionally performed. Histological examination showed transitional cell carcinoma. Urinary stasis in the dilated pelvis may have been one of the causes of carcinomatous changes in the epithelium in our case.
