Analysis of different fermentation processes of jujube-hawthorn fermented beverage based on untargeted metabolomics and GC-MS.

In this study, we compared two processes: "Lactobacillus single fermentation 36 h→ inactivation→yeast re-fermentation (InLA)" and "Lactobacillus-yeast simultaneous co-fermentation (LSA)," using jujube and hawthorn composite juice as the substrate. We applied non-targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis to evaluate how sterilization affects quality. The results showed that in LSA, the total acid continued to increase, and levels of total phenolics, tota

EWAS in a polyphenol dense, DNA methylation-targeted, controlled diet and lifestyle study.

BACKGROUND: Dietary and lifestyle factors can influence DNA methylation patterns. We previously reported epigenetic age attenuation following a controlled study using an 8-week polyphenol-dense, DNA methylation-targeted diet and lifestyle intervention in healthy males (Methylation Diet and Lifestyle Study), with phytonutrient/polyphenol-rich foods (green tea, oolong tea, curcumin, garlic, and berries) being most predictive of this effect. METHODS: Here we conducted an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) in 38 participants from the Methylation Diet and Lifestyle Study. The intervention inc

Two novel Patescibacteria: Phycocordibacter aenigmaticus gen. nov. sp. nov. and Minusculum obligatum gen. nov. sp. nov., both associated with microalgae optimized for carbon dioxide sequestration from flue gas.

The functional roles of bacterial symbionts associated with microalgae remain understudied despite the importance of microalgae in biotechno … (TCA) cycle pathways, and inability to synthesize amino acids. Instead, they rely on the reductive pentose phosphate pathway (Calvin cycle) for essential biosynthesis and redox balance. P. aenigmaticus may also rely on elemental sulfur oxidation (sdo), partial nitrite reduction (nirK), and sulfur-related amino acid metabolism (SAMe → SAH). Both bacteria were found in high …

The physiology and metabolism of the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori.

Helicobacter pylori is a spiral Gram-negative microaerophilic bacterium that causes one of the most common infections in humans; approximate … es for glycolytic enzymes are present, physiological studies indicate that the Entner-Doudoroff and pentose phosphate pathways are more active. Glutathione deficiency-elicited reprogramming of hepatic metabolism protects against alcohol-induced steatosis.

Depletion of glutathione (GSH) is considered a critical pathogenic event promoting alcohol-induced lipotoxicity. We recently show that systemic GSH deficiency in mice harboring a global disruption of the glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit (Gclm) gene confers protection against alcohol-induced steatosis. While several molecular pathways have been linked to the observed hepatic protection, including nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and AMP-activated protein kinase pathways, the precise mechanisms are yet to be defined. In this study, to gain insights into the molecular mechani

Besides … phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) is the first and rate-limiting enzyme of the oxidative phase of the pentose phosphate pathway (oxiPPP) with the capacity to generate NADPH. Thus far, the available information on G6PDH and other NADPH-generating enzymatic systems in pepper plants, and their expression during the ripening of sweet pepper fruit, is very scarce. Therefore, an a …

Dependence of Mycoplasma bovis on a novel nucleoside transporter for survival in association with host cells.

UNLABELLED: Transport systems play a vital role in metabolism in mycoplasmas by facilitating the uptake of essential nutrients from host cells, on which mycoplasmas are highly dependent. Co-culture of Mycoplasma bovis with Madin-Darby bovine kidney cells has shown that the gene MBOVPG45_0748 is essential for the survival of M. bovis in association with host cells. To characterize the function of this protein, intracellular and extracellular metabolomic profiles of a mutant strain with a transposon inserted into the MBOVPG45_0748 gene (∆MBOVPG45_0748) were compared to those of the parent strain

Sperm meet the elevated energy demands to attain fertilization competence by increasing flux through aldolase.

In activated sperm, glucose flux through glycolysis is increased at the expense of the pentose phosphate pathway to increase energy yield. Increased glycolytic activity seems to be due to capacitation-induced stimulation of flux through aldolase. Understanding how different WPCS varieties influence gastrointestinal microbiota and metabolic profiles is essential for optimizing feed efficiency and animal health. METHODS: This study examined the effects of three corn varieties (2 introduced - Tunyu 168: TY; Yu silage 23: YQZ, and 1 local Longsheng 1: LS) in WPCS on gastrointestinal bacteria and metabolites in lambs. Effects of dietary starch and ruminally undegraded protein on glucogenic precursors in lactating dairy cows.

Gluconeogenesis is a large contributor to the blood supply of glucose carbons. The impact of varying dietary starch and ruminally degraded protein (RDP) on glucose entry, and the contributions of propionate and lactate to total plasma glucose entry were evaluated. Six cannulated, lactating, Holstein cows were fed one of four treatment diets arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial within a 4 × 4 partially replicated Latin Square design: (1) 8% RDP (LRDP) and 16% starch (LSt), (2) LRDP and 30% starch (HSt), (3) 11% RDP (HRDP) and LSt, or (4) HRDP and HSt. On d 12 of each period, 2-[13C]-sodium propionate
