BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hoffmann sign is commonly used during screening for cervical myelopathy, but its diagnostic performance varies across studies. Psychological factors such as anxiety have been proposed as possible contributors to false-positive or variable reflex findings, yet data are limited. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among patients with a positive Hoffmann sign but no cervical cord compression on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study included 99 consecutive adults evaluated in a neurosurgery

Background/Objectives: Psychiatric morbidity is frequent in oncology, yet prevalence and correlates differ across tumour sites. Urogenital cancers, in particular, involve psychosocial stressors related to sexuality, fertility, continence, and body image, which may intensify anxiety and depression. This study aimed to estimate the proportion of psychiatric morbidity among psychiatry-assessed oncology inpatients in a real-world hospital setting to compare urogenital with non-urogenital malignancies and to examine clinical correlates and hospitalisation outcomes. Methods: We conducted a retrospec

INTRODUCTION: Mental health problems are pervasive nowadays. Adolescents are often expected to balance academic performance with familial obligations and work to support the family financially if they belong to low-socio-economic areas. These pressures can lead to Anxiety, stress, and even depression.
OBJECTIVE: The study's main objective is to assess the association of gender, parenting style, eating habit, and screen timing with the level of Anxiety among school-going adolescents in three peri-urban areas of Karachi, Pakistan.
METHODOLOGY: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted

RATIONALE: Pre-clinical and clinical investigations have provided a great deal of evidence that the fear-potentiated startle paradigm represents a valid model for the objective assessment of emotional states of anxiety and fear.
OBJECTIVE: The four studies presented in this report sought to further validate the "threat of shock" paradigm as a human analogue to fear-potentiated startle in rats, by examining the effect of benzodiazepine administration on both baseline and fear-potentiated startle.
METHODS: Three studies, conducted at Utrecht University, evaluated the effects of oxazepam and of

INTRODUCTION: Mental health difficulties are highly prevalent among university students. The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework seeks to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention by providing a comprehensive framework for understanding mental health and illness. We report the prevalence of stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms in a student sample and investigate their relationship with the RDoC domains positive valence system (PVS), negative valence system (NVS), cognitive systems (CS), and social processes (SP). Differences by faculty affiliation are also explored.

BACKGROUND: Competitive anxiety is a critical factor that affects athletes' performance and mental well-being. The Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (SAS-2) is a widely used multidimensional measure for sport-specific anxiety, but a validated Japanese version has been unavailable. This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the SAS-2 and evaluate its reliability and validity among university athletes in Japan.
METHODS: After a standard back-translation process, 640 university athletes (mean age 19.1 ± 1.0 years) completed an online survey containing the Japanese SAS-2 and scales for competitive anx

QUESTION: Do measures of state anxiety and trait anxiety in people with acute low back pain (ALBP) improve prediction of chronic low back pain (CLBP), defined as pain or pain-related disability at 12 weeks?
DESIGN: Observational multi-centre prospective cohort study in primary physiotherapy care with measurements at baseline and at 12 weeks of state and trait anxiety, as well as other established prognostic factors for CLBP.
PARTICIPANTS: People with nonspecific ALBP, aged 18 to 60 years, who had been pain free for ≥ 3 months before their current ALBP, and who were being treated according th

The goal of this study was to examine patterns of comorbidity associated with generalized and performance-focused social phobia (SOP) among a community-based sample of youth while also examining whether gender and age influenced the associations found. Participants from the Methods for the Epidemiology of Child and Adolescent Mental Disorders (MECA) Study, aged 9-17 (N=1295), were used. Diagnoses were based on structured clinical interviews with youth and their caregivers. Results indicated that both subtypes of SOP were associated with a range of other anxiety disorders. Significant performance failures by athletes can have detrimental psychological effects, potentially leading to maladaptive coping mechanisms, performance anxiety, and psychological distress. The current study investigated if a brief writing intervention could combat the negative impact of recalled performance failures in a sample of competitive athletes. Initially, the athletes recalled an instance of a significant performance failure. Next, an Intervention group completed an expressive writing task based on the principles of cognitive restructuring and reframing, and a Control group complete…

Compared to rodents, the relationship between anxiety and cognitive performances has been less studied in birds. Yet, birds are frequently exposed to stimulations that constitute a potential source of anxiety and can affect their adaptation to their living conditions. The present study was aimed at evaluating, in birds, the relationship between levels of anxiety and object habituation and discrimination with the use of Japanese quail lines divergently selected for a fear response, tonic immobility. Previous studies demonstrated that the selection programme has modified the general anxiety trai

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Preoperative anxiety is a common issue among patients undergoing third-molar surgery, significantly impacting physiological stability, surgical outcomes, and recovery, highlighting the need for effective non-pharmacological interventions. This systematic review was performed to delineate the current literature regarding non-pharmacological interventions aimed at alleviating preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing an odontectomy.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed across major databases, including Cochrane, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Scien

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is increasingly recognized in patients with non-central nervous system malignancies, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), although evidence on pre-treatment cognitive functioning and associated psychosocial factors remains limited. This exploratory study investigated baseline cognitive functioning in NSCLC patients before oncological treatment and examined the role of cognitive reserve, emotional distress, sleep quality, and subjective cognitive complaints.
METHODS: Fifty NSCLC patients underwent comprehensive neuropsychological

BACKGROUND: Obesity is cited as a relevant factor in multiple sclerosis (MS). To date, there is inconsistent evidence regarding the relationship between total body fat and frequently studied outcomes in MS. Body fat distribution, or the location of adipose tissue and depots within the body, may represent a biologically meaningful correlate of MS-related outcomes.
PURPOSE: This exploratory study assessed whether dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-based body fat distribution metrics were associated with performance-based and self-reported outcomes of MS.
METHODS: Fifty-seven ambulatory adu

Choices and response times in two-alternative decision-making tasks can be modeled by assuming that individuals steadily accrue evidence in favor of each alternative until a response boundary for one of them is crossed, at which point that alternative is chosen. Prior studies have reported that evidence accumulation during decision-making tasks takes longer in adults with psychopathology than in healthy controls, indicating that slow evidence accumulation may be transdiagnostic. However, few studies have examined perceptual decision making in anxiety disorders, where hypervigilance might enhan

Cognitive demands can influence the adaptation of walking, a crucial skill to maintain body stability and prevent falls. Whilst previous research has shown emotional load tunes goal-directed movements, little attention has been given to this finding. This study sought to assess the effects of suffering an extinction-resistant memory on skilled walking performance in adult rats, as an indicator of walking adaptability. Thus, 36 Wistar rats were divided in a two-part experiment. In the first part (n=16), the aversive, extinction-resistance memory paradigm was established using a fear-conditionin

Arousal and stress critically regulate memory formation and retention. Increasing levels of stress produce an inverted U-shaped effect on cognitive performance, including the retention of explicit memories, and experiencing a severe stress during a traumatic event may lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The molecular mechanisms underlying the impairing effect of a severe stress on memory and the key contribution of traumatic experiences toward the development of PTSD are still unknown. Here, using increasing footshock intensities in an inhibitory avoidance paradigm, we reproduced the

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-related symptoms including pain, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and malnutrition drive poor quality of life and adverse clinical outcomes in cancer patients. While machine learning (ML) models are increasingly developed to predict these symptoms, existing studies are marked by significant heterogeneity in algorithms, sample sizes, and predictors, and lack quantitative synthesis of model performance, methodological quality, and clinical applicability. This study aimed to comprehensively summarize the characteristics of models and predictors, evaluate the predictive accuracy,
