[Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia: A case report].

Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is an uncommon, non-neoplastic benign fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws, characterized by cementum-like tissue deposition. It primarily affects middle-aged women of African and East Asian descent. Generally asymptomatic, this condition is frequently identified incidentally through radiographs showing radiopacities with radiolucent rims. This report presented a case of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) in a 45-year-old Asian female. The patient exhibited secondary caries extending to the pulp chamber on the left mandibular first molar, showed no signs of pu

Localized gingival recession and leukoplakia associated with nicotine pouch use: two clinical case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine pouches, a tobacco-free alternative to smokeless tobacco, have grown rapidly in popularity since 2019. Despite being marketed as safer than cigarettes, their effects on oral health are poorly documented. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Two otherwise healthy young men presented with localized oral pathology corresponding to habitual nicotine pouch placement. A 22-year-old reported daily pouch use for 11 months at the maxillary canine sites, with clinical findings of isolated gingival recession and leukoplakia. Comprehensive assessment, including periodontal charting, mucosal inspecti

Biomechanical behaviour of tilted abutment after fixed partial denture restoration of CAD/CAM materials.

BACKGROUND: Failure to restore missing teeth in time can easily lead to the mesial tilting of the distal abutment teeth. However, a fixed partial denture (FPD) can improve stress conduction and distribution and prevent periodontal injuries. In these more complex cases, it is necessary to consider various factors comprehensively to improve conventional treatment planning and achieve better results. METHODS: We selected a patient with a missing first molar and a mesial inclination of the second molar, leaving inadequate space or bone mass for implant denture restoration, necessitating an FPD fo

History of chronic periodontitis is a high risk indicator for peri-implant disease.

The success rates in implant dentistry vary significantly among patients presenting previous history of periodontitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate if patients with history of chronic periodontitis (CP) are more susceptible to peri-implant disease (PID) than those without history of CP. Two hundred and fifteen individuals, under periodontal maintenance, presenting 754 osseointegrated implants, were selected for this study. The patients were divided into two groups according to the peri-implant status: Control group (patients without PID; n=129) and PID group (patients with PID; n=86).

Vascular endothelial growth factors and receptors are up-regulated during development of apical periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Apical periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease caused by persistent root canal infection and is characterized by bone resorption. Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) and their receptors (VEGFRs) have been described in many pathologic and inflammatory conditions, but their involvement in the development of apical periodontitis has not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to quantify gene expression and localize VEGF-A, VEGF-C, and VEGF-D and VEGFR-2 and VEGFR-3 in a rat model of apical periodontitis. METHODS: Molar pulps were unilaterally exposed

Heat-killed Lancefieldella Rimae Induces Bone Resorption by Promoting Osteoclast Differentiation.

INTRODUCTION: Apical periodontitis, mainly caused by bacterial infection in the dental pulp, is often accompanied by abscess, periapical inflammation, and alveolar bone loss. Lancefieldella rimae has been detected in the root canals of patients with apical periodontitis. Here, we investigated whether L. rimae is associated with bone resorption. METHODS: L. rimae was anaerobically cultured and heat-killed (HKLr). A mouse calvarial implantation model was used to determine the bone resorption in vivo. Committed osteoclasts prepared from C57BL/6 wild-type or Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2)-deficient

Antibiofilm efficacy of ε-polylysine hydrochloride against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms and its biocompatibility: A promising root canal medicament.

OBJECTIVES: Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) is a predominant pathogen associated with refractory apical periodontitis (RAP), owing to its strong biofilm-forming ability and alkali resistance, which may compromise the antimicrobial efficacy of conventional calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂)-based intracanal medication. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of ε-polylysine hydrochloride (ε-PLH) against E. faecalis within the root canal microenvironment, as well as its cytocompatibility, effects on dentin microhardness, removability, and potential to promote periapic

Evaluation of the Effects of Smoking on Trabecular Bone Microarchitecture Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography in Periodontal Disease.

OBJECTIVES: The quality and structure of alveolar bone play a critical role in periodontal health and disease. Tobacco use has long been associated with negative impacts on bone and periodontal tissues. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine whether smoking induces quantifiable deterioration in trabecular bone microarchitecture in individuals with periodontal disease through bone morphometric analysis of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Ninety systemically healthy patients, comprising both smokers (≥10 cigarettes/day) and non-smokers who required CBCT

Minimally Invasive Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy and Photoactivated Disinfection for the Treatment of Furcation Involvement.

Periodontitis is a biofilm-induced chronic inflammatory disease that, if left untreated, can result in alveolar bone and tooth loss. Intrabony defects and furcation involvement (FI) are particularly difficult to manage, as they often persist after step 1 and step 2 periodontal therapy. In this case, we report a relatively novel therapeutic approach to managing deep furcation involvement in the first mandibular right molar (#46). The concerned area of furcation involvement presented a localized periodontitis with a Silness-Loe plaque index of 3, positive bleeding on probing, gingival recession

Diagnostic terminology: report of an online survey.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic terminology used in endodontics has been based on historical use, textbook and glossary terms, best-available science, and personal conviction. There is minimal evidence that establishes an absolute set of terms that can be used to make a definitive diagnosis. As a component of the Consensus Conference on Diagnostic Terminology held in October 2008, an online survey was conducted to invitees to assess their opinions on diagnosis. METHODS: Thirty-six questions were developed by the oversight committee and chairs of the subcommittees. Most questions used a modified Like

Pretreatment strategies for infection prevention in chemotherapy patients.

It is important to understand the pathogenesis of acute oral infections in patients with chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression in order to develop strategies to prevent such complications. Four distinct oral sites that can either be acutely infected or contribute to acute systemic infection are the oral mucosa, dental pulp and periapical tissues, periodontium, and salivary glands. Many cytotoxic drugs can be directly stomatotoxic to replicating oral mucosa. Once mucosal integrity is affected, secondary acute infection can occur. Even without clinical ulceration, deleterious shifts in the oral

[Research progress in the bidirectional relationship between oral infectious diseases and mental health issues].

Infectious oral diseases represent the most prevalent categories of oral conditions, including dental caries, periodontitis, periapical lesions, and pericoronitis. Their bidirectional relationship with mental health has emerged as a critical interdisciplinary research frontier. This paper integrates epidemiological findings and molecular mechanism evidence to analyze the significant comorbidity and correlation characteristics between infectious oral diseases such as caries and periodontitis, and psychological disorders including depression and anxiety. Oral diseases not only directly impair me

Histologic Study of a Human Immature Permanent Premolar with Chronic Apical Periodontitis after Regenerative Endodontic Procedures.

The histologic outcomes of regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) in humans remain debated, with evidence varying between cementum-/bone-like tissue and true pulp-dentin complex regeneration. Here, we present a case of a 10-year-old girl who underwent REPs for a maxillary premolar (tooth #4) diagnosed as symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with symptomatic apical periodontitis. At the 8-month follow-up, the patient was asymptomatic with radiographic evidence of apical closure and dentinal wall thickening; the tooth was subsequently extracted due to orthodontic indications, along with the soun
