Neonatal near miss (NNM) refers to a newborn who almost died in the neonatal period and is often perceived as part of a spectrum that includes stillbirth and neonatal death. NNM audits might improve recognition of risk factors and substandard care, facilitate benchmarking and inform prevention strategies to improve perinatal outcomes. This review shows that available NNM definitions are inconsistent and vary widely. This is likely to undermine the development of effective prevention strategies and global comparisons. Expert opinion may help reaching a consensus, thus enabling targeting of the

This review synthesises and appraises evidence on the effects of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in pregnancy. We searched bibliographic databases … outcomes and EVD management in pregnant women. The review suggests that EVD has a high maternal and perinatal mortality, underscoring the urgent need for preventative and therapeutic solutions and improved screening and follow-up of pregnant women and newborns during outbreaks. There is not enough evidence to conclusively rule out pregnancy as a risk factor for morta …

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 7,000 newborns die every day, accounting for almost half of child deaths under 5 years of age. Deciphering which neonates are at increased risk for mortality can have an important global impact. As such, integrating high computational technology (e.g., artificial intelligence [AI]) may help identify the early and potentially modifiable predictors of neonatal mortality. Therefore, the objective of this study was to collate, critically appraise, and analyze neonatal prediction studies that included AI.
METHODS: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane, O

AIM: To determine the causes of early neonatal death and the avoidable factors associated with these deaths among women participating in a cluster-randomised crossover trial in Papua New Guinea.
METHODS: Early neonatal deaths were identified by retrospective chart review of the Women and Newborn Trial of Antenatal Interventions and Management study participants between July 2017 and January 2020. Causes of death and avoidable factors were identified using the Perinatal Problem Identification Program system.
RESULTS: There were 35 early neonatal deaths among 2499 livebirths (14 per 1000 birth

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to find clues to improve perinatal outcomes in the case of cerebrovascular acute disorders during pregnancy.
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed 35 cases of cerebrovascular diseases related to maternal deaths in Japan those that occurred during pregnancy and reported to the Committee of the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare from 2010 to 2018.
RESULTS: Cerebrovascular acute disorders occurred at 34.6 ± 6.6 gestational weeks. There were seven intrauterine fetal deaths (IUFD), and eight cases showed neonatal asphyxia with umbilical arterial pH between 6.7 and 7.0

INTRODUCTION: Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is associated with a high risk of perinatal mortality and morbidity if not treated. However, the optimal timing and management in case of early (occurring < 18 weeks) TTTS has not been established yet.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a systematic review and meta-analysis aiming at evaluating the outcomes of monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies complicated by early (ie before 18 weeks) TTTS according to different management options (expectant, laser therapy, amnioreduction or cord occlusion). The primary outcome was mortality, including…

Obesity is increasing; in the UK, almost 20% of pregnant women have a body mass index (BMI) of ≥30 kg/m(2). Obese mothers have increased risks of pregnancy complications including miscarriage, congenital anomaly, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, macrosomia, induction of labour, caesarean section, anaesthetic and surgical complications, post-partum haemorrhage, infection and venous thromboembolism. Complications tend to be greater in those with the highest BMIs. In recent triennia, obesity (27-29%) was over-represented in maternal mortality figures. Strategies to reduce morbidity and mortal

AIM: The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for perinatal deaths in Pakistan, where perinatal mortality is still very high.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted in Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital, Karachi from 1 May 2006 to 30 April 2008. During this period, all perinatal deaths and each live infant delivered following every perinatal death (which were taken as controls) were enrolled. Demographic information, birthweight, booking status, associated obstetric risk factors, stillbirth or neonatal death and the cause of death were recorded. …

OBJECTIVE: The object of this study was to use an in-depth peer-review process to determine the maternal mortality ratio at a single urban perinatal center and to identify factors associated with fatal outcomes to elucidate opportunities for preventive measures to reduce the maternal mortality ratio.
STUDY DESIGN: Between 1992 and 1998 all maternal deaths occurring within our perinatal network were identified. A peer-review committee was established to review all available data for each death to determine the underlying cause of death, whether it was related to pregnancy, and whether the deat

AIM: To determine the rates of multiple gestation, stillbirth, and perinatal and neonatal mortality and to determine health care system characteristics related to perinatal mortality of these pregnancies in low- and middle-income countries.
METHODS: Pregnant women residing within defined geographic boundaries located in six countries were enrolled and followed to 42 days postpartum.
RESULTS: Multiple gestations were 0.9% of births. Multiple gestations were more likely to deliver in a health care facility compared with singletons (70 and 66%, respectively, p < 0.001), to be attended by skille…

RESULTS: A total of 133 continuing, non-conjoined twin monoamniotic pregnancies with delivery information were identified. Perinatal loss per 2-week i…

A comparison of twin deliveries from 1966 to 1971 (140 = 1,23%) and from 1972 to 1974 (65 = 1,07%) indicates a decrease of the uncorrected perinatal mortality from 10,35% to 6,15% caused by early diagnosis, gestation prolonging measures, diagnosis of placental insufficiency and management of delivery. Concerning the first twin the decrease of perinatal mortality was more evident from 7,86% to 1,54% compared with the second twin from 12,86% to 10,77%. Nevertheless the following statement can be made: up to 1971 perinatal mortality was mainly a problem of prematurely born infants; it is changed …

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the causes of perinatal death and related factors from the perspective of forensic medicine, and to provide references for reducing perinatal mortality and guidance for forensic identification.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 102 cases of perinatal autopsy with clinical data from the Department of Forensic Medicine of Chongqing Medical University in 2004-2016.
RESULTS: Of the 102 cases of perinatal deaths, 66 (64.71%) were neonatal deaths, 24 (23.53%) were stillborn foetuses, and 12 (11.76%) were stillbirths. Among the 66 neonatal death cases, 39 (59…

My brief is to discuss maternal diabetes and its implications for birth defects. The perinatal mortality in Britain has fallen in the last 70 years from 60 per 1000 live births to less than 10. For the baby of the diabetic mother there has been a more dramatic decrease from 249 per thousand live births reported by Peel and Oakley in 1949 to approximately 30 in the Swedish cohort in 1993. However even in countries such as Sweden with one of the lowest figures there is still a three fold higher perinatal mortality for the baby of the diabetic mother compared with the background population. There…
