Carbamazepine is a psychiatric pharmaceutical widely detected in aquatic environments. Due to its generalized occurrence and environmental persistence it might be considered as an anthropogenic pollution indicator. In this research, a previously developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), based on a commercial monoclonal antibody, was applied to the quantification of carbamazepine in ground, surface and wastewaters and results were validated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The performance of the applied ELISA methodology was tested in the presence of high

Climate change, toxic pollution, and social inequities are converging to create new risks for workers and communities, particularly in the Global South. Yet occupational and environmental health research and policy still tend to address these stressors in isolation, not considering their interactions. To synthesize the main messages of the COP30 side event, "Amazon and Heat: Community-First Climate-Environment-Health Action from the Amazon Basin to Africa and Europe", presented in the context of the LIMA2025 Conference on Occupational Medicine, and to propose a framework for integrated climate

Background: Cephalosporins, widely used β-lactam antibiotics, are becoming significant environmental pollutants, primarily due to their high use and persistence. They are released into the environment mainly through wastewater treatment plants, agricultural runoff, and hospital discharge, with particularly high concentrations recorded in effluents. Conventional wastewater treatment methods have inadequate removal efficiency, while advanced treatments, such as ozonation, activated carbon adsorption, and advanced oxidation processes, although more efficient, may produce toxic by-products. Recent

Lipid-lowering drugs such as gemfibrozil (GFB) are widely used and highly biologically active, contributing to their persistence in wastewater and subsequent release into aquatic ecosystems. However, the potential impacts and toxic mechanisms of these emerging pollutants on non-target marine organisms, particularly keystone bivalves like Mytilus edulis, remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of GFB (25 µg l-1) on oxidative, nitrosative, and dicarbonyl stress in M. edulis, and explored how abiotic stressors

Immune system responses in fish are considered as suitable and sensitive biomarkers for monitoring aquatic pollution. However, a clear knowledge gap persists in the literture on the immunotoxic potential of engineered nanoparticles toward aquatic organisms such as fish. Employing major enzymatic- (glutathione reductase, GR; glutathione peroxidase, GPX; glutathione sulfo-transferase, GST; catalase, CAT) and thiol- (non-protein thiols, NP-SH; total glutathione, TGSH)-based defense biomarkers, this study assessed the response of phagocytes isolated from peritoneum (P-phagocytes), gill (G-phagocyt

BACKGROUND: Specific characteristics of particulate matter (PM) responsible for associations with respiratory health observed in epidemiological studies are not well established. High correlations among, and differential measurement errors of, individual components contribute to this uncertainty.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated which characteristics of PM have the most consistent associations with acute changes in respiratory function in healthy volunteers.
METHODS: We used a semiexperimental design to accurately assess exposure. We increased exposure contrast and reduced correlations among PM c

The perfluoalkyl substance (PFASs) perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been widely used in industry. However, PFOS is a persistent organic pollutant and has been gradually replaced by its short-chain analogs, perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS). PFASs are extremely persistent and are very frequently detected among the general population. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected PFASs on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and the mechanisms of their action. PBMCs were exposed to PFOS, PFBS and PFHxS at concentrations ranging from 0

Mosquitoes are the primary vectors that transmit diseases affecting humans. Chemical interventions for mosquito management have caused harm to humans, beneficial organisms, and the environment. Hence, researchers are diverting their interest to comparatively safer botanicals. The tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is known to contain nicotine and other diverse bioactive phytochemicals with insecticidal properties. The current study aims to repurpose nicotine-containing cigarette butt waste (CBW), a widespread environmental pollutant that poses ecological and economic challenges due to its pe

BACKGROUND, AIM AND SCOPE: Toxicity testing has become a suitable tool for wastewater evaluation included in several reference documents on best available techniques of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive. The IPPC Directive requires that for direct dischargers as well as for indirect dischargers, the same best available techniques should be applied. Within the study, the whole effluent assessment approach of OSPAR has been applied for determining persistent toxicity of indirectly discharged wastewater from the metal surface treatment industry.

The role of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in ecosystem sustainability, particularly in ecosystems under antibiotic pollution, remains underexplored. These genes exist even in environments free from antibiotic contamination, highlighting their potential ecological roles. For example, what roles do ARGs play in stabilizing microbial communities under stress, particularly due to antibiotics, with respect to microbial diversity and functions, including nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition? This review studied the interconnections between ARGs and microbial communities, looking

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are endocrine-disrupting persistent organic pollutants (POPs) used as flame retardants in a wide range of commercial applications. We have previously reported neurobehavioral and metabolic reprogramming produced by developmental PBDEs. PBDEs perturb the microbiome, an influencer of life-long health, while probiotic supplementation with Limosilactobacillus reuteri (LR) can avert neurobehavioral and endocrine disruption. We, therefore, tested the hypothesis that perinatal maternal LR supplementation would protect gut microbiome richness and diversity, devel…

Oily seafood is an important food source which contains several key nutrients beneficial for human health. On the other hand, oily seafood also contains persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including the dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like-polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), potentially detrimental to human health. For a comprehensive comparison of the beneficial and potentially adverse health effects of seafood consumption, risk-benefit analyses are necessary. Risk-benefit analyses require reliable quantitati…

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological cohort studies have consistently found associations between long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution and a range of morbidity and mortality endpoints. Recent evaluations by the World Health Organization and the Global Burden of Disease study have suggested that these associations may be nonlinear and may persist at very low concentrations. Studies conducted in North America in particular have suggested that associations with mortality persisted at concentrations of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) well below current ai

Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) is a persistent organic pollutant widely present in the environment and resistant todegradation. In recent years, due to its extensive use in industrial production and consumer products, PFDA continuously accumulates in organisms and has become a global public health concern. Although epidemiological data suggest a possible association between PFDA and various cancer risks, its specific carcinogenic mechanism, particularly in colorectal cancer development, remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of environmentally relevant concentrat

As a class of persistent organic pollutant, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated and methoxylated derivatives (OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs) have been widely detected in soil environments. However, studies on the bioavailability and transformation of PBDEs and their derivatives in soil organisms remain scarce. In this study, a detailed kinetic investigation on the accumulation and biotransformations of BDE-47, 6-MeO-BDE-47 and 6-OH-BDE-47 in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) exposed to artificially contaminated soils was conducted. The uptake and elimination kinetics of BDE-47, 6-

Phenolic derivatives are among the most important contaminants present in the environment. These compounds are used in several industrial processes to manufacture chemicals such as pesticides, explosives, drugs and dyes. They also are used in the bleaching process of paper manufacturing. Apart from these sources, phenolic compounds have substantial applications in agriculture as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. However, phenolic compounds are not only generated by human activity, but they are also formed naturally, e.g., during the decomposition of leaves or wood. As a result of these

The effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on humans and biodiversity are multiple and varied. Nowadays environmentally-friendly pesticides are strongly preferred to POPs. It is noteworthy that the crop protection role of pesticides and other techniques, i.e. biopesticides, plant extracts, prevention methods, organic methods, evaluation of plant resistance to certain pests under an integrated pest management (IPM), could improve the risks and benefits which must be assessed on a sound scientific basis. For this directive it is crucial to bring about a significant reduction in the use …

Industrial benthic systems are major reservoirs of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) derived from industrial discharges, urban runoff, wastewater effluents, and maritime activities. This study quantified polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalate esters (PAEs), and alkylphenols (APs) in sediments and benthic crustaceans from Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan, and evaluated the factors controlling their distribution, bioaccumulation, and associated risks. Outside-harbor sediments exhibited ΣPAH, ΣPAE, and ΣAP concentrations ranging from 2.27 to 230, 25.4 to 340, and 1.40 to 72.8 ng g⁻¹ dw,

2-Ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS), homomenthyl salicylate (HMS), and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC) are three commonly used organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) that exhibit environmental persistence and bioaccumulation potential. They are widely distributed in surface water, wastewater, sediment, soil, air, and dust, as well as in organisms. Their concentrations vary significantly across matrices, spatiotemporal scales, and species. In surface water, the concentrations of the three OUVFs are notably higher in industrial and tourist-influenced waters, with the mean concentration of HMS reaching
