Three different groups of therapy leavers and current residents (total n = 80) from Dovegate Prison's Therapeutic Community (TC) were compared on various demographic, criminogenic and psychometric attributes. Statistically significant findings distinguished the leaver groups from current residents and differentiated between type of leavers. Those leavers judged as unsuitable for therapy were characterised by high scores of Psychopathy, Neuroticism, Criminality, Addiction, Venturesomeness, and Avoidant and Schizoid Personality Disorders. Those leavers who had elected to leave the TC were more l

PURPOSE: Birthing individuals with personality disorder in young adulthood before pregnancy may be at increased risk of potentially modifiable adverse outcomes in the perinatal period that impact parental and child health. We aimed to investigate the perinatal psychosocial outcomes of preconception (prior to pregnancy) personality disorder.
METHODS: Prospective analysis of 398 birthing individuals with 609 infants from Victorian Intergenerational Health Cohort Study (VIHCS). Preconception personality disorder was measured using the Standardised Assessment of Personality (SAP) at age 24. A ran

Autistic people face many barriers to receiving an autism diagnosis. Often, they may be misdiagnosed with borderline personality disorder instead. For our study, we interviewed 10 autistic adults who had previously been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. This helped us to better understand their experiences. They explained how borderline personality disorder is quite stigmatised and may suggest that people are to blame for their differences in behaviour. They found the treatments they had to try for borderline personality disorder to be harmful. For example, these treatments promo

Dimensional models of personality, such as the five-factor model (FFM), have demonstrated strong coherence with the presentation of personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD). Given that select personality trait elevations have been linked to impairments in multiple life domains across diagnostic groups, we sought to replicate findings from a previous investigation of the utility of the FFM in predicting BPD-relevant outcomes (i.e., negative affect intensity and instability, impulsivity, and interpersonal disagreements) in the daily lives of those with BPD (Hepp et

OBJECTIVE: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been able to transform HIV infection into a chronic disease. However, ART adherence remains an important barrier and personality traits have been postulated as a factor to be considered. This study aims to identify personality traits that can affect ART adherence, taking into account other potentially influencing factors.
METHODS: Case-control study. Controls and cases were classified using the percentage ART dispensation as recorded in the Hospital Pharmacy database. Controls were defined as people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) with percentage ART d

BACKGROUND: Many studies have reported associations between prenatal stress and the development of psychotic, anxiety and depressive disorders; however, to date no studies have investigated potential associations with personality disorders.
AIMS: This study investigated potential associations between exposure to prenatal stress and personality disorder in offspring.
METHOD: In a subsample (N = 3626) of a large Finnish birth cohort, we used logistic regression models to examine associations between self-reported maternal stress during pregnancy, collected monthly during antenatal clinic appoi

BACKGROUND: Prior anxiety and depression have been identified as risk factors for maternal perinatal mental health problems, but other preconception mental disorders have not been prospectively examined. This study investigated prospectively whether women with preconception personality disorder have increased rates of antenatal anxiety and/or depressive symptoms.
METHODS: 244 women in a population cohort were assessed for personality disorder at age 24 using the Standardised Assessment of Personality. Five to twelve years later, women were screened with the Clinical Interview Schedule, Revise

I will argue in this commentary that it is premature to change the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition approach toward diagnosing personality disorders to the alternative model for personality disorders (AMPD) because such a change in determining personality pathology will be disruptive, and such a disruption is warranted only when it can be demonstrated that patient outcomes are better. I briefly review studies comparing unstructured clinical evaluations with semistructured interviews for symptom disorders, and these studies have found that there is a high rat

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify personality traits and psychiatric comorbidities associated with a lifetime history of a suicide attempt in women with bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHOD: Data from two samples of women with BN (n = 204 and n = 133) were examined. Participants in both samples completed the Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology-Basic Questionnaire and reported whether they had ever had a lifetime suicide attempt. Comorbid psychopathology was based on self-reported questionnaire and interview data. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyse

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a stage of development with increased risk of drug use. Individual personality traits are among those factors that influence the onset of substance use in adolescence and its psychiatric comorbidity. Little research has been done on the comorbidity between substance abuse risk and Asperger syndrome, and none specifically in adolescence. The objective of this study is to assess the risk of drug use by adolescents with Asperger syndrome and compare it with that risk in control subjects. A secondary objective was to analyze the personality factors that may be associated

Assessment of hypnotizability is useful in research and predicting the effects of hypnosis in clinical practice. There are few contemporary scientific reports examining the relationship between hypnotizability and psychopathological personality dimensions. The current study explores the connections between abnormal personality in psychiatric patients and the hypnotizability level. Fifty-five patients with anxiety and personality disorders who previously completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) were invited to undergo the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale - Clinical Form

Background The assessment and treatment of patients with a personality disorder have made considerable progress during the last decades. Unfortunately, this progress is often limited to patients with a personality disorder in general. Patients with a personality disorder who also fulfil criteria for a severe mental illness (SMI-PD) profit less. Aim To describe the relationship between contemporary paradigms about personality disorders and the current treatment practices of patients with SMI-PD, and to assess the added value of the recently introduced paradigm epistemic trust and distrust. OBJECTIVE: Clinical and pre-clinical data suggest the possibility of a facilitory role for norepinephrine (NE) in impulsive-aggressive behavior. While clinical studies have focused on putative central measures of NE activity, few studies have been published using peripheral measures. In this study, the relationship between plasma free NE metabolite, plasma free 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (pMHPG), and impulsive aggression was explored in subjects with personality disorder.
METHODS: Subjects were 30 male subjects with personality disorder in whom basal plasma free MHPG concentrations were

Most opiate users are injection drug users (IDUs). A significant percentage of IDUs have antisocial personality disorder (APD). APD has been found by some researchers to be an additional risk factor for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in IDUs. The present study evaluated the association of sociodemographic characteristics, substance abuse history, and several measures of antisociality including the DSM-III-R diagnosis made by the Personality Disorder Examination, the California Psychological Inventory-Socialization Scale, and Hare's Revised Psychopathy Checklist, to behaviors asso

The relationship between premorbid personality and schizophrenic symptoms assessed by the Scales for the Assessment of Positive and Negative Symptoms was explored in 115 DSM-III-R schizophrenics. The frequencies of normal, schizoid-schizotypal and other DSM-III-R personality disorders were 44%, 39% and 17%. Affective flattening and alogia were significantly more frequently present and severe in the schizoid-schizotypal group than in the rest of the patients. There were no differences in positive symptoms. It is suggested that, in some cases, negative symptoms are merely the persistence or exac

Agreeableness is central to the 5-factor model conceptualization of dependency. However, 4 meta-analyses of the relationship of agreeableness with dependency have failed to identify a consistent relationship. It was the hypothesis of the current study that these findings might be due in part to an emphasis on the assessment of adaptive, rather than maladaptive, variants of agreeableness. This hypothesis was tested by using experimentally altered NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (Costa & McCrae, 1992) items that were reversed with respect to their implications for maladaptiveness. The predicte

An interpretive approach to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), based on a psychodynamic conceptual system, is presented. Scale elevations and configurations on the MMPI are viewed as reflecting the following dimensions of personality: (a) characteristic security and defense operations, (b) capacity to manage or tolerate anxiety, c) characteristic ways of dealing with aggression and hostility, d) stability of reality contact, e) quality of object relations, and f) level of psychopathology. Various MMPI profile configurations, and empirical research findings where applicable

BACKGROUND: Zuckerman-Kuhlman-Aluja Personality questionnaire (ZKA-PQ) measures five psychobiologically based personality factors (activity, aggression, extraversion, neuroticism, and sensation seeking). The inner strength (from the ten perfections based on Theravada Buddhism) deems positive character, which includes truthfulness, perseverance, wisdom, generosity, morality (five precepts), mindfulness and meditation, patience and endurance, equanimity, determination, and loving kindness measured by the strength-based inventory (SBI). Our aim was to unfold the relationship between ZKA factors a

Multiple reviews and meta-analyses have identified the low pole of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) Agreeableness (also called Antagonism) as the primary domain-level personality correlates of aggression across self-report and behavioral methodologies. In the current study, we expand on this literature by investigating the relations between FFM facets and aggressive behavior as measured by laboratory competitive reaction time tasks (CRTTs). Across three samples (total N = 639), we conducted weighted mean analyses, multiple regression analyses, and dominance analyses to determine which FFM facets we
