To explain the persistence of schizophrenia in human populations at relatively high and constant rates, it is proposed that the schizoid-paranoid personality (designated as the Odyssean personality) which characterizes so many nonpsychotic relatives of schizophrenics, represents a selective advantage. It is assumed that odyssean relatives carry the gene or genes predisposing to schizophrenia, but not in sufficient quantity for the development of the psychosis. It is suggested that because of their schizoid-paranoid out-look, Odysseans have an increased probability of contributing to the gene p

Psychonalytic and Piagetian findings are bridged by understanding character structure. Social cognition of the three character types corresponds to three phase of cognitive development: Symbolic, Intuitive, and (Concrete) Operational. A child constructs his supergo by coordinating his perceptions of his caretaking as he coordinates other perceptions in the Operational Period.

Background/Objectives: This study aimed to examine personality profiles at the intrapsychic level ("Oneself") in adult and older patients with cancer and to compare potential differences between these age groups. Methods: In this observational, cross-sectional comparative study, 273 patients with cancer (all disease stages) were categorized into two age groups: adults (40-64 years, n = 141) and older adults (≥65 years, n = 132). Personality was assessed using the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) Form-A. Descriptive and inferential bivariate statistical analyses, including Chi-squa

The relationship between the experience of childhood adversity (CA) and the development of personality disorders (PDs) has been well documented. The dimensional PD alternative model (AMPD) has been introduced in nosography in 2013, and so far it is been used for CA research mostly on non-clinical samples. We included in our study 137 psychiatric outpatients who were screened for history of maternal antipathy (MA), paternal antipathy (PA), maternal neglect (MN), paternal neglect (PN), maternal physical abuse (MPA), paternal physical abuse (PPA) and sexual abuse (SA) using the Childhood Experien

PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study aimed to compare the personality traits of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) with those of healthy individuals. The goal was to gain insight into the potential impact of personality traits on the development and manifestation of mood disorders.
METHODS: One hundred seventy-eight patients with mood disorders were analyzed as either MDD or BD, with each group containing euthymic and depressive members: e-MDD, d-MDD, e-BD, and d-BD. Mood status was assessed using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and the 17-item Hamilto

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is widely considered the premier leader development institution in the United States. Since first admitting women in 1976, few studies have examined factors that may influence female cadets to perform as leaders in this environment. The present study analyzed archival data collected during a unique longitudinal study of leader development conducted at West Point during the years 1993-2000, the Baseline Officer Leader Development Study (BOLDS). Personality hardiness, transformational and transactional leadership styles were evaluated as potential predicto

A number of recent advances in eating disorders research have helped clarify the nature of risk for the development of such disorders. Culbert et al. () provide an empirical and thoughtful review of these recent advances. The authors identified empirically established risk factors in each of several categories of risk for eating disorders: genetic influences, neurotransmitter activity, hormones, personality, and sociocultural influences. We highlight three implications of their review. First, the review can serve as an important asset to eating disorder researchers, both substantively, by prov

The presentation of the analysis of a five-and-a-half-year-old girl highlighted a personality configuration with multiple fixation points (some preoedipal) organized around an early phallic structure. The sequence of this analysis underscored characteristics of the early phallic phase of development as a transitional phase between dyadic and triadic and preoedipal and oedipal levels. The term dyadic-phallic was introduced to emphasize the special feature of this phase. A phallic drive-organization is on the ascendancy while object constancy is not yet sufficiently consolidated to permit the sh

The incidence of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in psychiatric care has shown growing tendencies. Despite its frequency, it is an underdiagnosed disease. Profound knowledge of etiological factors of BPD is essential for the proper diagnosis and treatment. The present study aims to provide a developmental psychopathological analysis of borderline personality disorder, which includes a thorough review of genetic and environmental etiological factors, an introduction to the functionalist approach of evolutionary perspective, and an overview of age specific characteristics of borderline sym

Data from a community-based longitudinal study were used to investigate whether childhood verbal abuse increases risk for personality disorders (PDs) during adolescence and early adulthood. Psychiatric and psychosocial interviews were administered to a representative community sample of 793 mothers and their offspring from two New York State counties in 1975, 1983, 1985 to 1986, and 1991 to 1993, when the mean ages of the offspring were 5, 14, 16, and 22 years, respectively. Data regarding childhood abuse and neglect were obtained from the psychosocial interviews and from official New York Sta

Measures of temperament and early environment were obtained from 108 patients with major depression using the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI). TPQ and PBI measures distinguished between depressed patients and controls. Depressed patients with comorbid axis I disorders appear to be temperamentally different from those who do not have these disorders. Those with alcoholism have higher novelty seeking (NS) scores; those with panic disorder have higher harm avoidance (HA) scores; and those with simple phobia have higher persistence (P) scores. M

Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is a severe personality disorder with robust associations with crime and violence, but its precise etiology is unknown. Drawing on near-population of federal correctional clients in the Midwestern United States, the current study examined antecedent background factors spanning adverse childhood experiences and childhood psychopathology. Greater adverse childhood experiences were associated with ASPD diagnosis with physical abuse showing associations with ASPD symptoms and sexual abuse with lifetime diagnosis for ASPD. Conduct Disorder was strongly linked

In this article I examine the advancement of therapeutic penality in the UK, a penal philosophy that reimagines prison policy, practices and environments utilising psychological knowledge. Adopting a historical approach, I show how modern therapeutic penality is linked to the emergence of personality science in the nineteenth century and the development of the democratic therapeutic community (DTC) model in the twentieth century. I outline how at the turn of the twenty-first century a catalytic event generated a moral panic that led the British government to mobilise psychological knowledge an

BACKGROUND: While research has explored the connection between addiction and personality, no systematic study has examined how substance use disorders (SUD) and behavioral addictions specifically relate to the HEXACO model of personality. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to fill this gap by investigating the association between HEXACO personality traits and various addictions, including illegal substances (e.g., narcotics and cannabis) and behavioral addictions (e.g., gambling, gaming, social media addiction, and compulsive sexual behavior disorder) across different populations.

In order to get information about the premorbid personality of patients with endogenous psychosis, we examined the adjective check list of von Zerssen with regard to form and content on a sample of 126 schizophrenic and 31 affective-psychotic patients. The data gathering occured through retrospective evaluation by a close relative of each patient. One aim of the study was the development of a psychometric instrument in order to construct clinically relevant scales, which would allow us to objectify characterizations of the premorbid personality of patients with psychic illness. Another aim was

Patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) often suffer from pheochromocytoma and hypoglycaemia and are vulnerable to disorders associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), such as major depressive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorder, etc. Features of pheochromocytoma even overlap with features of anxiety disorders, panic disorders, etc. These patients undergo multiple major surgeries under general anaesthesia at a very young age due to recurrent tumours that can affect their behavioural and emotional development. Childhood experiences of violence can lead to severe psychological consequences. One of them is an increased risk of abnormal personality development. It can manifest as rigid negativistic beliefs about the self, others, and the surrounding world, which some specialists term early maladaptive schemas. The conducted study aims to provide a possible explanation of the role dissociation plays in the process of forming early maladaptive schemas. The study was conducted on 342 adult women whose biographies contained one or more episodes of potentially traumatic experiences of violence in childhood.…

The alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD) included in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) reconceptualized personality pathology in terms of pathological traits and impairments in functioning. For example, the construct of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) was reconceptualized via the traits of rigid perfectionism as well as at least 2 of perseveration, intimacy avoidance, and restricted affectivity. We review the literature to summarize how effectively the legacy construct of OCPD is captured by the AMPD. We

The aim of the study is to assess a mediational pathway, which includes patients' sex, personality traits, age of onset of gambling disorder (GD) and gambling-related variables. The South Oaks Gambling Screen, the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R) and the Temperament and Character Inventory-R were administered to a large sample of 1632 outpatients attending a specialized outpatient GD unit. Sociodemographic variables were also recorded. A Structural Equation Model was adjusted to assess the pathway. Age of onset mediated between personality profile (novelty seeking and self-transcendence) and GD se
