Discrimination of former depressed patients from healthy volunteers on the basis of stable personality traits assessed by means of KSP.

A total of 208 former depressed patients were investigated by means of the personality inventory KSP and compared to 75 healthy volunteers who had never had an affective episode. By means of discriminant analysis 81.3% of the subjects could be correctly classified as former depressed patients or healthy volunteers. When patients in the diagnostic subgroups, unipolars, bipolars, patients with neurotic-reactive depressions and patients with unspecified depressions were compared to healthy volunteers, 85.4%, 83.0%, 84.2% and 86.4% respectively could be correctly classified. The main personality t…

Depression after myocardial infarction.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory was completed by 101 patients 16 to 18 months after a proved myocardial infarction. The data suggested a bimodal distribution of patients. One class of patients had a relatively "normal" personality score apart from a tendency to hypomania. The second class had severe depression, with associated hysteria, hypochondriasis and psychasthenia. The severely depressed patients were older, with a greater tendency to hypertension and angina, and a tendency to smaller gains in aerobic power despite an equal intensity of endurance training. The distinction…

"It's not you, it's me": identity disturbance as the main contributor to interpersonal problems in pathological narcissism.

BACKGROUND: Core impairments in self and other functioning typify individuals with personality disorder. While interpersonal dysfunction is a known element of narcissistic disorders, empirical research investigating intrapersonal elements is lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the internal representations of individuals with grandiose and vulnerable features, as manifested through their attachment styles, and the specific role of identity disturbance in explaining the relationship between pathological narcissism and maladaptive interpersonal functioning. METHODS: A sample of 270

Insomnia, Time Perspective, and Personality Traits: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Non-Clinical Population.

Insomnia disorder is considered a public health problem and additional studies should investigate predisposing and perpetuating factors. This study examined the relationship between Big Five personality traits, time perspective, and insomnia. In a cross-sectional study, 400 participants (227 women; age range 18-74 years) were administered the Big Five Inventory-10 items, the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). A measure of chronotype was also included for control purposes. The results show that insomniacs reported lower scores for conscientiousness and e

Externalizing and internalizing subtypes of posttraumatic psychopathology and anger expression.

Subtypes of posttraumatic psychopathology were replicated and extended in 254 female veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Cluster analyses on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 and Personality Psychopathology Five scales (Harkness, McNulty, & Ben-Porath, ) yielded internalizing and externalizing psychopathology dimensions, with a third low psychopathology group (simple PTSD). Externalizers were higher than the internalizers and the simple PTSD groups on the antisocial, substance, and aggression scales; internalizers were higher on depression and anxiety scales. Furthe…

Specificity of the CAARS in Discriminating ADHD Symptoms in Adults From Other Axis I Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined the sensitivity and specificity of the Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale-Self-Report: Long Version (CAARS) in 113 adult clinical archival records. METHOD: Forty-five clients had requested evaluation for ADHD, suggesting problems with attention, and 68 requested other services. To examine the CAARS' ability to differentiate ADHD symptoms from other Axis I symptoms, it was compared with the Personality Assessment Inventory. RESULTS: The two groups differed significantly on the weighted linear combination of the eight subscales of the CAARS, Wilks's Lambda =

Disinhibition domain and facets uniquely predict changes in depressive symptoms and psychosocial functioning.

This study aimed to understand the role of disinhibition (low conscientiousness)-in conjunction with the other major personality traits of negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism, and psychoticism-in predicting changes in depressive symptoms and psychosocial functioning. Both the disinhibition trait domain and its primary facets (i.e., irresponsibility, impulsivity, and distractibility) were examined. In a large sample (Time 1 N = 605, Time 2 N = 497) of psychiatric outpatients and high-risk community residents, personality traits, depressive symptoms (both self-reported and interviewer-r

Coping Skills in Pre- and Early Adolescents: The Role of Temperament and Character.

Coping skills represent cognitive, emotional, and behavioral resources to overcome developmental challenges and tasks. Based on Cloninger's model of personality, the main aim of this study was to analyze the relation among temperament, character, and coping skills in nonclinical pre- and early adolescents by also considering adolescents' gender and age. One hundred and thirty-eight Italian pre- and early adolescents (52.2% boys and 47.8% girls), aged between 10-14 years (M = 12.33 ± 0.87 SD), filled out the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory and the Children's Coping Strategies Checkli

The role of fearless dominance in psychopathy: confusions, controversies, and clarifications.

Based on their 2011 meta-analysis of the correlates of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI), Miller and Lynam (An examination of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory's nomological network: A meta-analytic review, Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment, 3, 305-326) conclude that its Fearless Dominance (PPI-FD) higher-order dimension exhibits weak construct validity, leading them to question the relevance of boldness to the conceptualization and assessment of psychopathy. We examine their assertions in light of the clinical, conceptual, and empirical literatures on psyc…

Fearless dominance and psychopathy: a response to Lilienfeld et al.

We respond to criticisms raised by Lilienfeld et al. (2012, The role of fearless dominance in psychopathy: Confusions, controversies, and clarifications. We argue that Lilienfeld et al. commit multiple logical and scientific errors throughout their response: minimizing the centrality of antisocial behavior in p…

Can the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale be used to assess trichotillomania? A preliminary report.

Given recent conceptualizations of trichotillomania (TM) as a variant of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), clinician-rated measures of obsessive compulsive symptoms have been adapted for use in the assessment of TM. Although the reliability and validity of these instruments have been well-documented in patients with OCD, psychometric properties have not been examined systematically in patients with TM. Here, we evaluate the reliability and validity of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) in a sample of 11 patients with a primary diagnosis of TM. Data addressed the utility of t

Denial and the discrepancy between heart rate and reported negative affect: a study of convergent and discriminant validity.

This study examined the convergent and divergent validity of heart-rate (HR)-based response discrepancy scores as measures of denial. After standardizing measures of stressor-related anxiety, hostility, and HR, response discrepancy scores were calculated by subtracting each measure of negative affect from the HR value. Analyses revealed the response discrepancy scores to correlate positively with measures of denial, negatively with a measure of trait anger, and to not correlate with measures of the nondefensive need for approval and the positive trait of curiosity. These findings support the c
