[Bipolar disorders and psychiatric comorbidity].

Comorbidity is very frequent in bipolar disorders. The most frequently psychiatric disorders associated with bipolar disorders are substance use disorders (particularly alcohol abuse) and anxiety disorders. Obsessive-compulsive disorder, impulse control disorders, personality disorders and eating disorders co-occur also with bipolar disorder. Comorbidity complicates the diagnosis and the treatment of bipolar disorder and worsen the prognosis. For every bipolar patient, it is necessary to search for a comorbid psychiatric disorder, and vice-versa. There is a noticeable paucity of controlled stu

Psychiatric disorders among adult deliberate self-harm patients and subsequent risk of dying by suicide, mental and behavioural disorders and other external causes.

INTRODUCTION: Deliberate self-harm (DSH) treated in general hospital is a well-established risk factor for suicide and other cause mortality. However, few studies have used population data to investigate the differential impact of specific psychiatric disorders on the risk of subsequent suicide, by sex and age of the patient in the context of previous DSH episodes. METHOD: All patients aged 18 and older treated for DSH in general hospitals during the period 2008-2018 were identified through national registers. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to ascertain the associated risk of de

A topography of psychiatric disorders among correction officers.

This study assessed the nature, scope, and work-related impact of psychiatric disorders among correction officers. It also examined the effect of psychiatric diagnoses on occupational functioning. Medical charts of 1029 correction officers with complaints of psychological distress were reviewed for DSM-III-R diagnoses and duration of disability. Subjects evinced a wide range of psychiatric conditions, accounting for a substantial loss of full-duty workdays. The most frequently observed diagnoses were V Codes, mood and adjustment disorders. The most disabling conditions in terms of duration of

Depressive personality: associations with DSM-III-R mood and personality disorders and negative and positive affectivity, 30-month stability, and prediction of course of Axis I depressive disorders.

The authors addressed 5 issues bearing on the validity of the construct of depressive personality disorder (DPD): its relationship with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., rev.; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) mood and personality disorders and normal personality dimensions of negative and positive affectivity, its stability over 30-months, and its impact on the course of Axis I depressive disorders. Two samples were used: 156 outpatients with mood disorders, personality disorders, or both, and 267 of their 1st-degree relatives. The association between D

Psychiatric Comorbidity Outweighs Headache Subtype As A Predictor Of Disability In Chronic Daily Headache: A Matched-Control Study.

OBJECTIVE: Objective: Chronic daily headache (CDH) is a prevalent neuropsychiatric condition. We aimed to quantify concurrent Axis I psychiatric comorbidity and personality pathology in CDH versus matched controls and identify factors independently associated with headache-related disability. METHOD: This hospital-based matched-control study was conducted at a tertiary teaching hospital in Faridabad (Delhi-NCR), India. Seventy-five ICHD-3-confirmed CDH patients and 75 age- and sex-matched controls completed the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI v5.0), Millon Clinical Multiax

Characterizing Clinical Heterogeneity in a Large Inpatient Addiction Treatment Sample: Confirmatory Latent Profile Analysis and Differential Levels of Craving and Impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) have highly heterogeneous presentations and identifying more homogeneous subgroups may foster more personalized treatment. This study used SUD and other psychiatric indicators to characterize latent subgroups of patients in a large inpatient addiction treatment program. The resulting subgroups were then analyzed with respect to differences on clinically informative motivational mechanisms. METHODS: Patients (n = 803) were assessed for severity of SUD (ie, alcohol use disorder, drug use disorder), post-traumatic stress disorder, anxie

Continuity between DSM-5 Categorical Criteria and Traits Criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) includes a heterogeneous constellation of symptoms operationalized with 9 categorical criteria. As the field of personality disorder (PD) research moves to emphasize dimensional traits in its operationalization, it is important to delineate continuity between the 9 DSM-IV/Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) categorical criteria for BPD and the trait dimensions in DSM-5 Section III. To date, no study has attempted such validation. METHODS: We examined the associations between the 9 categorical DSM-IV/DSM-

Symptomatic overlap between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and borderline personality disorder in women: the role of temperament and character traits.

OBJECTIVE: There is substantial symptomatic overlap between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adults, but the nature of the relationship between these disorders needs further clarification. The role of temperament and character traits in the differentiation of classes of patients with similar ADHD and BPD symptom profiles was examined and possible pathways between early temperament and future ADHD and/or BPD were hypothesized. METHODS: Structured diagnostic interviews were conducted in 103 female patients to assess current Diagnostic

Expert opinions about the ICD-10 category of enduring personality change after catastrophic experience.

The inclusion of enduring personality change after catastrophic experience (EPCACE) as a diagnostic category in the ICD-10 represents a turning point in the evolution of the nosology of traumatic stress syndromes, yet many aspects of the diagnosis remain contentious. Given the absence of published research concerning this category, an exploratory survey of international experts was conducted using a questionnaire focusing on key aspects of the category, namely whether respondents used the diagnosis of EPCACE in their practice; which features were most salient in making a diagnosis of posttraum

The nature of social anxiety disorder.

The essential feature of social anxiety disorder (social phobia) is a fear of scrutiny by other people in social or performance situations. The level of anxiety experienced by the person with social anxiety disorder is excessive, and results in substantial impairment in the sufferer's social, family, and professional life. Three distinct subtypes of the disorder have been identified: generalized social anxiety disorder, in which the individual fears a multitude of social situations; nongeneralized social anxiety disorder, in which only 2 or 3 situations are feared; and public-speaking phobia.

Phobic, panic, and major depressive disorders and the five-factor model of personality.

This study investigated five-factor model personality traits in anxiety (simple phobia, social phobia, agoraphobia, and panic disorder) and major depressive disorders in a population-based sample. In the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area Follow-up Study, psychiatrists administered the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry to 333 adult subjects who also completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. All of the disorders except simple phobia were associated with high neuroticism. Social phobia and agoraphobia were associated with low extraversion. In addition, lower-order f

Effectiveness of Pharmacological Treatments for Adult ADHD on Psychiatric Comorbidity: A Systematic Review.

Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults is frequently accompanied by psychiatric comorbidities that worsen outcomes and complicate treatment. Pharmacological management is central in care, yet its impact on co-occurring disorders remains uncertain. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of commonly prescribed medications for adult ADHD (methylphenidate, atomoxetine, bupropion, and lisdexamfetamine) on comorbid mood, anxiety, personality, and substance use disorders. Tricyclic antidepressants were also included in the search strategy; however, no eligib

The comorbidity of multiple personality disorder and DSM-III-R axis II disorders.

Our ability to differentiate MPD from DSM-III-R Axis I disorders has become increasingly refined. Differentiation of MPD from the Axis II personality disorders is an area of more recent clinical investigation. MPD can be found comorbidity with many other psychiatric conditions. It is found in association with each of the DSM-III-R personality disorders. At the present time, however, we lack research data that define the prevalence of the comorbidity of MPD with the personality disorders. Objective study of this area is complicated by the paucity of instruments available to assess personality d

Temporary separation from parents in early childhood and serious personality disorders in adult life.

We have previously shown that the temporary separation of Finnish children from both parents during World War II predicted any serious mental, substance use, and personality disorders in adulthood. Here we examine if parental separation is a specific vulnerability factor for any- and dramatic personality disorders relative to other mental disorders. We extracted information on separations from the Finnish National Archives and psychiatric diagnoses from the national Hospital Discharge and Causes of Death-Registers. Of the 12,734 Helsinki Birth Cohort Study participants, 1,717 were separated, 1

Through the lens of psychiatry: A case report, revisiting a character from the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, an Indian scripture.

BACKGROUND: Ancient Indian scriptures often contain detailed depictions of human emotions and behaviour that resonate with modern psychiatric constructs. The Śrīmad Bhāgavatam narrates the story of Dhundhukārī, a character marked by persistent cruelty, deceitfulness, aggression, and self-destructive tendencies, culminating in a fatal outcome consistent with the poor prognosis of untreated Conduct Disorder or Antisocial Personality Disorder, though his eventual liberation complicates a purely western psychiatry prognostic reading. This paper revisits the character through a psychiatric lens and
