[Internalization disorders in children with asthma].

BACKGROUND: The presence of asthma may increase the risk for internalizing disorders such as major depression and anxiety. OBJECTIVE: To determine if the diagnosis of asthma in children is associated with other internalizing disorders such as panic disorder, social phobia, separation anxiety, and total anxiety. METHODS: In this analytical, descriptive and comparative cross sectional study, 144 asthmatic and 144 nonasthmatic patients, with ages between 8 and 17 years, were included. We used the GINA asthma diagnostic criteria. We applied the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for diagnosis

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in adolescence: effects of age and menstrual status on psychological variables.

OBJECTIVE: To compare, in adolescents and adults with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, eating disorder symptomatology and comorbid affective and anxiety states. METHOD: Two hundred fifty consecutive, female inpatients on an eating disorders unit were studied. They were given the Beck Depression Inventory; the Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive, Anxiety, and Phobic Anxiety scales from the Symptom Checklist 90; and the Eating Disorder Inventory. Patients were divided into categories based on age, diagnosis, and menstrual status. RESULTS: Onset of anorexia nervosa before age 14 and primary a

Psychiatric illness and cardiovascular disease risk.

Studies evaluating the risk of cardiovascular disease in the psychiatrically ill yield mixed results. Phobic anxiety in men is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, particularly sudden coronary death. This finding is in need of replication in women, and hypotheses regarding the potential mechanisms for this association warrant pilot testing. Other than this finding, there is only weak evidence supporting an association between psychiatric illness and risk for cardiovascular disease. This is surprising in light of the strong evidence that psychiatric illness in general i

Revisiting MRI Claustrophobia: Incidence, Factors, and Interventions.

Claustrophobia during MRI is a well-documented challenge that affects diagnostic accuracy and patient care. Each year, nearly 2 million MRI scans are disrupted due to anxiety, thus leading to early termination of the scan, image degradation from motion, and increasing healthcare costs. This review examines the prevalence of MRI-related claustrophobia, along with the financial and operational burdens. This review also highlights the latest strategies to improve patient tolerance, which range from technological advancements, behavioral techniques and pharmacological interventions, all of which s

A Novel Hypnotic Intervention for the Treatment of Ornithophobia. A Case Study.

This case study explores the successful treatment of severe ornithophobia in a 25-year-old woman, referred to as Emma, through a novel hypnotic intervention that integrates mindfulness and autogenic training. Emma's chronic fear of pigeons had significantly impacted her professional life. The Severity Measure for Specific Phobia-Adult (SMSP-A) was used to assess her level of phobia pre- and post-intervention, as well as at a 6-month follow-up. Emma's hypnotizability was measured using the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale - Form C (SHSS:C). Following a single hypnotic session, Emma experi

Anticipatory anxiety of seizures in epilepsy: A common, complex, and underrecognized phenomenon?

The diagnosis of epilepsy is associated with loss of predictability, which invariably results in the fear of when and if future seizures will occur. For a subset of patients with epilepsy (PWE), there may be a pathological persistent fear of seizure occurrence, resulting in limitations to daily activities through avoidant behaviors. Paradoxically, the research of anticipatory anxiety of seizures (AAS; also referred to as seizure phobia) has been practically nonexistent and, not surprisingly, this condition remains underrecognized by clinicians. The available data are derived from three small c

Fear of COVID-19, workplace phobia, workplace deviance and perceived organizational support: A moderated mediation model.

This paper aims to test a moderated-mediation model examining therelationships between Fear of COVID-19, workplace phobia, work deviance behaviourand perceived organizational support among hotel employees. An online questionnaire was administered to collect data, to which 481 responded. Data was collected from full-time frontline employees working in the Maldivian hospitality industry. The moderated-mediation model explained 44% of the variance in workplace deviance behaviourscan be predicted bythe fear of COVID-19, perceived organisational support and workplace phobia. Animals evoking fear in the Cradle of Humankind: snakes, scorpions, and large carnivores.

Theories explain the presence of fears and specific phobias elicited by animals in contemporary WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) populations by their evolutionary past in Africa. Nevertheless, empirical data about fears of animals in the Cradle of Humankind are still fragmentary. To fill this gap, we examined which local animals are perceived as the most frightening by Somali people, who inhabit a markedly similar environment and the region where humans have evolved. We asked 236 raters to rank 42 stimuli according to their elicited fear. The stimuli were standar

A randomised controlled test of emotional attributes of a virtual coach within a virtual reality (VR) mental health treatment.

We set out to test whether positive non-verbal behaviours of a virtual coach can enhance people's engagement in automated virtual reality therapy. 120 individuals scoring highly for fear of heights participated. In a two-by-two factor, between-groups, randomised design, participants met a virtual coach that varied in warmth of facial expression (with/without) and affirmative nods (with/without). The virtual coach provided a consultation about treating fear of heights. Participants rated the therapeutic alliance, treatment credibility, and treatment expectancy. Both warm facial expressions (gro

Phobia-specific patterns of cognitive emotion regulation strategies.

Although fear plays a vital role in survival, an overly active threat detection system could be maladaptive due to its negative health consequences. Putatively maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) strategies are a core problem in phobias. In contrast, adaptive ER strategies could help downregulate the emotion elicited by a threatening stimulus and decrease anxiety. Yet, the number of studies directly examining the pattern of ER strategies linked to various phobias is still scarce. Thus, this study sought to map the patterns of adaptive and maladaptive ER strategies linked to the three most comm

The attenuation of spider avoidance action tendencies in spider-fearful individuals and its impact on explicit evaluation of spider stimuli.

Researchers have demonstrated that individuals with heightened levels of spider-fear, as compared to relatively lower levels of spider-fear, are characterised a pattern of action tendencies that facilitates the speed to complete 'avoidance' movements, as compared to 'approach movements, in the face of spider-stimuli. However, research has not determined whether such tendencies are able to be manipulated, and the impact of their manipulation, in individuals with heightened spider-fear. Seventy-one participants who reported relatively high levels of spider-fear completed an action tendency manip

Neural correlates of fear conditioning are associated with treatment-outcomes to behavioral exposure in spider phobia - Evidence from magnetoencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Models of anxiety disorders and the rationale of exposure therapy (ET) are grounded on classical fear conditioning. Yet, it is unclear whether lower fear ratings of conditioned safety versus threat cues and corresponding neural markers of safety-learning and/or fear inhibition assessed before treatment would predict better outcomes of behavioral exposure. METHODS: Sixty-six patients with spider phobia completed pre-treatment clinical and experimental fear conditioning assessments, one session of virtual reality ET, a post-treatment clinical assessment, and a 6-month follow-up asse

Phenomenology and content of the inhaled N, N-dimethyltryptamine (N, N-DMT) experience.

Understanding the phenomenology and content of the inhaled N, N, dimethyltryptamine (N, N-DMT) experience is critical to facilitate and support ongoing research and therapeutic models targeting mental health conditions and central nervous system pathology. A qualitative analysis was conducted of all N, N-DMT experiences posted to the r/DMT Reddit community over a 10-year period from 2009 to 2018. A total of 3778 experiences from 3305 posts were included in this study. A median dose of N, N-DMT of 40.0 mg [interquartile range (IQR), 27.5 to 50.0] and a median experience duration of 10 min (IQR,

The fear of cancer recurrence and progression in patients with pancreatic cancer.

PURPOSE: It is plausible that patients with pancreatic cancer experience fear of tumor recurrence or progression (FOP). The aim of this study was to compare FOP in patients with pancreatic cancer treated with surgical resection, palliative systemic treatment, or best supportive care (BSC) and analyze the association between quality of life (QoL) and FOP and the effect of FOP on overall survival (OS). METHODS: This study included patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer between 2015 and 2018, who participated in the Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Project (PACAP). The association between QoL and WOPS

From protection to non-protection: A mixed methods study investigating movement, posture and recovery from disabling low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Movement and posture are commonly believed to relate to low back pain (LBP). Yet, we know little about how people make sense of the relationship between their LBP, movement and posture, particularly after recovery. We aimed to qualitatively explore this understanding, how it changes and how it relates to quantitative changes. METHODS: A mixed method study in the context of an existing single-case design involving 12 people with disabling non-specific LBP. Interviews were conducted before and after a 12-week physiotherapy-led Cognitive Functional Therapy intervention, and qualitati

Generalization of pain-related avoidance behavior based on de novo categorical knowledge.

People with chronic pain often fear and avoid movements and activities that were never paired with pain. Safe movements may be avoided if they share some semantic relationship with an actual pain-associated movement. This study investigated whether pain-associated operant responses (movements) can become categorically associated with perceptually dissimilar responses, thus motivating avoidance of new classes of safe movements-a phenomenon known as category-based avoidance generalization. Using a robotic arm, 2 groups were trained to categorize arm movements in different ways. Subsequently, the

The negative impact of xenophobia on compassion with suffering out-group members is attenuated by trait empathy.

Empathy enables human beings to understand and share the internal states of others. Studies show that empathy for pain is higher for in-group compared to out-group members. This might be driven by attitudes and biases towards out-groups. In a between subject design, N = 621 participants filled in questionnaires measuring xenophobia and trait empathy and were presented with photos of suffering individuals either from the in-group or an out-group, which had to be rated with respect to negative affect and the willingness to help the depicted persons. Results do not show more compassion with membe

Prevalence, causes, impacts, and management of needle phobia: An international survey of a general adult population.

Needle phobia is an overlooked condition that affects virtually all medical procedures. Our study aimed to identify how commonly needle phobia is experienced, its underlying reasons, impacts, and potential mitigation strategies. A global survey was conducted in a general adult population using a questionnaire based on a targeted literature review that identified under-researched areas. The 21-item questionnaire was completed on a secure, web-based survey platform. Statistical analyses and models were utilized to identify relationships between participant characteristics and needle phobia. Of t
