Enhanced Bio-P removal: Past, present, and future - A comprehensive review.

Excess amounts of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) from anthropogenic activities such as population growth, municipal and industrial wastewater discharges, agriculture fertilization and storm water runoffs, have affected surface water chemistry, resulting in episodes of eutrophication. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) based treatment processes are an economical and environmentally friendly solution to address the present environmental impacts caused by excess P present in municipal discharges. EBPR practices have been researched and operated for more than five decades worldwide, wi

Changes in bone mineral density and bone metabolic indexes in ankylosing spondylitis mouse model complicated with osteoporosis.

Changes in bone mineral density and bone metabolic indexes in a model of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) mice complicated with osteoporosis (OP) were investigated. BLAB/c mice were used as the subjects. AS was induced using proteoglycan, and OP was induced using tail suspension method. The mice were randomly divided into four groups: AS group, OP group, AS + OP group and negative control group. Changes in bone mineral density, bone strength, serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP), in mice of each group were detected and compared.

Removal of phosphonates from industrial wastewater with UV/FeII, Fenton and UV/Fenton treatment.

Phosphonates are an important group of phosphorus-containing compounds due to their increasing industrial use and possible eutrophication potential. This study involves investigations into the methods UV/FeII, Fenton and UV/Fenton for their removal from a pure water matrix and industrial wastewaters. It could be shown that the degradability of phosphonates by UV/FeII (6 kWh/m3) in pure water crucially depended on the pH and was higher the less phosphonate groups a phosphonate contains. The UV/FeII method is recommended in particular for the treatment of concentrates with nitrogen-free phosphon

Understanding the growth of the bio-struvite production Brevibacterium antiquum in sludge liquors.

Biological struvite (bio-struvite) production through biomineralization has been suggested as an alternative to chemically derived struvite production to recover phosphorus from wastewater streams. In this study, statistical experimental design techniques were used to find the optimal growth rate (μ) of Brevibacterium antiquum in sludge liquors. Acetate, oleic acid, NaCl, NH4-N, and Ca2+ were shown to affect the growth rate of B. antiquum. The growth rate reached 3.44 1/d when the bacteria were supplemented with 3.0% w/v NaCl and 1124 mg chemical oxygen demand/L as acetate. However, NaCl was f

Degree of phosphorus saturation of an Oxisol amended with biosolids in a long-term field experiment.

When applied to agricultural soils, phosphate fertilizers and the mineral or organic compounds present in solid and/or liquid waste may raise phosphorus (P) content and increase soil P saturation. The degree of phosphorus saturation (DPS) is a good indicator of potential P loss from agricultural soils. The purpose of this study was to calculate the DPS of samples from an Oxisol amended for 5 years with biosolids and mineral fertilizer. DPS was calculated based on P, iron, and aluminum extracted by ammonium oxalate and oxalic acid (DPSox) or by Mehlich-1 solution (DPSM1). Treatments included NP

Chemical phosphorus removal model based on equilibrium chemistry.

Regulations in many regions of the world require total phosphorus (TP) levels lower than 0.10 mgP/L (100 microgP/L) in effluents, resulting in the need to achieve very low ortho-phosphate (OP) concentrations. Chemical precipitation is a widely used technology for controlling effluent OP discharge, either on its own or supplementing biological methods. The various chemical and physico-chemical mechanisms that result in extremely low residual OP levels are complex and depend on pH. In practice, engineering calculations frequently use an empirical precipitation model. This model requires pH as in

Post-fire surface water quality: comparison of fire retardant versus wildfire-related effects.

An understanding of the environmental effects of the use of wildland fire retardant is needed to provide informed decision-making regarding forest management. We compiled data from all post-fire surface water monitoring programs where the fire retardant constituents ammonia, phosphorus, and cyanide were measured, and data were available in the public domain. For streams near four major wildfires, we evaluated whether these chemicals originated primarily from fire or from retardant use. We compared measured concentrations in streams where chemical wildland fire retardant was applied with concen

[Determination of phosphine liberated in the storage of amorphous red phosphorus by headspace gas chromatography].

Formation and liberation of phosphine has been an important factor and concern in the safety of the storage of amorphous red phosphorous. A method was established for the analysis of phosphine, which was determined by gas chromatography with a flame photometric detector and a column of 3 mm i. d. x 2 m glass tube packed with GDX-102 stationary phase. An aliquot of 0.2 mL of the gas was injected by headspace sampler for the determination of the target compound with external standard quantitation. The retention time of phosphine was 1.62 min at 50 degrees C. The minimum detectable amount was 0.0

Genome-wide identification of genes associated with enhanced carbon secretion in cluster roots of Lupinus albus L.

Several plant species adapted to low-phosphorus (P) conditions develop cluster roots, specialized structures that release organic acids and acid phosphatases (APases) to increase inorganic phosphate (Pi) availability. White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is used as a model for studying cluster root function. Using a positron-emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS), we previously observed spot-like carbon (C) secretion patterns in the cluster roots of white lupin, the amounts of which differed widely among spots, suggesting variation in secretion activity among cluster roots. Here, we combined PETIS w

Sustainable hydrogen and vivianite recovery from waste activated sludge in electro-fermentation: Perspectives of product regulation and microbial interaction.

Zero-valent iron mediated electro-fermentation (EF) has recently emerged as a promising strategy for the synchronous hydrogen and vivianite recovery from waste activated sludge (WAS), while the mechanism of production regulation and microbial interaction still remains unclear. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen and phosphorus recovery from prefermented sludge via EF was performed. The substrate reduction (∼2500 mg COD/L, fermentation liquid was diluted 1:1) resulted in the highest hydrogen yield (25.5 mmol/g COD) and complete phosphate recovery at 2 d, the recovered vivianite

Natural variation in antimicrobial activity and composition of the secreted metabolomes of the model moss Ceratodon purpureus.

Bryophytes have recently emerged as potentially promising producers of bioactive metabolites with multiple applications in biomedicine and biotechnology. Our previous studies have established that the model moss Ceratodon purpureus produces novel compounds with potent antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria. Here, we conducted a comparative analysis of metabolites produced by four different natural isolates of C. purpureus and observed considerable variation in the composition of antibacterial compounds. Next, we partially purified bioactive compounds from extracellular exudate

Harnessing the nutritional profile and health benefits of millets: a solution to global food security problems.

India is dealing with both nutritional and agricultural issues. The maximum area of agricultural land with irrigation capabilities has been largely utilized, while the amount of dry land is expanding. The influence is distinct on farmer's livelihoods and earnings, which ultimately affects nutritional security. In order to attain nutritional security and the goal of SDG (Sustainable Development Goals), millets are sustainable solutions, with respect to high nutritional content, bioactive and medicinal properties, and climate resilience. The nutrient profile of millet includes 60%-70% carbohydra

Updating Reaction Mechanistic Domains for Skin Sensitization: 1. Nucleophilic Skin Sensitizers.

It has long been recognized that skin sensitizers either are electrophilic or can be activated to electrophilic species. Several nonanimal assays for skin sensitization are based on this premise. In the course of a project to update dermal sensitization thresholds (DST), we found a substantial number of sensitizers, with no electrophilic or pro-electrophilic alerts, that could be simply explained in terms of the sensitizer acting as a nucleophile. In some cases, the nucleophilic center is a sulfur or phosphorus atom, while in others, it is an aromatic carbon atom. For carbon-centered nucleophi

Nonsterile l-Lysine Fermentation Using Engineered Phosphite-Grown Corynebacterium glutamicum.

Fermentation using Corynebacterium glutamicum is an important method for the industrial production of amino acids. However, conventional fermentation processes using C. glutamicum are susceptible to microbial contamination and therefore require equipment sterilization or antibiotic dosing. To establish a more robust fermentation process, l-lysine-producing C. glutamicum was engineered to efficiently utilize xenobiotic phosphite (Pt) by optimizing the expression of Pt dehydrogenase in the exeR genome locus. This ability provided C. glutamicum with a competitive advantage over common contaminati
