Spatial selective attention and asynchrony of cognitive systems in adult dyslexic readers: an ERPs and behavioral study.

The aim of this study was to gain additional knowledge about the asynchrony phenomenon in developmental dyslexia, especially when spatial selective attention is manipulated. Adults with developmental dyslexia and non-impaired readers underwent two experimental tasks, one including alphabetic stimuli (pre-lexical consonant-vowel syllables) and the other containing non-alphabetic stimuli (pictures and sounds of animals). Participants were instructed to attend to the right or left hemifields and to respond to all stimuli on that hemifield. Behavioral parameters and event-related potentials were r

Agnosia for bird calls.

The cognitive organisation of nonverbal auditory knowledge remains poorly defined. Deficits of environmental sound as well as word and visual object knowledge are well-recognised in semantic dementia. However, it is unclear how auditory cognition breaks down in this disorder and how this relates to deficits in other knowledge modalities. We had the opportunity to study a patient with a typical syndrome of semantic dementia who had extensive premorbid knowledge of birds, allowing us to assess the impact of the disease on the processing of auditory in relation to visual and verbal attributes of

Differential roles of the dorsal prefrontal and posterior parietal cortices in visual search: a TMS study.

Although previous studies have shown that fronto-parietal attentional networks play a crucial role in bottom-up and top-down processes, the relative contribution of the frontal and parietal cortices to these processes remains elusive. Here we used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to interfere with the activity of the right dorsal prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) or the right posterior parietal cortex (PPC), immediately prior to the onset of the visual search display. Participants searched a target defined by color and orientation in "pop-out" or "search" condition. Repetitive TMS was applied t

Transient Pupil Dilation after Subsaccadic Microstimulation of Primate Frontal Eye Fields.

UNLABELLED: Pupillometry provides a simple and noninvasive index for a variety of cognitive processes, including perception, attention, task consolidation, learning, and memory. The neural substrates by which such cognitive processes influence pupil diameter remain somewhat unclear, although cortical inputs to the locus coeruleus mediating arousal are likely involved. Changes in pupil diameter also accompany covert orienting; hence the oculomotor system may provide an alternative substrate for cognitive influences on pupil diameter. Here, we show that low-level electrical microstimulation of t

Phonological processing in speech perception: What do sonority differences tell us?

Previous research has associated the inferior frontal and posterior temporal brain regions with a number of phonological processes. In order to identify how these specific brain regions contribute to phonological processing, we manipulated subsyllabic phonological complexity and stimulus modality during speech perception using fMRI. Subjects passively attended to visual or auditory pseudowords. Similar to previous studies, a bilateral network of cortical regions was recruited during the presentation of visual and auditory stimuli. Moreover, pseudowords recruited a similar network of regions as

Can a one-hour session of exposure treatment modulate startle response and reduce spider fears?

Preliminary evidence suggests that 3 hours of behavior therapy can reduce fear responses to phobic stimuli. Most of this research, however, has relied on self-reports and clinician assessments, and failed to include a comparison group. To extend this literature, with 32 adults with spider phobia, we investigated the effects of a single hour of in vivo exposure on subjective and electrophysiological aspects of fear; comparisons were made to a wait-list control group. Pre- and post-assessments included phobia-relevant questionnaires and startle reflex responses to spider, negative, neutral and p

Investigating object representations during change detection in human extrastriate cortex.

Detecting a change in a visual stimulus is particularly difficult when it is accompanied by a visual disruption such as a saccade or flicker. In order to say whether a stimulus has changed across such a disruption, some neural trace must persist. Here we investigated whether two different regions of the human extrastriate visual cortex contain neuronal populations encoding such a trace. Participants viewed a stimulus that included various objects and a short blank period (flicker) made it difficult to distinguish whether an object in the stimulus had changed or not. By applying transcranial ma

Localization of cortical dysfunction based on auditory and visual naming performance.

Naming is generally considered a left-hemisphere function without precise localization. However, recent cortical stimulation studies demonstrate a modality-related anatomical dissociation, in that anterior temporal stimulation disrupts auditory description naming ("auditory naming") but not visual object naming ("visual naming"), whereas posterior temporal stimulation disrupts naming on both tasks. We hypothesized that patients with anterior temporal abnormalities would exhibit impaired auditory naming, yet normal range visual naming, whereas patients with posterior temporal abnormalities woul

The benefits of hearing aids and closed captioning for television viewing by older adults with hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Although watching television is a common leisure activity of older adults, the ability to understand televised speech may be compromised by age-related hearing loss. Two potential assistive devices for improving television viewing are hearing aids (HAs) and closed captioning (CC), but their use and benefit by older adults with hearing loss are unknown. The primary purpose of this initial investigation was to determine if older hearing-impaired adults show improvements in understanding televised speech with the use of these two assistive devices (HAs and CC) compared with conditions

The role of sensory-motor information in object recognition: evidence from category-specific visual agnosia.

The role of sensory-motor representations in object recognition was investigated in experiments involving AD, a patient with mild visual agnosia who was impaired in the recognition of visually presented living as compared to non-living entities. AD named visually presented items for which sensory-motor information was available significantly more reliably than items for which such information was not available; this was true when all items were non-living. Naming of objects from their associated sound was normal. These data suggest that both information about object form computed in the ventra

Phosphene threshold as a function of contrast of external visual stimuli.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the occipital lobe is frequently used to induce visual percepts by direct stimulation of visual cortex. The threshold magnetic field strength necessary to elicit a visual percept is often regarded as a measure of electrical excitability of visual cortex. Using single-pulse TMS during visual motion stimulus presentation, we investigated the relationship between different degrees of visual cortical preactivation and cortical phosphene threshold (PT). The two possible, mutually exclusive, predictions on the outcome of this experiment were that a) PT incr

A neural model of smooth pursuit control and motion perception by cortical area MST.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs) are eye rotations that are used to maintain fixation on a moving target. Such rotations complicate the interpretation of the retinal image, because they nullify the retinal motion of the target, while generating retinal motion of stationary objects in the background. This poses a problem for the oculomotor system, which must track the stabilized target image while suppressing the optokinetic reflex, which would move the eye in the direction of the retinal background motion (opposite to the direction in which the target is moving). Similarly, the perceptual

["Forced mouth opening reaction" associated with corticobasal degeneration].

Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a slowly progressive disorder characterized by an asymmetrical akinetic-rigid syndrome, supranuclear ophthalmoplegia, dystonia, often accompanied by involuntary movements, particularly myoclonus, and associated with lateralized cortical signs such as alien limb behavior and apraxia. Computerized tomography demonstrates asymmetrical frontoparietal cortical atrophy in the later stages of the illness. Neuropathological examination reveals neuronal loss, gliosis and swollen achromatic neurons within the frontal and temporal cortices, and the substantia nigra. We

Accuracy, reproducibility and variability of quantitative assessments of bulbar and respiratory function in motor neurone disease.

The validity of quantitative tests to assess bulbar and respiratory function used in therapeutic trials in motor neurone disease (MND) is studied in 26 MND and 21 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Five raters timed repeated visual and auditory stimuli generated by a metronome simulating bulbar tests. For all raters, mean error rate was 5.07%, correlation coefficient was 0.89 (and %difference of 1.53), and coefficient of variation (CV) was 3.18%. The experienced rater obtained significantly better %differences and CV. For all subjects and tests, mean correlation coefficient was 0.98, and m

Spatial and temporal response properties of residual vision in a case of hemianopia.

Residual vision in subjects with damage of the primary visual cortex (striate cortex) has been demonstrated in many previous studies and is taken to reflect the properties of known subcortical and extrastriate visual pathways. In this report we describe psychophysical experiments carried out on a subject clinically blind in half of his visual field (i.e. homonymous hemianopia) caused by striate cortex damage. They reveal the existence of two distinct channels mediating such vision. One channel responds to spatial structure and the other to light flux changes. The spatially tuned channel has a

The effects of scopolamine and methylscopolamine on visual and auditory discriminations in male and female Wistar rats.

The present experiment was designed to investigate whether or not the administration of scopolamine hydrobromide would differentially disrupt auditory or visual discrimination performance in male and female Wistar rats. Two groups of male and female Wistar rats were trained to discriminate between a continuous and intermittent visual stimulus, while two other groups were trained to discriminate between a continuous or intermittent auditory stimulus in a discrete-trial discrimination procedure. Once discrimination performance had stabilized, subjects were treated with different doses (0.125, 0.

Pupil responsiveness in cluster headache: a dynamic TV pupillometric evaluation.

In this study the variations in pupil diameter induced by different stimuli (dark-light adaptation, light reflex, electric stimulation of the sural nerve) were investigated in episodic (in the active or remission phases) and in chronic cluster headache (CH) patients. Pupil size monitoring was performed with a monocular, infrared TV pupillometer, and sural nerve stimuli were applied after the pain threshold had been measured as the flexion reflex threshold of the biceps femoris muscle (RIII reflex). The results were compared with those obtained in patients with "peripheral" (third neuron) Horne

Uric acid is released in the zona incerta of the subthalamic region of the sheep during rumination and in response to feeding and drinking stimuli.

The technique of intracranial dialysis was used to sample changes in monoamine metabolite and uric acid concentrations in the zona incerta (ZI) of the subthalamic region of conscious sheep during rumination and in response to the presentation of feeding and drinking stimuli. Sequential 10-min dialysis samples were taken over a 5-h period with stimuli presented at hourly intervals. For each animal, sampling was carried out weekly for 2-3 months. Results from HPLC analysis showed that concentrations of uric acid rose significantly in the ZI, but not in the cortex or peripheral plasma, during rum

Light-stimulus-evoked blink reflex: methods, normal values, relation to other blink reflexes, and observations in multiple sclerosis.

The blink reflex may be evoked by auditory click or light stimulation, the latter being constantly present in all healthy subjects. The latency and amplitude of the light-stimulus-evoked blink response (L-BR) is influenced by the light intensity, distance between the light stimulus and the eye, attention, and background facilitation. The L-BR was abnormal in 75% of definite and 61% of probable multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. When abnormal, the L-BR was more commonly absent than delayed. Optic nerve lesions could be identified by the pattern of abnormalities in the L-BR in some patients. The
