Intracranial Epidermoid Cyst Mimics Musculoskeletal Shoulder Disease: Findings from a Case Report in Physiotherapy Clinical Practice.

Shoulder pain is often attributable to a musculoskeletal disorder, but in some instances, it may be linked to pathologies outside the physiotherapist's area of expertise. Specifically, some intracranial problems can cause pain and disability to the shoulder complex. This case report aims to describe the clinical presentation, history taking, physical examination, and clinical decision-making procedures in a patient with an intracranial epidermoid cyst mimicking a musculoskeletal disorder of the shoulder girdle. A 42-year-old man complained of pain and disability in his left shoulder. Sudden, s…

Identification and Evaluation of Physical Abuse in Children.

Child physical abuse affects hundreds of thousands of children annually and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Pediatric health care providers play a key role in the recognition and treatment of suspected child abuse. Abusive injuries are often missed, which may lead to dire consequences for the child. Standardized screening tools and treatment guidelines can enhance early recognition of child abuse. This article reviews key findings in a medical history and physical examination that should raise suspicion for abuse. We also review the recommended evaluation that sho…

Application of mechanical diagnosis and therapy to a patient diagnosed with de Quervain's disease: a case study.

STUDY DESIGN: Single case report. INTRODUCTION: Mechanical diagnosis and therapy (MDT) is widely used in the management of both spinal disorders and extremity problems. However, there is no study that has introduced the application of this concept to hand therapy. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To demonstrate the application of MDT to a patient with a thumb problem, which was diagnosed as de Quervain's disease. METHODS: According to MDT principles, the thumb pain was assessed and treated. RESULTS: Radio carpal joint distraction with thumb metaphalangeal flexion combined with wrist ulnar deviation w

Diagnosing and treating benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Gerontological nurses play a critical role in the early recognition of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition that accounts for approximately 50% of vertigo in older adults. BPPV results in vertigo when debris collects in one or more of the semicircular canals, most typically the posterior canal. It may be differentiated from other forms of vertigo because it results in dizziness when recumbent or with head position changes. BPPV may be successfully treated with repositioning therapy, such as the Epley maneuver. Nurses working in medical offices, longterm care facilities, and

Examination of the upper and lower respiratory tract relevant to purchase.

The intent and extent of the respiratory tract examination relevant to purchase are dictated by numerous factors, including historical information, signs suggestive of respiratory tract abnormalities, intended use of the horse, and economic considerations. Following a thorough and systematic examination of the horse at rest, evaluation during and following exercise may be warranted. The physical examination should include evaluation of regional symmetry of the head, neck, and thorax; evaluation of nasal airflow and patency; palpation of the nasal septum, larynx, and trachea; examination for su…

[Clitoral massage as a supporting measure in manipulation of the bovine uterus].

A method of exciting the clitoris is described. After such a massage or stimulation of the clitoris, the cervix lumen enlarges and allows an easier passage. Thus one can assume that a reflex arc exists. Directions on how to arouse the "clitoris-cervix-reflex" can be requested by sending an international self addressed stamped envelope to the author.

Congenital muscular torticollis: Diagnosis, management, and prognosis in the pediatric population.

Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) typically is due to unilateral shortening of fibrosis of sternocleidomastoid muscle. Timely diagnosis and management are essential for improving outcomes in children. Within CMT, there are several classifications with variable prognosis: postural, muscular, and sternomastoid tumor group. The diagnosis of CMT involves comprehensive physical assessment. Treatment of CMT typically involves conservative treatment that includes physical therapy, but can involve pharmacologic treatment with botulinum toxin injections, and at worst case, surgical treatment. Identifying Predictors of Physical Abuse Evaluation of Injured Infants: Opportunities to Improve Recognition.

OBJECTIVES: To identify predictors of physical abuse evaluation in infants younger than 6 months with visible injury and to determine the prevalence of occult fracture and intracranial hemorrhage in those evaluated. METHODS: Infants 6.0 months or younger who presented with visible injury to a pediatric hospital-affiliated emergency department or urgent care between July 2013 and January 2017 were included. Potential predictors included sociodemographics, treatment site, provider, injury characteristics, and history. Outcome variables included completion of a radiographic skeletal survey and i

"Tenomalacia": a new sonographic sign of tendinopathy?

The purpose of this study was to assess tendon compressibility with sonography in extensor tendinopathy and in asymptomatic extensor tendons of the elbow. Sonography of both elbows was performed in eight patients with a clinical diagnosis of unilateral lateral epicondylitis. Tendons were assessed for compressibility by measuring their thickness before and after compression with the transducer. The same manoeuvre was performed while tendon vascularity was assessed with colour Doppler. All eight cases showed increased compressibility of the common extensor tendon on the painful side compared to

[Health aspects of diving in ENT medicine. Part II: Diving fitness].

Diving has become increasingly popular. With the growing number of patients who want to dive, there is an increasing number of divers who require their regular medical examination. As ENT problems are the most common disorders in divers, otorhinolaryngologists regularly have to assess the diver's fitness. It should be noted that an ENT examination does not certify complete fitness to dive! Diving can be resumed 3 months after middle ear surgery, especially after tympanoplastic type I, II and III with insertion of a PORP, when there is regular middle ear ventilation without atrophic scars of th

[Cervical disk hernia in dogs: a review].

Cervical disc disease is caused by slow or rapid herniation of the intervertebral disc, usually between C2 and C5. The outstanding symptom is pain. Neurological defects are present in approximately 40 per cent of the dogs. Treatment consists of chemotherapy and/or surgery (fenestration or decompression). Fenestration results is gradual resolution of the symptoms, whereas decompression results in rapid resolution. Fenestration has the advantage of preventing future recurrences. The present paper presents a review of the literature, and particular aspects are emphasised on the basis of personal

Approaching the Pediatric Anogenital Exam.

Anogenital complaints are prevalent among pediatric patients in both primary care and specialty care settings (ie, dermatology, urology, gynecology). Sensitive area examination is a critical diagnostic tool in pediatric patient care. Unfortunately, even experienced practitioners may lack formal training and confidence in performing anogenital exams. In this article, we provide a simple yet systematic approach to the pediatric anogenital exam, which outlines key components before, during and after the exam. We hope to empower physicians to confidently execute a pediatric anogenital exam while m

A practical model for integrated temporomandibular disorder assessment in the routine oral examination.

The COVID-19 era has seen an increase in orofacial pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The increased relevance and awareness of these conditions, including the enactment of accreditation standards dictating the inclusion of TMD education in dental school curricula, highlights the need for a simplified TMD screening and evaluation model. A literature review was conducted to establish whether a widely accepted, comprehensive, and clinically practical approach to screening and evaluation for TMDs during routine oral examination was available. Previous studies and available medical
