BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of exposure to severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandated for HCWs. However, the physiological effects on the HCWs while working in the protective gear remains unexplored. This study aimed to assess the physiological effects of the prolonged use of PPE on HCWs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five HCWs, aged 18-50 years were enrolled in this prospective, observational, cohort study. The physiological variables [heart rate, oxygen saturation, and perfusion index (PI)] w

Heat stress is a major challenge in tropical and subtropical dairy systems; however, limited evidence exists on how dietary lipid supplementation influences cow behavior, physiology, and milk quality under semi-confined summer conditions. This study evaluated the effects of different lipid sources (protected fat, flaxseed, and a mixture) on milk yield, composition, fatty acid profile, and behavioral and physiological responses of Holstein cows. Twelve cows were allocated to three 4 × 4 Latin squares, with each period lasting 15 days (10 days adaptation, 5 days data collection). Treatments cons

The purpose of this study was to distinguish physiological uptakes from pathological uptakes of the palatine tonsil (PT) in patients with lymphoma using positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) parameters, including standardized uptake value (SUV), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), and carotid-tonsil SUVmax difference and ratio. We also aimed to investigate cutoff values for tonsillar lymphoma (TL), which was confirmed histopathologically. Medical charts of 45 patients undergoing diagnostic palatine tonsillectomy between 2022 and 2025 were prospect

Vaporized N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) has a short duration and simple application, prompting this technique as a new approach for psychedelics' clinical use. Building on our initial dose-ascending studies and addressing potential confounding effects of dosing order, this study is the first to evaluate inhaled DMT in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind design. Given DMT's therapeutic potential, we aimed to assess its safety, tolerability, and subjective effects compared to an active placebo. Twenty-five healthy participants completed two treatment sessions, receiving DMT (60 mg) or

The acute stress response can be considered the primary evolutionary adaptation to maximise fitness in the face of unpredictable environmental challenges. However, the difficulties of assessing physiology in natural environments mean that comparatively little is known about how response variation influences fitness in free-living animals. Currently, determining acute stress physiology typically involves blood sampling or cardiac monitoring. Both require trapping and handling, interrupting natural behaviour, and potentially biasing our understanding toward trappable species/individuals. Importa

Hyper- or hypoventilation are commonly occurring stress responses to arterial puncture around the time of blood sampling and have been shown to rapidly alter arterial blood acid-base parameters. This study aimed to evaluate a physiology-based mathematical method to transform peripheral venous blood acid-base values into mathematically arterialised equivalents following acute, transient changes in ventilation. Data from thirty patients scheduled for elective surgery were analysed using the physiology-based method. These data described ventilator changes simulating 'hyper-' or 'hypoventilation'

OBJECTIVE: The physiology of menopausal hot flashes is not well understood. The autonomic nervous system may play a role in hot flashes, but the current understanding is limited. We previously demonstrated in the laboratory that decreases in high-frequency heart rate variability, an index of cardiac vagal control, occur during hot flashes relative to preceding and following periods. In the present study, we tested whether we would observe a similar phenomenon in the ambulatory setting. We additionally considered respiratory rate in these associations.
METHODS: Twenty-one perimenopausal and po

Equine-assisted learning (EAL) is gaining in popularity due to its demonstrated benefits to participants, including increased social-emotional competencies and self-efficacy, and decreased symptoms of depression. Accordingly, EAL is increasingly utilized as a method to build soft skills for people who have a history of trauma and/or who may struggle with emotional regulation. Within the context of equine-assisted services (EAS) broadly, there is some evidence that participants who have trauma and/or emotional dysregulation may cause increased stress to horses when compared to interactions with

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of hair loss in men. Its prevalence increases with advancing age. Characteristics of hair loss in male AGA reveal the possibility of different biophysical and physiological profiles between androgen-sensitive (vertex) and androgen-insensitive (occipital) scalps. However, these variations have not been well investigated.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate and compare scalp biophysical and physiological characteristics in male AGA patients and healthy controls.
METHODS: Scalp biophysiological profiles were evaluated by non-invasive m

RATIONALE: Nicotine replacement is commonly used to treat tobacco use in heavy-drinking smokers. However, few studies have examined the effect of nicotine replacement on subjective and physiological responses to alcohol and alcohol drinking behavior.
OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this within-subject, double-blind study was to examine whether transdermal nicotine replacement (0 mg vs 21 mg/day) altered response to a low-dose priming drink and subsequent ad libitum drinking behavior.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects (n=19) were non-treatment-seeking, non-dependent heavy drinkers who were daily

Recent initiatives to reduce animal use in preclinical research have accelerated the development of organs-on-chip (OoC) for modeling human physiology. While OoCs have advanced structural and cellular complexity beyond 2D culture, strategies to reproduce the extracellular matrix (ECM) remain limited. This review synthesizes emerging strategies to recapitulate native ECM within OoCs, emphasizing both solid and fluid phases of the microenvironment. We define key mechanical parameters governing cell-matrix interactions and outline how these properties are engineered in biomimetic hydrogels. Natur

Perinatal asphyxia is a critical condition frequently associated with hemodynamic instability, often necessitating vasoactive support. Despite the established benefits of therapeutic hypothermia, significant mortality and long-term morbidity persist, particularly in severe cases. The objective of this narrative review is to critically evaluate the available evidence on vasoactive therapies in asphyxiated neonates, compare the hemodynamic effects of commonly used agents, and propose a physiology-based, phenotype-driven approach to cardiovascular management during therapeutic hypothermia. Tendons play fundamental roles in the execution of human movement and therefore understanding tendon function, health and disease is important for everyday living and sports performance. The acute mechanical behavioural and physiological responses to short-term loading of tendons, as well as more chronic morphological and mechanical adaptations to longer term loading, differ between sexes. This has led some researchers to speculate that there may be a sex-specific injury risk in tendons. However, the link between anatomical, physiological and biomechanical sex-specific differences in tendons a
