The mean birth weight of the 1,568 probands with clefts who were born in Finland between 1975 and 1985 was 3,346 g, which is lower than the mean of all live born babies in 1980 (3,541 g). Two cases of large placental chorioangiomas are reported. These tumors gave rise to obstetric and neonatal complications with perinatal death in both cases. These rare tumors were discovered by pathological examination of the products of delivery, with their precise nature being identified histologically. Review of the literature shows that fetal, neonatal and obstetric consequences are multiple and can often be explained by placental and cardiac insufficiency in utero secondary to the presence of these vascular tumors.

The fetoplacental system of 132 women with diabetes mellitus and 85 healthy women was studied during the third pregnancy trimester. Blood estradiol and urinary estriol levels were found-reduced in the diabetics, particularly in those with insulin-dependent diabetes. Blood progesterone and oxytocinase levels were found unchanged. These parameters lowered in diabetic glomerulosclerosis. If pregnant diabetics develop hydramnion, their blood estradiol, progesterone, prolactin, and oxytocinase levels increased.

While isolated reports on the management and natural biology of placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) continue to accumulate, little attention has been given to ovarian conservation in the surgical management of this disease. Transvaginal sonographic localization of the placenta was performed in 100 patients suspected of having placenta previa. Except in one patient, the diagnosis was confirmed at cesarean delivery in all cases of placenta previa found by sonography before delivery, resulting in a 93.3% predictive value of a positive test. An unbooked patient presented with severe eclampsia and sudden onset of abdominal pain, uterine tenderness and fresh vaginal bleeding. Four spontaneous abortions and two stillbirth occurred during a prospective survey following the teratogenicity of echoviruses in 80 pregnant women selected at random from the Antenatal Care Service. Echovirus types 19, 27, and 33. Coxsackie B2 and B6 were isolated from placental and foetal tissues (brain, liver, kidney, heart, and spleen). The mothers also excreted the virus by faeces at least twenty days before abortion and responded serologically, indicating active virus infection. Almost all aborted children were anomalous with signs of viral infection.

The aim of the study was to compare the placental transfer of tetanus toxoid antibodies (TTAB) and total IgG in Africa, where we had previously demonstrated a lack of transmission from mother to the newborn of measles antibodies. This study describes the relationships between histologically evident inflammation of the placenta, membranes, and umbilical cords, and correlates these lesions with clinical outcome and with amniotic fluid and amniotic membrane cultures in pregnancies at risk for clinical infection.
